No, doesn’t fit their brand of hockey. Viktor fyodorov is their type. Speedy grinder that was once a high end prospect (still is), plus he’s russian.

Others:

Mathis Preston
Marcus Nordmark
Adam Andersson

Preston, Aaram-Olsen, Nordmark, Villeneuve, Goljer. Those are the names I could see the Canes going for.

Yeah not sure about Villenueve. I don't think they typically draft the undersized defensemen. Usually they like size on the back-end and small grinders up front. I agree with Aram-Olsen, that is very possible

I put Villeneuve here because Ghost is a UFA in 2027 and they like having one high-octane offensive guy in the mix, even with sheltered 5-on-5 minutes. If he pans out, he'd be a long-term piece in that vein. Canes historically take talent first over size, and they're almost certainly trading down.

You have one guy ok maybe 2 guys in your lineup from recent drafts and its a success? I think trading and recouping from trades is what makes them successful. Lots of teams would have fallen off a cliff after that Rantanen deal couple that with some astute FA signings and Rob Brindamour coaching ability and its easy to see why they have success.

It seem only Nikishin panned out so far

That being said holding rights forever at no cost is a big advantage
still pretty high on Artamonov and Ryabkin just had a really solid season as an 18yo split between the AHL and the Q. Figure one of those two is going to be the next Russian to break into the team.

Wouldn't be shocked if the draft strategy changes with the new rights rules though, since they can't just draft guys and let them develop in the KHL/VHL indefinitely without having to sign them before they're ready to make the roster.

It'll be more strictly BPA with the new rules.

Pugachyov plays a textbook Canes type of hockey.

In your face, never stops motor, relentlessly forechecks and circles around the net.

Plus... Russian 😏

I hope my habs take him but if not, I could see the Canes taking him.

I might be wrong since I haven't researched it in-depth, but I'm pretty sure the new draft rights changes (age 22) don't apply to players drafted out of Russia, as that is governed by a different section of the CBA that wasn't adjusted. I'm not CBA expert, but I think Russian players rights are still held indefinitely.
