I really think this is a mistake. I guess we don't have much choice if we're dealing with injury, but Merrill is not yet NHL ready.

I don't see what the problem is, this isn't going to be a permanent move unless Merrill plays too good to get sent down. That is if he even plays at all during this call-up. Half a week in the NHL isn't going to hurt his development.

I've only watched 1 Albany game this year and Merrill looked brilliant. Are the concerns about his readiness simply conditioning and the "trials" of a longer NHL season?

Not all prospects need a year or two in Albany. I haven't seen anything in Merrill's game that is any worse than Mark Fayne's game.

In large part it's conditioning, but I'm actually more worried about comfort and confidence. I don't want Merrill in a position where he has to be worrying over every mistake he might make. If he starts overthinking his game, starts worrying too much about defense and not bringing his offensive element, then we've done his development a disservice.

Worried about a young player being confident on Pete DeBoer's team? I cannot possibly imagine there being any problems :sarcasm:

Ahh. I almost forgot this was a PDB coached squad.

Enough said.

I don't see how him getting a taste of the nhl for a few games is a mistake. If he's up permanently, yeah that would be a mistake. But if it's just 10 games at the most, whats the harm in that?

Is he okay?

Not sure. He apparently had some testing done for a concussion. That's all we know so far. Our team is very secretive about injuries too, so who knows when we'll find out exactly what happened.

That's a ****ing tough thing to happen to a kid playing his first NHL game. He's excited, friends and family are showing up or tuning in just to see him play. That shouldn't happen to anyone no matter what team.

so what exactly happened? highlights dont show merrill getting hurt

he was going back for (I think) an icing race and Mitchell basically tripped/pushed him into the boards and it looked like mitchell's leg pushed Merrill's face into the boards and the visor cut his face

Facial "lacerations", probably a concussion as well. Lost an edge going in a race for the puck in the corner, slid hard into the boards with Mitchell falling behind him which probably made it worse.

He'd blown a tire on his earlier shift too, IIRC. Don't know if his legs were jelly from nerves and playing games on 3 consecutive nights (if memory serves), but that's a gruesome injury to have taken in a debut.

Mitchell put his stick in the direction of Merrill and it touched his skates when trying to brake heading into the corner when he was about 2 feet away from the boards. I think the cut is from his visor hitting the boards.

It was very hard to watch. He kept looking around and it just looked like he had absolutely no idea where he was and who he was with. To me it looked like he was really scared. Just hope he's okay and not out for a while. I was really excited to have him in the lineup.

Josefson knew he was out of it and helped him off the ice. He seriously acted as if he had no idea where he was or what was going on. I was scared for him tbh and I hope he doesn't remember it afterwards - that's the type of bad spill that makes you think the next time you go into the corner and that's not good for a young D man.

I admire that Mitchell showed immediate concern for Merrill. I can't find a replay, but I think Merrill just lost an edge and if Mitchell did anything it was unintentional. Very scary play, the way he got up from the ice in a daze wasn't a good sign. Really hope for the best for him, he was having such a great year in Albany after two years decimated by injuries and suspensions, it really hurts to see this happen to him.

Well you would show concern, too, if you see a guy start dripping blood onto the ice after a bad fall.

What an awful way to debut.

EDIT : theking72, that's not funny.

That makes light of what happened to him even though that's probably not your intention.

Some people choose to deal with harsh situations with levity. I'm one of those guys too, so I get it.

It was a bad spill. Hopefully he's all buttoned up and feeling better.

Just trying to keep some humor around here, gets tough coming back to the boards every day when the knives are always out. Obviously very disturbed by the Merrill crash, as are we all.

Levity is one thing but that gif is more of "hahah look at the fat woman fall" thing which is why I think it was inappropriate even though I know what theking was trying to do there.

Merril had the worst luck last night. I pray this doesn't affect him MENTALLY going forward.
