Most of his game-breaking attributes were based on his speed. I'd imagine father time got him, and he never figured out how to cycle effectively.

Giving him the Hart was dumb at the time. Looks dumber now.
Well he was completely mailing it in when he was in Buffalo too, so that's one good or healthy season in the last five.

His speed is still there. Has he been good this year, no he hasn’t but he’s still returning from a acl injury so a game off isn’t the worst for him.
The hawks offensively have been brutal this season, so it’s not just him.

He just got put into bad situations, I think the talent is still there. Obviously not MVP level but top 6 worthy for sure.
He's never had stability in his career, he was thrown onto line 1 as an 18 year old on a bad team, moved teams multiple times. He's never had that chance to truly settle in.
In the right situation I think he can still be an effective 60-65 point guy.

Mostly injuries imo. He just has broken down due to them and given his game was based largely on his athleticism he hasn't aged well.
But he didn't just have one great year, he also finished top 10 in scoring in 2014 and 4th in ppg in 2013.

But he's never been a particularly intelligent or crafty player. He had good wheels and played a hard, straight-line type of game.
As he's gotten older and lost speed and athletic ability, he's become less effective.
He seems similar to Rick Nash, though I think Rick may have been a bit smarter as a player. Hall has the higher peak, but Nash was more consistent. They have to be quite close career-wise.

He had like 40 points more than his closest teammate. It wasn't that much of a reach. Doesn't matter what's happening now.

A career of injuries and playing on a bottom feeder aren't the recipe for success for a player at his age. He was a good two-way player in Boston, went to Chicago, got hurt, recovered, and here we are.

Missed significant time in pretty much al his seasons.

The guy is 33 and just missed almost all of last season due to an ACL injury. Not exactly shocking that he has declined significantly.
It was painfully obvious his game would not age well. For an elite player, his IQ and hockey smarts were always lacking relative to his peers in the same tier. His game relied on his pure speed, skill, and determination.
As a Devils fan I will always remember his 2018 season fondly and how fun it was to watch him every game. However, even at the time, I was super wary of extending him to a monster contract. I’m happy it worked out the way it did.

He was quite good for EDM in the pre-McDavid days. He was top ten in NHL scoring twice, which isn't too shabby for someone playing in such a bad situation.
He was outstanding that one season in NJ. He carried the team offensively. It sucks how much he's fallen off since then.

People do forget that Hall had some very good scoring years. I agree that his game was more based on athleticism than most players' games, so age and injuries were always going to hit him hard. Seems likely that heading to Edmonton was not very good for his development as a player. Since then he has also made some... interesting choices with regard to where he has played.

the boat licensing process destroyed his confidence. it was all downhill from there.
its entirely injuries.. after his knee injury with the Devils he was never as fast as he once was. He always knew where he needed to be which is a great skill but if you can't get there in time it does nothing.
If his knee didn't get injured the vast majority of the people here knocking him would be singing his praises.

The season he won Hart he had 93 points in 76 games, tied 6th in the league. Hischier was 2nd in team scoring with 52 points in 82 games. That's just insane.
