The current playoffs format is BROKEN

If staying healthy is more important, the NHL should consider do away with 82 game schedule and reduce to a reasonable 70-72 games schedule and eliminate back-to-back games to give players some rest and recover but length of season should reduce slightly by a week or two so it can end by Memorial Day weekend.

Less games = less team revenue = lower player salaries.

I doubt the NHL or Player’s Union would be in favor of changing the 82 regular season schedule by more than +/- 2 games.

I mean, they already made some profit and most likely that the TV contract is set based on current season format. If they were to change the season length, they would have to renegotiate the contract with broadcasting company. What I would suggest is to have CBA and TV contract expiring at the same time for them to rework the format. If there is a fewer games available, fans would be able to afford buying extra ticket for their family/friend to attend a live game. Plus with the World Cup/Olympic in the horizon, they would be able to make money from it and won't lose their bottom line. It would allows for some room in the calendar for extra revenue outside the regular season/playoffs with World Cup. Even they could organize a tournament of their own every year but they choose to hold an international tournament every 4 years with World Cup which is a NHL thing. Olympics don't count because it's not under NHL umbrella.

People need to stop asking for 1v16. It will never happen because of travel time + too many round 1 matchups would be inconvenient for people to watch.

If you have a LA Florida series it would be hard for fans to watch away games.

1v8 in each conference could definitely be brought back though.
The divisional seeding is the same principle. It keeps the early rounds lined up by time zones better than 1-8 does, and reduces travel better too. I'm curious if the advantage is mostly just for the western conference. Although, the way the Metro teams are clumped together might be something the league likes.

For the record, I'm in favor of going back to 1-8. Building rivalries isn't worth the same matchups all the time. 4 years straight of LA is getting ridiculous. Kings fans feel this x10 I'm sure

TV contract would be less money coming in as well, it would just be pro rated to number of games.
The CDN TV regional and National deals line up with the CBA.

I don’t understand your point, if less games in schedule, fans could afford to go to more games. I don’t think it would make any difference.

Also if 13% less games, cap would also be lower.

Given the NBA's decision to try an in-sesdon tournament I have to wonder if league owners and execs figure the season is too long themselves and many games are mere afterthought for fans both attending and watching on TV?

I would think the NHL would attempt to repackage the current schedule and as mentioned have a 4 Nations every season, a Canada Cup (amongst the clubs or even at a provincial level) or a qualifying round (as in the entire league participating), or what ever they can think of.

Something different enough yet meaningful enough to at least maintain the current level of interest but ideally raise it even more so the games generate even more revenue.

I would think there are enough meaningless Monday and Tuesday night games on the schedule that generate far less revenue than Wednesdsy to Sunday games to be creative with.
