This is an absurd take. In the 40+ years I have been watching the sport I have never seen a non goalie singlehandedly carry a team the way Hall did that season. There were multiple games that season where he was literally a one man team: Devils would be getting caved in, Hall comes on the ice and instantly the Devils are the ones caving in the opponent.

He's always been more of a playmaker and now he's 33 and playing for the 3rd worst offense in the NHL. It's a rough spot for a player like him to be in. If he wanted to go on a cup chasing tour, I bet he could still add plenty of value (on a cheap contract).

I'm a big fan of his play and am hoping it's just a veteran with a minor setback from surgery taking a maintenance type day. When I've seen him play he's looked good this season to be honest. Strikes me as the kind of guy that could be picked up at the deadline and goes on a nice run.

When he was in Windsor, and his first few years in Edmonton, there were definitely plenty of stories circulating online about people running into him at bars/clubs and him being kinda douchey. Nothing particularly bad, just him being a young, arrogant athlete, and it was all just random anonymous comments that may or may not have been true.

Also haven’t heard much of that since he hit his mid 20s, it was mostly something you heard quite early in his career. If it was true, he’s probably matured since.

It was painfully obvious his game would not age well. For an elite player, his IQ and hockey smarts were always lacking relative to his peers in the same tier. His game relied on his pure speed, skill, and determination.

As a Devils fan I will always remember his 2018 season fondly and how fun it was to watch him every game. However, even at the time, I was super wary of extending him to a monster contract. I’m happy it worked out the way it did.

He doesn't seem to have any less hockey sense and be over reliant on skill and speed compared to MacGinnon. Or even Stamkos.

Stamkos had a horrible injury and adapted.

MacGinnon has avoided injury.

Otherwise if Hall had been put in a more favorable organization I think his legacy looks a lot better.

I never understood why chose Arizona and then Buffalo... if he got traded from the Devils to a legit top tier contender (like going directly from NJ to Boston) at the time and then signed a long term extension with them, maybe the stability and being g surrounded by talent would have allowed him to age a little more gracefully.

The other candidates that year were MacKinnon and Kopitar. All three players made it to the playoffs. All three eliminated after one round. Hall narrowly beats them both for % of total team goals for. By what metric did MacKinnon or Kopitar distinguish themselves that season that should have meant the award go to them?

I just want to note that IF Larssons dad hadn’t had a heart attack and he resigned in Edmonton. Oilers won the “it was 1 for 1” trade long term.
