Ok, soooo I'm sitting here thinking...

Who has been the core people, over these last 2 semi-successful years?

Is it about moving Nash & New MGT JD/JK?
Is it the players in the locker room/change of culture?
Is it even a success if they don't make the playoffs this year?

But really, who are the core players on this team that shouldn't be traded?

Brandon Dubinsky (American) Ryan Johansen (Canadian) Artem Anismov (Russian)
Jack Johnson (American) Ryan Murray (Canadian) Fedor Tyutin (Russian)

BOB! He's Kryptonian right?
(Long way for a joke)

But where does Foligno, Nikitin & Savard fit in?
Atkinson (ehm) Calvert & Jenner are trying to break into the lineup, so I dont see them as core pieces.
Trading one of them could return something nice @draft.

But who would could you move without messing up the core?

my list would be Johansen, Foligno, Dubinsky, bob, johnson, murray, Horton, Jenner, Wennberg.

Johansen because it's obvious
Foligno because he is very valuable to the puck possesion game we play
Dubinsky because he is our leader
Bob because he is a young boardering elite goalie
Johnson because he is a top pairing minute eater that can play in every situation
Murray because he is our young upcoming star defender
Horton because he is our new high paid guy that at least buys him a few years as core.
Jenner because he is tenasious and appears to be a steal in the second round. He is already so strong on the walls, if he continuse to develop I can't wait to see what he becomes.
Wennberg because he is our top pick from last years draft and he appears like he can be a darn good player.

What do you mean "Where does Horton fit in?"? He's here until 2018 at the earliest; get used to him.

Guys coming off the shoulder issue, mid-season, and we're wondering if the front office wants to see him next year?

As far as the rest of it goes; I'll have to think about it. Much harder decisions then its been in the past.

I will say that this are the ones that I am sure of right ATM.

Wiz, Murray, Prout
Johansen, Horton, Calvert, Letestu, Jenner

Those are my Tier 1 players. As soon as Bob plays the way he can more consistently then he has I'll add him. He's having a hard time with the workload, from time-to-time.

Thats interesting, doubt we could get equal value back and he could really help Jenner, Wennberg, Dano, Rychel etc...lol

Edit: Forgot Umby too lol

just because we're stuck w him and his albatross contract doesn't mean he's a core piece. Core is like the 3-4 guys the entire team is built around. Guys like Horton and Foligno are complimentary pieces.

for example, LA's core is quick, Doughts, Kopitar, and Brown. Chicago is Kane, Toews, Keith and Seabrook.

The core is essentially what makes this team go, who drives the bus, who holds everyone accountable including them, who's part of the future (short or long term). Players who give it their all on the ice and off. 12 months a year. Practice and games. This is much more difficult now since we really don't have any insight directly into the locker room.

For me it would be:

Dubinsky, Johnson, Anisimov, Horton, Tyutin, Bobrovsky, Calvert, Jenner, Wisniewski, Foligno, Johansen, Letestu, Murray.

This is not to imply these players can't be moved but to me they offer more value to the CBJ and the "team" than likely another team would be willing to pay. I value them higher for their contributions now and their future. This is a fairly large group but I think the CBJ "core" needs to be a large group because there is no true go to player or players but any one of them can be a major factor any given night. They hold true to one another and embody what I've come to love about this team.

Any move of these players would have to involve a significant upgrade to leadership, skill and term.

I think the answer depends on everybody's definition of the word, "core." Everybody is probably going to have a different answer. For me, I wouldn't say it's the "core" per se, but the untouchables are only Johansen, Murray, Bobrovsky. When warranted, it also includes Dubinsky, Johnson, and Tyutin.

However, I have neglected to mention my more beloved players on the team, and that brings me to another point: The entire team is the core from top to bottom. Even if we don't make the playoffs this year, I'm glad we have stuck with the same team from the end of last year (sans notably Aucoin and Gaborik), am glad we stood pat and didn't mortgage the future at the trade deadline, and look forward to putting up wins next year comparable to what Colorado and their young core has done so far during the regular season this year. We have a logjam at defense, three 19 year olds playing out of their minds in junior/Europe,and an NHL team that for the past 12 months has seemingly been playing for the crest and not the name on the back of the sweater. Being a fan since October 7, 2000, this is the most proud I have been of this team, playoffs or not. I know acquisitions and releases will be made during the off-season, but I don't mind calling 20 of the guys on the NHL roster the "core."

Bob, Joey, Murray, Horton

I agree w Fro: Bob, Joey, Murray, Horton and I would add Jenner as the true "untouchable" core. To me there is also a secondary level that are viewed as key but can/will be moved for the right deal (as Xoggz aptly said only for significant upgrades in talent, leadership, term, etc) Dubi, Arty, JMFJ, Tyutin, Foligno, Wiz, and Calvert. To my mind, these are all key players that have made obvious contributions. Nevertheless, I think we have yet to see if Jarmo/JD feel there are other players that fit their brick by brick vision better (Callahan, L. Erikson, Edler/Erhoff) and these are guys that are "assets" that could be moved to get those players. Love the identity that is being developed but remain convinced there are going to be some changes before next year.

Who would everyone like to add (reasonably) most to the core next year:

ROR
Statsny
L. Erikson
Eberle
Yakupov
Edler
Ehrhoff
Callahan
Other?

Just names that come to mind based on scouting/rumors...I'm sure there are others that could be more legitimately added

People are using wildly different criteria, some include just a few players, some include most of the team. The only thing I can say with certainty is that there is no way guys like Anisimov (who just refound his game) and Horton (who needs to refind his game) should be considered more core than Dubinsky and Foligno, guys who control play and drive the bus for us on a consistent basis. They don't need a wake up call to go out and hit somebody, they're the guys who go out and wake other guys up. That's the heart of the team.

Here's who I see as the core of this team (from most to least important):

1. Bob, without question
2. Jenner, without his relentless forecheck and work behind the net, lots of the goals we are jennerating would never be scored. I can really see him as our next captain.
3. Johansen
4. Murray
5. Wisniewski

Honestly, there's not very many guys who are playing poorly right now. These 5, though, from what I can see, are the most key for us going forward. Probably add Dubi and Foligno, possibly JJ to the next few slots.

I gotta tell ya, there's hardly anyone here I'd want to replace. I have a love-hate fan relationship with Umberger and I'd like to strengthen the backup goaltending. Otherwise, keep them all. Umby can stay too.

NMC/NTC Overpaid and under-achieving. We couldn't even give him away :sarcasm:

Under achieving? Are you high? He's top 10 in points for defenseman.

Anyway, the core on the team that I would absolutely not move would be

Bob, Jenner, Johansen, Murray, Horton

I also agree with the other posters that said there's another tier of the core that is almost in this category, but not quite, and would be moved for a high high asking price, and that group is..

Johnson, Wisniewski, Foligno, Tyutin, and Dubinsky. MAYBE Anisimov, with his new outlook on his NHL career after the olympics, I think he might have turned the corner in his career to be consistent and dynamic offensive threat. But you never know, he's been streaky his whole career.

And the core in the farm I would not trade is

Wennberg, Rychel, Dansk, Bjorkstrand

LOL I like how you called Horton a complimentary piece and then go on to say Brown is apart of the LA core. Hilarious.

This pretty sums up my view. I think that the true core going forward is Bob, Joey & Murray. Horton if he bounces back to form and Jenner if he continues to develop would be there too but for the right deal I'd trade either one of them.

This team needs another high powered forward to pair with Joey to give the team a Getzlaff-Perry, Toews-Kane,Crosby-Kunitz, etc duo. Maybe Horton s the guy;maybe Wennberg or Ollie B develop into that role but without it I don't see this team as constructed ever winning a Cup.

We need a real solid #2 defenseman to pair with Murray or anchor the 2nd pair. Maybe that guy is here, I don't think so.

And we need a backup goalie capable of winning 12-15 games out of 20-24 starts or so like Ben Jones, Cam Talbot, Ben Scrivens, etc have done this year.

Three key additions and the development or continued good play by those who remain and this could be a very good team capable of contending for the Cup once the above are in place. 5-7 more years of only the guys we have, I don't see us being a real contender just a pretty good team that will always come up a bit short.

I'm not in a hurry to move people I just would, with the exception of the big 3, if the return filled one of what I see as a major need.

Regardless of whatever you may think; Horton is part of this core. I know we love to invent definitions to fit whatever agenda we have for the day. However, he was signed as one those idiotic bricks and that is how he will be treated.

Stuck with him? This is getting dumber and dumber as time goes on.

I would give up anyone not named Ryan or Bob for him.

I think those 3 (agreed by almost everyone) would be on my list and around them MGT should build for a "cup run", Nail would be perfect for it!
if you add NMC contracts, Horton/Umby & Tyutin/Wiz are in, that = 7 core players.
Dubi should make the list, if he ask for Horton/Umby money, which will make it 8

There's a ton of players that could be offered for any of those players above.
I doubt trading anyone like Arty, Foligno, Jenner, Johnson, Erixon, Calvert, Atkinson or the 1st could hurt the team.

Don't worry, maybe we can trade complimentary piece Horton for a significant core piece in Dustin Brown
