Is perpetual mediocrity any more successful?

The Leafs tanked for Matthews and now get bounced from the playoffs early every season.

Seems like most teams in the league really have no more claim to success than say, the Habs...who were at least able to grab opportunity when it came knocking and ride the wave to the SC Finals a few years back.
Since tanking for Matthews, the Leafs have won more combined regular season and playoff games than all but 5 teams. Matthews has 3 Rockets, a Hart, Calder and a Ted Linsey. I’d say tanking for Matthews is working out well for them so far.

Yup. Tanking works if it’s in the right draft year, and the club wins the lottery. Oilers and Leafs both won their tanks. The irony is Eichel led his club (Vegas was somehow able to steal him from Buffalo) to the Cup. McDavid and Matthews? No Cups.

Now that the league has 32 teams, more playoff spots are needed. The NFL has already made this adjustment with 32 teams. The NBA has 30 teams and created something unique with 4 team playoff playing for the 8th seed.

The NHL needs to get their head out of sand and create more spots to generate more excitement. This will help the Detroits and Buffalo's, ect...and their fan bases.

Easy answer.

Run 32 team playoff. 1 plays 32, 2 plays 31...etc. Adds extra playoff round and generates significantly more playoff money...both for teams and the league.

If they expanded from 16 to 20 teams, Buffalo would still find a way to miss the playoffs.

20 i think can be a good number especially since they want to bring more expansion teams. But there would have to be a bye week for the top 4 in all divisions for that to work. I would not hate it honestly.

If they eliminate preseason and half of training camp (Which I think should be a consideration) it's doable. Imo.

You left out the 3 other 20+ point scorers, Pietrangelo & Theodore and the playoff league leading goalie with a .932 %.

The Twilight Zone
its probably not en vogue right now to shit on the Blue Jackets - so ill bite my tongue

From a couple games I've seen, CBJ isn't that bad this year. Wouldn't be shocking if they're picking in the 6-10 range instead of 1-5 by the end. There's several teams that look noticeably worse.
