A league that so heavily pushes gambling once again finds itself in a predicament due to gambling. Shocking I tell you.

Why would you assume this is about gambling? I'd say leaking confidential information is looked down on in most fields and has nothing to do with gambling.

This has nothing to do with gambling companies. Nobody is live betting the NHL draft order. Marek was being fed the picks ahead of time by the NHL and leaked them to his buddy who was idiotic enough to actually tweet them out. How can the league ever trust this guy again?
How many guys do this? Woj. Adam Schefter. Shams. Every NFL draft pick is tweeted on twitter before the pick is announced. Stop.

The NHL brought up the tweets to the Vegas gaming commission. Why? Gambling!!!!!!!!!!!

Pat McAfee during the NFL draft was hilarious. They said the names of who was picked like 1 minute before it was announced and they got yelled at for it. So they started saying "it might be a 6'4" kid from Iowa with a bowl cut who played RT last year - just a guess" but stopped saying their actual names.

It's all so ****ing stupid - put your pitchforks down people.

Also it doesn't influence betting as you can't bet on exact draft positions anymore after the #1 pick goes off the board. Maybe there's some bookies who will let you but that would be news to me.

It happened in Vegas, that's part of why it's all happening

I have zero doubts that if the draft was in Minnisota, or Ottawa, or any other city in the league, nothing is coming of it.

The Nevada Gaming Commision were involved, so someone in the gambling world was upset by some of the things getting out before they happened, whether people had the ability to use that or not.

One thing I see causing a big ruckus is It was essentially announced that Sennecke was going 3rd overall to the Ducks shortly before the draft, can't remember by who, but sportsbook betting was still open. He was a very big longshot prior to this

Senneck was sitting at +600 or something close 2 hours before the draft, and then shot down to -150 shortly after that was announced. That is an absolutely gigantic, gigantic liabilty for Vegas and sportsbooks, should people get on the line quickly, whether many did or not I have no clue.

The draft, and the way it is monitered, will be changing in this new gambling landscape. The draft being in Vegas just highlighted that by a significant margin.

The league was concerned about the potential misuse or dissemination of insider information, league and media sources said. Gaming industry experts said that draft “leakage” and “tipping” is relatively common. Possessing what’s deemed “insider information” is not inherently problematic; only if that information is used as a means of financial gain does it become an integrity issue. According to a publicly available document from the Nevada Gaming Control Board on requirements licensed books must adhere to regarding wagers on the NHL Draft, “acceptance of wagers which involve a specific player must cease 24 hours prior to the start of the first round. Acceptance of all other wagers must cease prior to the start of their respective round.”
The books were not taking action during the draft. They are not allowed. 24 hours before the draft.

The NHL has a problem with the salary cap websites. They are clueless bots.

Marek lost his job. For what? Nobody gained financially. They couldn't even if they wanted to game the system.

I can say with 100% certainty that all of Fanduel, Bet365, Betway, etc. were taking bets involving specific players the day of the draft, up until an hour before.

That’s not proven, NFL closes betting at 5pm on draft day, So I doubt NHL would be 24 hours. We have no idea when books closed, if they did.
Marek screwed up, and now authorities are investigating.

Sediel has been doing this for the past 5 years, he's gotten the entire 1st round almost unanimously correct since 2019. NHL isn't unaware of a guy working for the Barrie Colts going 20/20 on who is being picked minutes before the pick is made for years.

Hasn't been an issue until this year, and it makes sense with gambling having a stranglehold on sports and the draft happening in Vegas with the Nevada Gaming Commision
but betting was locked down 24 hours before.

24 is false, NFL shuts down 2 hours before. No idea on NHL, might have been at the start.
He deserved to be fired, not to mention he wasn’t very good.

He was leaking the picks to a friend who was in turn betting on who the next pick was. The Nevada gaming was involved in the situation and possibly still could be

I think the league had an agreement with the network to not "leak " info because believe it or not, people bet on who the 5th pick will be etc

The league opened this Pandora's box as has been astutely stated by another poster by getting in bed with gambling entities

It's only a matter of time before game fixing will be an issue with players, refs or C all of the above
My understanding from reading about this is that all betting on picks was supposed to be ceased well before the event/Marek leaked anything…but who knows what actually happened. Personally, I don’t sports bet so I have no idea how any of this works.

Online it definitely was not, on Bet365 and Betway I have bets of Sennecke going 3rd to the Ducks an hour before the draft began, and I cashed out a bet I placed at 1pm that afternoon on Buium going 3rd two hours before the draft began.

He wasn't betting, he was just posting it to twitter under the guise of him not actually having been told. Once the draft starts you can't bet on the draft.

It's genuinely disgusting how infected pro sports have become with gambling. I used to enjoy sports gambling but I've just become disgusted with the oversaturation of it at this point.

Without the gambling aspect of this, no one would give a shit about Marek leaking the picks. But because someone can make money off of betting on the picks before they're officially announced, it's suddenly a problem.

some entities allow bets in progress. i didn't follow along that night so i don't know what went on--- i'm most familiar with Bovada---not sure what they did. nonetheless. the NHL asked for this by taking money from gambling services

and let's not fool ourselves into thinking that GMs and other team personnel aren't leaking picks to their favorite media people
