The 2026 NHL Off-Season Thread: More Fools And Their Cap Space, Soon Parted

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
Updated puckpedia:

If Buffalo signs Benson, Malenstyn, and Krebs to their AFP projections, and start Danforth in Rochester, they're at 15-6-3 and $9.36M in cap space available. Using these lines for accounting purposes only, based off last season:

Krebs - Norris - Thompson
Benson - Ostlund - Doan
Zucker - Helenius - Quinn
Malenstyn - McLeod - Carrick
x Kulich, Kozak

Samuelsson - Dahlin
Power - Timmins
Metsa - Crevier

UPL, Lyon, Ellis

A forward-for-defense swap fixes it (Quinn for Spence+?). Loads of room to add free agents as well.

Wrong thread.

And find a different dman than Spence

Why?

His metrics last season in 21 minutes of playing time indicate he's a top 4 defender. He had the best possession metrics of any non-Hurricanes player in the playoffs. He's got potential to develop into Spurgeon.

We just traded for a NBA sized defenseman to go along with and already large defense. Spence is worth a try.

Why is Ottawa moving him?

Because he isn't a top 4 guy.

He is too small

Read their off-season thread. Ottawa fans have no issues with his height.

Ottawa is after goal scorers. They'd go for Quinn in exchange for Spence because they don't have a single winger who is a goal scorer. They can sign a RHD (they are talking about options) to augment Zub on the right side, assuming Yakemchuk is up next season as well.

They have Batherson and now Eklund

That’s like saying the Sabres are good on the wing scoring with Tuch and a 23 year old wing billed as a playmaker (which has proven true) and who never topped 15 goals.

That’s why they want a scorer.

You're forgetting we just lost Tuch and you want to trade Quinn.
