The Caleb Malhotra Groupthink Delusion

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
me after any theTDC post:

No, but seriously though, thank you a lot for going out of your way to make this impressively long discussion post, along with your other decently-sized inputs in other prospects threads. I'm excited to see what comes next, even if I don't necessarily agree with all of it. I personally think Malhotra is rated too high, but only time will tell..

I actually got through most of this post and it's actually good work and I agree with a lot of it.

Man, It's going to be a bad situation when Vancouver picks him #3 because he has a lot of bust potential and it will be compounded by the pressure of playing under his dad. The media is going to roast him extra hard when he struggles or if there is favoritism. Because he will struggle, that much is clear with this analysis.

I see them going with a D and framing it as they need a D more than a forward just to avoid this situation.

Bjork is the better C pick than Malhotra imo, but that’s a direct knock on their coach now if they go that route.

While I like Malhotra and have him in a group of probably a half dozen players that I wouldn't be upset with at 3rd Ov (although I wouldn't draft him as a son of the coach), I agree that the hype has spiraled a bit out of control. Since the draft lottery happened, he's gone from a projection of a likely top 6 center with 1B upside, to a franchise center that will shut down the likes of McDavid and Celebrini. I see solid but unspectacular skating that is now being described as "elite". A lot of people calling OP a hater, but it's nice to see someone actually show their work and question the Malhotra hype machine.

As a Malhotra enjoyer, I respect the effort and energy put in to knock him down.

FWIW, I definitely agree that he has been miscast as some super two-way guy (which also gave him an unfair projection as some defensively responsible 3C ceiling guy for a period of time). IMO he's more of a playmaking C with a decent defensive game at this point in his career.

After pouring so much time, effort and love into breaking down his game, I hope your team takes Malhotra, even if they have to pay a great deal to move up and down, just so you can get your wish.
