The Ducks had Lindholm, Theodore, Pettersson and Montour at one point

I've been thinking about those players a lot lately, I have this fear history is going to repeat itself with our current young d group.

All they had to do was buyout Bieksa (who was just about washed) but Murray completely bungled the situation.
That would still leave that quartet of Fowler, Lindholm, Vat, Manson to protect. Did they only have 4F to protect? Getzlaf, Kesler, Perry, Eaves, Rackell, Silf, etc. up front. So, would lose someone good.

And an odd tidbit out of that was when they sacked Wilford as a defensive assistant in 2021, it was because of how poorly they viewed what he was doing with their young defense and now he's spent four years getting nothing new out of the Sabres young defensemen. Weeeeee....

Yeah sorry the consensus at the time was that we should also do something similar to the Vats trade that ended up happening anyway. So then protect the other three D, all those forwards plus new one from Vats trade. Seemed more obvious than dumping Theo but I don't think BM valued him properly due to lack of grit

Well, also, given their ages in 2017, the 2003 draft class was 32. So, they were down to their final 2-3 productive years. If the Ducks were going to contend they needed to do that in 2018-2020. Guess the figured, having the vets would be better than the kids on the backend, though like you said, Vats was dealt so they ended up down 3 Dmen in Stoner, Theo and Vats. Bieksa, Fowler, Manson, Lindholm, Montour and Pettersson til they dealt him too.

Now they have Mintyukov, Solberg, LaCombe, Luneau, and Zellweger.

Check back in other 5 to 10 years to see who is who from that group.

Shoot add helleson to that group he’s been solid for us… and still few others with some potential

Between their Stanley Cup win 07 and after the retirement of Niedermeyer their D corps was weak and killed their chance for another cup (during the prime of Getzlaf and Perry) until around 2015, when these youngsters begun to florish.
Read also that Niedermeyer was involved in the development of these talents.

Btw loosing Theodore for nothing was a massive step back for Ducks.
Losing Theodore for nothing was one of the low points of the franchise tbh

5 less wins then you guys while being much younger and much more promising young talent. Wouldn’t get too excited there big fella you guys will be stuck in your mediocrity for a long time IF you are lucky enough to even be mediocre.
Congratulations on LA being mediocre.

This will be Anaheim's 7th straight season without the playoffs and no end in sight.

Everyone always talks about the Preds as being an elite defenseman drafting team but Anaheim low-key just as good.
I think since 2008 no other team comes close to drafting and developing defensemen.

From 2008-2020 they drafted these players:
Fowler
Lindholm
Schultz
Gardiner
Manson
Montour
Theodore
Pettersson
Vatanen
LaCombe
Drysdale

11 top 4 defensemen in 13 years. And that's not counting other NHL defensemen like Mahura, Megna, Larsson, and Thrun (likely will be a top 4 guy).

And since 2020 they have Zellweger, Mintyukov, and Luneau.
