The Bruins aren’t only a mediocre hockey team, they’re becoming something far worse

Longtime columnist with Boston.com

Who just wrote one very bad "commentary".

He claims the Bruins are "maturing" into something much worse than a mediocre team, but fails to say what that is.

He also uses his pulpit to present absolutely nothing beyond what's been discussed on this Board and every talk show for a long time by average fans.

If you're going to use your role as a "columnist" you might want to have something novel to say. Opportunistic shark smelling blood in water -- nothing more.

Who gives a ****? Sometimes a column is just an observation designed to highlight a current situation.

Why does he need to offer solutions for his opinion to have merit? If I go to a restaurant and the meal stinks, do I need to be able to tell the chef how to do his job to call out how much this chicken sucks?

That's a hell of a point

I agree..... just hate it when a Shaunessy/Bud Collins type weighs in on a topic they know about as much as the average fan.

I don't dispute what he says..... it just that his opinion on this is as relevant as one of us saying same thing. Actually....... in reality, maybe Wilburs opinion holds less relevance. Neeeiiiigghh.

I'm guessing the answe boils down to is there a fix?

I can point out the weather is cold today. .. but if I use my observation to take a slam at the local tv weather guy than I'm basically being a useless complainer

I can make an observation that alot of people might wish for better finances during an economic downturn... and point out how some gov program might make the situation worst for certain citizens... but again how is my observation useful unless there is a working solution?

Any newborn bird can squawk for mom and if they are lucky they might get a worm... but for my money complaints that carry with them idea for fix are far more intersting

Wilbur might be right, but really it's just another Boston sports writer hit piece of negativity and whining. No fixes, no suggestions, just a redheaded b%#ch Shaughnessy-like smackdown. He can go back to the Pats anytime.

He's making a general observation based on the general Boston sports scene as a Boston sports columnist.

Dismissing the observation/opinion because he doesn't offer a "fix" is very ignorant. You may not like Shaughnessy for whatever reason, but dismissing based on personal emotion toward the person rather than the logic of the actual content is dumb.

Its not what he said in the article, its the fact he is a Patriots/NFL writer. WTF does he know? Its reads like a typical Shaughnessy like hit piece. Throw poo from afar like a coward. When has he ever been in the locker room or even down at the Garden?

What? you don't know the Bs suck right now? Its all confirmed because Wilbur wrote a cursory garbage piece? Ohhh okay. What observation skills Wilbur has, remarkable, Pultzer all the way.

Holy snikes! Are you even from Boston? Or just too young to know what a POS Shaughnesy is. Just who,do you think the players current and past are talking about when they leave Boston and its crappy sports media? There's a list of players a mile long that would rip Shaunessy's head off.

Ignorant is refusing to try understanding what others are saying.

No one is dismissing his opinion. They are generally saying that he's simply stating the obvious. However given that he doesn't write about the Bruins, he's just an opportunistic ass who's throwing chum in already shark infested water.

This.

We all know the Bruins are horrid. I have no issue with Shinzawa, KDP or to a lesser degree Haggerty writing this. But Wilbur? I don't think so. It has all the earmarks of a Shaunessy hit piece when he starts writting about anything but baseball. Its cowardly nevermind incredibly lazy.

Another Globe writer that occasionally ventures over from writing, trying to write, about other sports teams in Boston. Attempts to take shots at the Bruins and falls on his face just like Mazz. Needs to stick with the Pats and Sox.

Yeah Sox to a degree. He's football all the way. Ex CFL pro player, very very good college career. I like his Pats articles, they are good. Funny thing, I don't remember him ever writing about the Bruins at all. I have always liked Wilbur, this article was beneath his ability. Probably under the gun to write something, so he called up Shaunessy for pointers.

I agree, well said. I thought the very same thing when I was reading the above post's. He is just writing his observation, his opinion and its on point for the most part.

Wrong. Many, many more than what you or I mutter on a hockey fan board.

I tend to usually agree with this sentiment, that we don't know much on a hockey chat board. Especially a board that relished chasing several members of the Boston Globe press out of here through being huge jerks to them.

However, Wilbur is not your guy. This was a cowardly fluff piece on a subject he does don't usually cover nor does he watch. Dude is football all the way and he is very insightful with the Pats. Its fine to have opinions, its another to pass off unknowledgeable expertise or in this case an obvious opinion as journalism.

Just to be clear, I believe that most of us 'know more' than many Sport Writers whom only dabble in hockey; however, that post stated 'who cares?; Just being semantic here but, very few care about you & I knowing more.

As for chasing writers away and being rude to professional newcomers who have attempted to enrich this site from time to time over the years....I cannot understand it for the life of me. Maybe it some kind of trailer park mentality? The 'small pen' theory?

Whatever it is, I see it on social media everyday and It seems to be a common social sickness that is pretty weak and jaundiced. Certainly a curiosity.

haven`t heard a solution here either unless you consider firing Julien the solution, oh, and going out and finding a top 2 D-man and top 6 forward which is oh so simple.

I`ve not read this guy`s column before, don`t know anything about his background however, I didn`t read his article as anything more than being an honest assessment of the current state of the B`s and one that I`ve been screaming about since day 1, they are mediocre at best

It certainly doesnt help that the Bruins are the worst team while being the most expensive ticket wise (Patriots obviously are more expensive but football always is)

Maybe they'd like it better if Wilbur offered up great insights like it's hard to play back to back games, or compressed schedules are difficult, or players are banged up right now, or we ran into another hot backup goalie???

If only we had the problem of running a hot backup goalie out there... That's just one of the many, many issues that plagues this year's version of the Bruins. But this has been a sinking ship for years. It's just about time we finally admit that the emperor is wearing no clothes and we need to do something about it now.

This comes to mind for me about posters complaining about a non Bruins sports writer criticizing the Bruins.

Yup, the better way is to carry pitch forks and torches to the Garden. Target a player, aka Hayes (insert name here), with all the hate, viterol and hyperbole one can muster and sprinkle in some ever soooo witty nicknames like "Clode". Yup, I like your way better.
