CFL: The CFL Thread: Part VI

We beat the f***ing Argos three times this season, failed to make the playoffs and get to watch them win the Grey Cup:

The dynasty talk for Winnipeg is over but if Toronto wins it again next year that would be 3 championships out of the last 4 years and 4 out of the past 8. Dynasty talk can start

Winnipeg fans must be getting annoyed at travelling just to see their team lose in the final. Maybe next year will be their year when they play at home.

Crowd at BC place was definitely pro Winnipeg. But it was very cool to see a good variety of jerseys in the crowd. Although mostly BC Lions and Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Winnipeg honking three in a row as significant favourites is surprising for sure, but it's almost more shocking that their performance has declined in every subsequent appearance. They were careless with the ball again in this one, but they weren't even mentally engaged to begin with. Weak effort all around from Winnipeg, hard to explain really. Maybe they really thought it was a going to be a formality with Arbuckle back there.

The Winnipeg transplants that live in Metro Vancouver sure made up for the pro Winnipeg crowd.

The Argos did beat the Bombers twice in the regular season, once with Cameron Dukes at starting QB during the Kelly suspension, so the Bombers couldn't have taken them all that lightly going into the game.

But that still doesn't explain how they pretty much no-showed a game in which they were a heavy favourite, and then absolutely crumbled in the second half.

For a team that has been so dominant for long stretches of the last four seasons (that 2-6 stretch this year excepted), it's amazing how they have never been able to put together a convincing performance in the Grey Cup. Even the 2021 game that they won was pulled off by the absolute narrowest of margins.

Such a CFL thing. Winnipeg dominated a great Hamilton team that was favoured in 2019...got pretty lucky against them again in 2021 but showed their true class in coming back late...then flub three straight winnable games to prevent themselves from becoming a dynasty. I don't think that was in too many people's script. The chips just never fall how we expect in November if this league, 6 of the last 8 Grey Cup games have been won by a pretty big underdog. And you can only claim weird weather may have swung the game in one of them.

Rarely watch cfl now but still impressive that Winn has been in 5 straight grey cups.
But man those digital ads on the field suck. Happy that they stopped painting them onto the field for the paying fans. But sheesh. It looks bad on tv.

...what does BC think hiring Buck is going to do for them considering how hated he was in WPG?

Co-ordinator is more about schemes and playcalling. Head Coach is more about building the right staff, getting the right players, having leadership. I actually think Buck will be a better HC than he ever was an OC. We all loved Buck the person, we in Winnipeg hated Buck the play caller. It's just a different job description.

The winningest coach in Blue Bombers history now (Mike O'Shea) was never a O/D co-ordinator. It's just a different skill set from OC to HC. For an opposite example Paul LaPolice was/is a fantastic OC, success everywhere he goes. But he's now had multiple chances at HC and failed each and every time. Co-ordinator roles and Head Coaching roles are vastly different requiring different skills.
