Indeed. But, like Caufield, you don't add a skilled player like Z to be a defensively focused player... The overall team defense improves because of how that talent helps tilt possession, transition and offensive zone effectiveness. As long as they are responsible defensively and have high compete levels, it's a net upgrade. Unlike Marner & Matthews, I think Z & CC have that killer instinct and desire to win in them

Remember how different CC looked the year after the playoffs under DD, until MSL arrived?

Playing in a losing environment with poor coaching leadership can sap and diminish the competitive spirit of most athletes, especially over an extended period. Z's attitude and effort through the ducks quagmire and coaching black hole is a positive indicator imo.

If he stays in Anh, under Q, I bet we'll see a resurgence similar or more pronounced to what we saw in CC that year. The two of them share a very intense competitive mindset, one has had the benefit of being in a far better environment the past few seasons.

Indeed.

Florida took a risk on Bennett, who had very similar flags and far less demonstrated talent and impact.

Ditto Forsling, Mikola, Verhaeghe and to a certain degree, Reinhart.

Florida became Florida precisely because they filtered the noise and bet on some good "reclamation" projects... Buying low and riding high on the ROI. Z represents that type of bet imo. If he was a sure thing to explode into the top tier first line forward he has the potential to be, he wouldn't be a realistic target without a massive trade cost.
Man I appreciate your perspective but I just don't see it with Zegras. Even if he did work out, id still feel uncomfortable with our overall size & makeup.

I will say this tho. If we could offload Laine, id be ok with rolling the dice with Zegras for 1 year. His floor can't be worse lol. If he does well & his value goes up, id then want to use him as a trade asset & hopefully get an even better long term fit.

You might be right. I think you should start a thread listing all the topics that are appropriate to talk about on a Habs forum and all the topics that should be avoided. That might help people like me who just like to decide for myself avoid embarrassing you.
Well it's a trade discussion, so the trade thread would seem like a logical choice for anyone who can read, no ?

I was bullish on Kotkianemi long after many others rightfully predicted he'd plateaued... I could be wrong on Z. In predicting what early 20's high talent/potential players will "figure it out" vs which will "flame out", no one bats 1.000.

Both Q arriving in Anaheim & the KH/MSL personal insight on the player are part of my bullish take on him for next season if he stays there or lands here.... If he got moved to another dumpster fire or dinosaur coach, I'd probably temper my confidence a bit

Fully agree on Laine... If we landed Z, I'd love to see us find a way to swap Laine out for a middle 6 player (C or W) with more physicality to their game.

Or he could just not click on the thread he doesn't like, rather than posting in it which only helps keep it on the main page...

Such a Rookie move lol

Both are unknowns. Laine produced even though he was never healthy. The question is what will he look like if he is 100% to start the season and can he stay relatively healthy. Zegras was doing well at the end of the season where the games didn't matter. Can he continue that this season.
Exactly what we need, another unknown to try to be 2C. Maybe third time is the charm

If they are looking for a long term solution to their top 6, I sure hope they are aiming higher than this.
But think of the Bell Centre exploding the one time he successfully pulls off a Michigan

Just don’t think of the media when he does nothing for 30 straight games

Come on guys, remember that time he flipped the puck over the net and Milano batted it in?

NHL HQs were so impressed they called the on-ice officials to award 3 goals on the play for degree of difficulty and style points, I mean who doesn’t want that advantage in our lineup?

Because he actually regularly contributes to the team's success. The other is more flash than substance.

So Bedard would be a no-go for you?

the ducks have been a dumpster fire every year Zegras has played there. His one other pro stop, 17 games in the AHL his rookie season, he was a dominant force on the best team in the league... And he was MVP of the WJC that US won gold at (with CC)... Maybe, just maybe, his teams struggles aren't on his shoulders not unlike other 24 year olds who played on terrible teams in their first few seasons (like fellow '19 1st rounder Seider, who also hasn't had any team success).

You like Zegras, good for you. I don't. He doesn't scream playoff warrior to me, more like frilly ballerina.
If he ever would come to the Habs and prove me wrong, great! But I just don't see him being an important piece to a Cup contender.

Sure. Plenty of posters on this site have similarly ungrounded takes about Hutson & CC. Was just curious to me that a poster with a Hutson profile pic doesn't recognize that skilled players that don't play a physical style of game absolutely can be important contributors to winning teams... But you do you

Weird that is your takeaway from what I said but absolutely, such players can be important contributors but they also have to have that dog in them nonetheless. Hutson and Caufield "n'ont pas froid aux yeux" and are very likely to continue being important contributors, thus the playoff warrior appellation. Zegras doesn't seem to have the character for it. I see him being a perimeter player in the playoffs like a Marner... but less skilled, thus the frilly ballerina appellation. No need for that type of player..

Sidebar...

As I was checking out Zegras AHL history I ran across Guhles older brother Brendan Guhle. This looks like the classic 5 year younger brother trying to surpass the older brother...and successful at it. Both are defenseman but obviously not the same caliber.

And since he hasn't been in the playoffs there is NO way to know.

Zegras & CC had very similar compete levels as they arrived into the NHL. One got MSL & an organization putting together a best in class athlete- centric development program 1/2 way into his rookie season (a rookie season that had him looking AHL bound despite the promising playoff showing a few months earlier).... The other got Eakins then Cronin.

Context matters.

We'll see what happens in the next year or two. If Z stays in Anaheim and can't figure it out under Q, that'll be telling.
