The Devils are horror bad.

When thinking about the Devils, I circle back to this part of it a little bit. The issues the Devils are having with D and G were a choice. They took the high powered offense they had all last year before the deadline, which was really good, and chose to double down on the offense by resigning Meier and trading for Toffoli.

It’s not that those guys aren’t good players worth the price they paid. I just think about what the Devils would look like if they’d used the $13m they paid for those two guys on a defensive D and a goalie. Say, signing Orlov and trading for Hellebuyck.

The issues with the defense group will probably right themselves over time as L Hughes grows and Nemec develops. But right here and right now, as I said, the issues they’re having (aside from injuries, which are a factor) were a choice made by the GM.
Devils aren't a better team with Orlov and Hellebuyck if you remove Meier, Toffoli, Mercer + Vanacek + whatever else would have been needed to land Hellebuyck.

Was the Sharks thread started by a non-English speaker because the correct term is "horribad"

I get what you're trying to say, but saying you should just use the 13m to add a great goalie and dman is a lot easier said than done. Also hasn't Orlov been awful for the Canes so far? And Hellebuyck new contract looks absolutely terrifying and he's just barely a .900 goalie this season. The way Devils have been defending you'd need a Vezina contending goalie to make a real difference.

The specific players don’t even really matter to my point. I was just using an example of an alternate route they could have taken. There are multiple ways they could have gone about using that money to strengthen weaknesses instead of doubling down on strengths.

While you’re right that the goaltending has been an issue since Cory Schneider went down and needs to be addressed it doesn’t make sense to sign a long term defender when we have top tier prospects that we’re developing for those positions.

We still have a very deep pool of picks and prospects we can use to try to get a good goalie. Hell our 1st this year should be very valuable at this point (unless we make the ECF this year and then San Jose gets the pick).

Oh you reverse jinx threads.
Do you believe in magic also?

O/T: my family is moving from NYC and we’re looking to offload the bridge we own. It connects the island of Manhattan and Brooklyn. We’ve been very generous to those communities and have kept it toll free but if you purchase it you’d be able to recoup your purchase price within one year guaranteed by charging motorists.
Pleases contact me for details. Cash or Bitcoin only. Transition must take place at midnight on the bridge (come alone).

Not sure if it's personnel, philosophy or other issues - looks a lot like 2021-22 Devils. All kind of free wheeling but little cohesion or conviction.

One-man hockey with perimeter shots. No screens, deflections, hard battles or any of the unselfish things that win games.

I never really understood why people expected them to take another step forward, rather than a step back this year. They lost two significant pieces of their blueline, including half of their de facto "matchup pair". And they already had goaltending that was a bit iffy to begin with, backstopping that degraded defence.

There are plenty of good reasons for what they did. That Severson contract in particular, i don't think would've made any sense for them. Not with Hughes and Nemec also coming along and Dougie already in the fold. The Graves thing though...when you find terrific chemistry like that pairing with Marino, in a way that completely stabilizes your D Corps, i think that's worth investing a reasonable sum in. They opted not to, and as a result...they lost a lot of important minutes. Minutes that young guys aren't necessarily proving ready to step seamlessly into without missing a beat.

They've also had some injury problems, and a they seemed to willfully ignore that Meier was struggling to fit in with their team/core...and signed him to a massive deal anyway. I think that's going to continue to bite them, in that they prioritized a potentially bad fit winger over other things.

But at the end of the day...it's still a very good young core. Progress isn't always linear. Sometimes teams have to take a step back before they can actually take that next step forward. Deal with a little bit of adversity and find ways to overcome it. Can make for a better, more resilient team in the long run.

Their goaltending truly sucks. Also, missing two top six guys hurts, but yea, the goaltending is killing them.

The blue line has nothing to do with it. It’s all goaltending

This is almost always a completely lazy cop out. It's so superficial to just blame the goalie for everything. SV% and keeping pucks out of the net is always a team affair. Shaky goaltending will exacerbate that...but it's not like the Devils are suddenly running completely different goaltenders. It's the same guys. Fluctuation can happen year to year, but the much bigger change that explains the big swing is...their blueline has undergone substantial changes since last year, and missing key forwards can hurt defensively as well.

What i've seen of the Devils this year...they look far less robust defensively. Not surprising at all. But that's going to end up with more pucks in the net. Especially if your goaltending was never that great to begin with, and not really built to cover up for looser defensive play in front of them.

I’ve literally watched every game. You lot think breakdowns means that goalies should jut let in every beach ball that comes their way. You’re just so used to shit goaltending you’re unable to see the issue with the team. The d metrics are fine, the goalies aren’t.
Their literally hasn't been 1 good defenseman all season so far besides Marino on the backend. Dougie Hamilton is one of the worst defenders to ever lace up a for the Devils. He's saving grace is his puck moving ability and offense. Siegenthaler has been bad , Brendan Smith shouldn't even be playing most nights , Kevin Bahl has regressed and Luke Hughes is a bit of a mess at times. He gets a slight pass since he is only 20. We literally don't have any guys that are actually good ar defending aside from Marino , Siegenthaler and Bahl at times. It's a recipe for disaster to go along with how the Devils have been playing 5 on 5.

Lottery wins mask a lot of bad roster construction. Seems like they’re getting a bit exposed.
The roster still looks good on paper. It's not playing tonitd ability. There is still depth and plenty of firepower on offense. The defense took a hit but also gained better offensive ability bringing in Luke Hughes over Severson. The only real question was in goal. The Devils gambled on a Vitek/Schmid combo. Schmid was decent today and atleast showed last year he can some really strong games. We don't beat the Rangers without him. He only has like 30 NHL starts so he has time to develop. Vanaceck is the real issue only showing up once every 3 or 4 starts. He's going to be gone after next seasonand maybe even this offseason if he keeps this up.

They're getting hit by the PDO bug pretty bad. They didn't just became bad after one summer for no reason.

You're not watching if you believe the D has been fine. That's laughable.

I have not seen any of their games but is there a chance they are not playing defensively responsible hockey?

I ask that based on the highlights I've seen.
