The best Japanese player of all time?

If you see a thread asking for the best Scottish player you won't get stupid answers like Bagpipes O'Haggis. Asians are frequently mocked for their names in English.

Nothing to educate about there.

----

The other discourse is legitimate as Asia/Asian is both a cultural identity and geopolitical in nature.
I would not consider Kariya Asian unless he identifies with the culture himself; lineage/birthplace alone are not the sole determinants in my opinion.

Gotcha, the joke was so tired and dumb I didn’t even realize it was a joke. Ya, that’s obnoxious.

You really don’t think the idea of a hockey player named Bagpipes O’Haggis is worth a chuckle? It’s just a silly name, like Boaty McBoatface.
I wasn't using it for comedic effect and I didn't think you'd be defending stuff like

So what do you think?

I didn’t defend that post. I responded to your statement:

“If you see a thread asking for the best Scottish player you won't get stupid answers like Bagpipes O'Haggis.”

With my opinion:

“But if you did, it would be funny.”

^^^ see how that didn’t in any way involve the post you just quoted?

Idk about Japanese but little known fact; Vitali Kravtsov is the all time leading Asian-born scorer in NHL history.

Without looking it up im pretty sure there is some sort of player born east of the Urals that has scored more points.

o'haggish & mchaggis would be irish. machaggis would be scottish. asian isn't a unified culture, burmese have no allegiance to tajikistanies. sum yung guy was a joke from waynes world.

best japanese player is kariya, because he is japanese

"Paul probably doesn't fully realize his importance to Japan,"
says Montreal Canadiens assistant coach Dave King, a three-time
Canadian Olympic coach who is general manager of the Japanese
team for the 1998 Games. "He's the most revered NHL player
there. Sure, they like Wayne Gretzky and Raymond Bourque, but
because of Paul's heritage, he's the guy the focus will be on.
There's not a lot of hockey in Japan, but they know the game.
The Japanese see themselves in Paul

His name is based on Akira Toriyama, who created Dragonball. Hense, Akira. AND, considering his brother's name is Krilin, which was based on the character from the DragonBall franchise, I'm not wrong...
Of all the DBZ characters they could've named the younger brother, they chose Krillin? Really? The guy who dies the most times in the series?

Personally, I would've gone with Vegeta.

Not case closed (1229 NHL points regular season) Evgeni Malkin was born in Magnitogorsk which occupies land in both Europe and Asia so technically Malkin is Asian.
While I don't know about technically since like the other poster said it would depend on which side of the city Malkin was born (?), it's a simple matter of spirit vs letter. Nobody would consider Ural cities to be Asia. And as a wise man said, "if you need more than 3 words to explain your title, you probably don't fit the title".

If we're allowing fictional players, there's an anime called "PuraOre! Pride of Orange". The story apparently follows a group of young Japanese girls in a knitting club who decide that it would be fun to try ice hockey, even though none of the girls know anything about hockey or skating. So they put on some skates, and then go play against Team Canada and win.

(...I haven't seen the show, but supposedly it isn't very realistic...)

Nick Antropov definitely has a decent shot at that title with 465 points. Funny enough both other NHL players from his town - Khudobin and Nabokov - are goalies.

Edit: nevermind, Alex Mogilny is from Khabarovsk, case closed.
Mogilny is a good one, but case is not closed. We need to know, on which side of the Ural river was Evgeny Malkin born. He is from Magnitogorsk, this city is literally located on the border between Europe and Asia

Huh? People seem confused on whether Japanese heritage should be considered Japanese. Ignorance, maybe, and you’re right that a Jim Smith wouldn’t be considered the best British hockey player if his parents came over a long time ago, but I think you educate there rather than condemn.

How’s that work? Just depends what side of the city you grew up in?

Anyways, “borders are just lines, drawn in sand, with a stick.” - from the excellent Japanese band “Enter Shikari”.

Oh, and it’s Tsujimoto. People still talk about him today, so it must be true.
Enter Shikari are british unless it was some kind of joke

And the line while true is also false.

Great to see some real casual racism in this thread that you wouldn't see if the OP were asking about other ethnic backgrounds.

Thankfully not all replies, but certainly interesting to see.

Never change, HFBoards.
Where did you see racism? Don't mix ignorance with racism.

To the topic I am not familiar at all with Japanese players but checking some stats Norio Suzuki is the best scorer of all time in Japan's league and has decent stats in WHC B too.
