Sidebar...

As I was checking out Zegras AHL history I ran across Guhles older brother Brendan Guhle. This looks like the classic 5 year younger brother trying to surpass the older brother...and successful at it. Both are defenseman but obviously not the same caliber.

I'm surprised when guys of that caliber stop playing professional hockey. Those high end AHLers can make 10-20K euros/month tax free, all expenses paid (house, some food, car), paid 12 months in Euro professional leagues. At 20K euros, that's a 372K net CAD salary, with no housing/car payments. These guys can make legit money until they're 35-40, come back, finish their diploma (if needed) or work in hockey/in a trade and have a comfortable life.

Zegras & CC had very similar compete levels as they arrived into the NHL. One got MSL & an organization putting together a best in class athlete- centric development program 1/2 way into his rookie season (a rookie season that had him looking AHL bound despite the promising playoff showing a few months earlier).... The other got Eakins then Cronin.

Context matters.

We'll see what happens in the next year or two. If Z stays in Anaheim and can't figure it out under Q, that'll be telling.
Q is an asshole too.

Agreed but some personality traits are hard to miss. But as I stated above, if he comes here and prove me wrong... great! He is not someone I would target however.
True. And he has appeared to be a selfish player. He has played on a team with incompetent coaches and mediocre players so far in the NHL but he should still be giving 100% even if it is just to increase his market value. Flamboyant is fine in small doses but taking selfish penalties is not.
If he comes cheap, and his value should be at it's lowest, it is worth the risk assuming there is no better option available.

Depends on how Verbeek values him and of course how HuGo value him at this point.
We know there was a deal in place last draft between MTL and ANA for Zegras, like him or not. The Habs decided not to go forward with the deal when they got the opportunity to draft Demidov. Hugues mentioned something about duplicates after the draft.

I'm not sure what could have changed between then and now for them to consider trading for Zegras again.
I guess it's not impossible, but it doesn't seem likely at this point.

The habs had high hope in Dach being the 2C last summer so there wasn't a big need to acquire a top 6 center. They just needed more offensive talent on the team, so Zegras made sense. After getting Demidov and seeing the other kids develop, the need for high offensive skills has diminished. However now, there is a big need to acquire a top 6 center. So Zegras is likely back in the menu.

Sub 40% face-off player last couple years.

Sure, he can be dynamic and shit, but he can’t win draws and isn’t strong defensively. He wouldn’t replace Slaf or CC on the wing, nor replace Demidov. Sure, maybe he can slot in as a winger on the second line but it still doesn’t address the 2C position.

Oh and can we stop pretending he’s a C too? Guy is dreadful at faceoffs we don’t need more soft unidimensional wingers cosplaying as centers on this team.

He should be avoided like the plague and if Hughes trades for him he should be fired on the spot. Yup, I said it.

Laine produced 75% of his goals on the PP. If we have to compare gambling on Laine vs gambling on Zegras, both with 1 year left, I think I'd rather go with Zegras. It's not like Demidov, Caufield, Suzuki and Hutson couldn't figure out the power play without Laine

laine wasn't a gamble, we were paid to take him. if the ducks are interested in zegras - laine swap i'd gladly do it.
