I added that to emphasize bad drafting.
If Danielson, Pellikka and Augustine hit (as they're all trending to), you're really gonna be bothered that they whiffed on their 5th pick of that draft huh? That.. seems not totally fair. Since you have Detroit bottom 3 in the league, are you hyperanalyzing the top 29 teams drafts that way?

Also improving from a bottom 10 team to just outside the bottom 10 isn’t exactly much to write home about
They were as close to top 10 as they were to the bottom 10 last season.

Also calling them "bottom 10" is extremely generous. From 2016-2021 they were the worst team in the league. That's pretty much when Yzerman started trying to improve the roster.

especially since it’s about to go on 9 years since a playoff appearance.
Yzerman isn't responsible for all *8 years of the playoff drought, I'd argue he's not responsible for most of it. If Holland & Co. had hit on even one 1st rounder from 2015-2018 Detroit's probably a playoff team right now. Or, you know, if Philly didn't pull their goalie for no reason.

The top 3 and 5 (of 6) of the top 11 teams are no state income tax franchises. Shocker!
How can you even cry about taxes the only reason you are relevant is 10 straight first overall picks , these fans of canadian teams keep acting like they havent had the worst management groups in the NHL , keep crying about taxes tho.

I like this line of thought, it shows me that your incapable of grasping the basic premise that there are actually other teams in the league who are also doing their best to win the cup.

Unless you can define success as something other than winning a cup then I really have no idea what world you are living in.

Maybe winning more games in the 2nd round over the entire Cap Era than a team that just came into the league 2 seasons ago? I dunno. :dunno:

You pretending that there's not a mammoth sized gap between winning a Cup and getting kicked out of the playoffs early year after year after year after year tells me you're incapable of coming up with a decent defense for the Leafs' failures, though.

Leafs should be 13-17

They are behind the Buffalo Sabres who haven't made the playoffs in 13 years.

Detroit who is going for year 9.

Ottawa who is going for year 8

Utah who hasn't played a game as Utah and is the former Arizona

Then you get to Chicago, SJ and the Ducks.

The Athletic should be ashamed to post this.
It's about asset management and Toronto is among the worst in the league at that, there is no vision just overpaying losers who fail to produce time and time again. If it was a competent organization Shanahan and co would've been gone after Montreal and massive changes would've been made.

The team can go as high as in the top 10 if they shed Marner and Tavares or bring them back at extremely cheap deals (7-8 for Marner, 1-2 for Tavares) or they can go as low as last if they resign them to massive contracts yet again (11+ for Marner, 7+ for Tavares).

The team had 3 playoff wins in a season under Burke and Ferguson, they have 5 in a season with arguably the most talented group post 67 with Shanahan and co. They've earned their low confidence assessment, but I doubt they care, who would getting paid bundles of cash to be marginally better than an "awful era" (Ferguson/Burke) with one of the most talented teams in the league.

Leafs fans lack confidence in management because they consistently make the same mistakes, particularly with contracts. They tanked and lucked into Matthews, but they haven’t been able to build around him. Actually without him they would basically be Buffalo and likely would have missed the playoffs more than just that one time.

Exactly my point. The only way about 8 NHL teams have any chance of being relevant is by tanking AND hoping to draft a generational talent. Thanks for proving my point. 🤣🤣🤣

It’s the same lopsided advantages the Canadiens had pre-1970… the only reason they won 23 of their Cups.

The difference is if they exceed expectations you have fringe all-star talents, you could argue ASP would be a normal all-star. A team like say Anaheim if one player exceeds expectations you have a Hall of Famer.

TBH i think Billy G is down so much in MIN because more and more people are getting the impression he's a jerk. I think he's done a fine job considering cap constraints and whatnot.

Man, you really managed to be wrong about everything you just said.
