I'm sorry, this is kind of off-season season thread, but we are in a semi-off-season so what the hell.

I´ve been following hockey since the early nineties, is it just me or has the amount of goalies having trappers in right hand smaller than it used to be? For some reason I have a feeling there used to be more goalies like that then? The only one who I can name now is Hutchinson. Is there a reason to this or is just a coincidence?

I know some of you know about this so I wanted to ask you guys.

Usually left handed people shoot right. It’s a little more complicated when it comes to catching but 8/10 of the goalies you see who catch right are left handed.

Here's an old thread:

Seems to be on the low side lately but it bounces around a lot over history.

I think it is about the normal amount. Sometimes there will be more and sometimes less, but around normal to me.

I would not be surprised if the number would remain low going forward.

Equipment is major expense for junior goalies and since there are less right-catch goalies, there are less used equipment available making it even more expensive for right-catch junior goalies potentially encouraging parents even more to guide right-catch players away from goalie position.

Reminds me of a message board I used to frequent for hockey goalies. Us right-catching goalies had our own sticky thread. The running joke in the thread is that a lot of the posts in there were us selling each other our used gloves and sticks, sometimes for much cheaper than buying a new set of gloves and a stick. This was back in the days where the two main online retailers we liked to go to were Hockey Giant and Hockey Monkey (those sites may still be operating but I don't play anymore so I haven't looked), and gloves/sticks for right-catching goalies was generally either extremely expensive (something like $800 for a blocker and trapper) or heavily discounted because all the left-catching pairs were sold out. I ended up buying a used set of gloves for under $100 thanks to that thread, but then went out and spent like $250 on a goal stick.

Handling the puck when I played goal was also very strange, because unlike most left-handed people, when I skated out I shot left, so everything was backwards when I played goal since a right-catching goalie handles the puck as if they were shooting right. Needless to say, I was not a good puck handling goalie (nor was I a very good goalie at all, but that's beside the point).
