And that is the main point I guess. If they can win this game, this team of "chokers" and "losers" who can never win will have gone as far as the beloved Sundin and Gilmour Leafs ever did.

These are legacy altering times
Well said.

Would love to see the Leafs have success so quickly after purging Doobler and his ilk.

Game 7 is make or break for this core.

I don't care what past GMs did, 2nd round is not great, they will make changes if that is all they do.

I've called Dubas a failure here for only getting so far, I won't proclaim Treliving a success with the same results.

Your post is just silly, why are we pretending if they lose in the 2nd round it is automatically a successful season? You want them to run it back if they do?
5th in the NHL in points and a division champ. New heights for this group.

I think you need to look at lots of factors when assessing the season, if they lose today...

How far did they go in the playoffs? Further than ever before in this era. Yes, G7 is further. Check

Where did they finish in the regular season? First Atlantic division title of the era. Check

Success in first year with a new coach and new system. Yep, the above two points are success and we have a new coach. Check

Key players under contract beyond this season. Matthews, Nylander, Knies (RFA), Laughton, Domi, Rielly, Tanev, McCabe, Carlo, OEL, Benoit, Stolarz, and Woll.

Growth from younger guys and prospects with a chance to contribute over the next year or two. That's Knies, Woll, Holmberg, Robertson, Cowan, Quillan, Hildeby, Akhtyamov, maybe even Danford and one of the kids we just signed.

Cap space. We can bring it all back. If we lose tonight...12.5 x 8 for Mitch and 5 x four or five (years) for JT. Done. We are saving $3.5M on those two (combined) and we use the cap increase (and move our Kampf and Jarnkrok) to cover Knies, Woll and McCabe increases. We still have room to add.

What would NOT running it back actually look like? We need to get better and not JUST different. Maybe we turn the $22M for our two UFAs into Bennett, Ekblad and Marchand? Are we better? Can we possibly even pull this off? Plan B might be let them walk and sign a bunch of guys for one year deals and then get McDavid. Some risk to that for sure....maybe we pull for Edmonton to win this year if we don't, to make that more likely to happen?

So run it back?

Seems weird to call the season a success and then say they should change things.

Marner’s more than likely gone unless they go to the SCF.

No? Winning the division, winning a round and being one of the final five teams in hockey is not a fantastic season? Those are a lot of steps forward.
Yep that would be considered a successful season and enough reason to run it back in their minds.

No, I am saying run it back and calling out what the alternatives are to support my approach.

Having said this, only at a number than makes sense on Marner and JT.

Leafs last won the cup in 1967, vs the defending Champs (Montreal)

We're playing the defending champs tonight in game 7

We have a former Habs captain wearing #67

He scored a goal in game 6 to force a game 7

'67 + 7 (game 7) = 74

#74 assisted on the goal by #67

34 + 16 + 23 = 73

Leafs won game 6 to force a game 7

73 - 6 = 67

I get that and I am back and forth on this myself. I don't see how anyone can say this without discussing the parameters around it.

If Marner wanted $8M x 8 would we want him back? Yes. If he wanted $15 x 5 would we want him back? I wouldn't.

I think a number more than Rantanen (keeps MM happy) and less than Matthews (keeps everyone else happy) for full term is a deal that makes sense. I don't really like the alternatives.

The rising cap weighs into my thinking too. We can add around this team now. Four years of basically flat cap hurt that.

I wonder if anyone's considered that Marner's decision to stay or go may not be based on how well this team does these playoffs but rather him just wanting to get out of town, maybe he really wants to play with player X and/or on team X, maybe it's something personal between him and MLSE, the team, coaches, etc?

In other words, I'm not assuming that if the Leafs go deep, even to the Final, that it's automatic he's staying. Or conversely, if they flop tonight it's 100% he's gone.

I just hope tonight, for starters, he puts in a performance that makes us (most of us) want him back. That's probably the best scenario for everyone.

The fact that he hasn’t already re-signed makes him leaving a strong possibility.

Dude.... I'm gonna be downtown for the game tonight and this math is strangely comforting. Huge energy in the Tronnah air today, let's seal the deal and advance. GLG
