They scored 1 goal in the 3rd period while getting 0 shots on goal in the 3rd period.

I have to believe that’s an NHL record. This pathetic franchise should hand a banner in the rafters for this accomplishment.

The Sabres had zero shots on goal. With Carolina having their goalie pulled McLeaod raced for a loose puck and had an empty net. He was slashed from behind, breaking his stick. The goal automatically counts but no shot on goal was registered.

In addition, McLeod was the guy who was slashed on a breakaway causing the awarded goal — but he never touched the puck, so the awarded goal went to Thompson who originally hit the post with a clearing attempt.

Again — Thompson was credited with a goal after missing the net and being nowhere near the breakaway.

To top it off, the fans threw hats for McLeod, who didn’t actually get a hat trick.

That play was just full of weird outcomes.

There's still time for the league to take away an Ottawa draft pick

They’ve changed the goal back and forth between McLeod and Tage twice now. They don’t know how to score it…that’s how weird it is. Tage was the last touch so logic says this is where they’ll end up ( and where they are now) but he’s being credited with a goal on a shot that missed the net…which is hilarious. McLeod drew the penalty coming in on a break and having his stick obliterated by a slash…which is what is the actual cause of the goal. But he never touched it. So we have, in essence, a goal awarded on a missed shot because it was first awarded to a player who was certain to score into the empty net (as is the rule)…but his stick was sent to the shadow realm before he could make contact.

It’s all very funny. Buffalo having zero shots in the period either way and walking away with a goal on those 0 shots makes it hilarious. And probably historical.

Update: changed for a fourth time back to McCleod hat trick

We may have to wait until their careers are over to solve this for good.

The Aristocrats!

The Sabres are so good they don't even need to shoot the puck to score goals
I was going to go with “The Sabres have spent so much time blowing leads they found a way to score into an empty net without touching the puck or hitting the net”. It’s like they’re the infinite monkey who managed to type out Hamlet.

They seem to have re-reversed the goal back to McLeod; the rule likely will need better clarification however.

Essentially, the last player to puck scores the goal typically (Thompson)

However when a play that would result in a penalty shot is on an empty net the player rewarded with the shot gets the goal. (McLeod)

However he never actually touched the puck on his "breakaway" (Thompson)

However he would of touched the puck had he not been interfered with (McLeod)

Quite the run around

Based on description, and I haven't seen the goal, it should be Mcleod's goal.

He was the one who drew the penalty (shot/goal) so, even though he didn't touch the puck, the play doesn't happen and the goal isn't awarded unless he does what he does.

Sounds wild.

reminds me of the statistical oddity in football where a player might be credited with 60 receiving yards and 1 receiving touchdown, while recording 0 receptions

Josh Allen had a receiving TD with 0 catches just weeks ago right down (several) streets from the arena this happened in. He threw it to Amari Cooper who lateraled it back to Allen who ran it in. Official score for Allen: 1 pass TD, 1 receiving TD, 0 receptions

Maybe there something in the winter air in Buffalo this year

Those types of plays go down in fantasy football history

Oh the ESPN boxscore still has the Hatty to McLeod.

Just shows how terrible the Sabres have been with a lead this season.

*cough*coaching!*cough*. Sorry, I know we’re all just havin fun here, but when the team is good enough to build big leads over good teams, and then always looks lost in the 3rd- coaching.

But hey, they won! Woo! f***in weird. Also the goal, that was weird too. Just friggin give it to McLeod, silly to try and follow rules on such an oddity. He was closest to the actual goal, it gives him a hat trick, screw it. Unless that makes it goalie interference, idk anymore.

Probably the ugliest hat trick anyone’s ever scored in the NHL (a shot from barely inside the zone that the goalie should’ve stopped, a weird chip-in right off a faceoff, and…whatever this is lol).
