Sharks are just toying with the rest of the league at this point.

Stenberg gives them an embarrassment of riches up front. It's like the rich kid from your school winning the lottery over the poor kid who eats granola bars for lunch every day.

If the Sharks take Stenberg because they know they can get a dman at #9, they should know… they’re not getting Chase Reid, Carson Carels, or Keaton Verhoeff at #9. Best dman available there will be a tier below.

I don't think it's a stretch to think one of those 3 will be available at 9.

All it would take is belchetz Lawrence or Rudolph to sneak into the top 8.

I don't think Grier is done. Parlaying their picks and some more assets into Zach Werenski might be the play here. If that happens, SJS is has well and truly completed its rebuild.

Not worried about a Biuim and Reid fit. They wouldn't be on the same 5v5 pairing. DFD LD are the cheapest D to acquire if necessary. PP nothing stopping you from running 2D.

Werenski to would be interesting but who replaces Eklund?

Can you list all the teams that run a 2D pp this year? Or the last 5 years even?

Buffalo fan here wondering if Vancouver makes the pick how will it go?

1. McKenna
2. Stenberg
3. Reid?

With Reid, Malholtra and Bjorck on the board it feels like getting a 1D should be a top priority for the Canucks?

Shouldn’t that be a function of the players on your roster? If Buium (LD) and Reid (RD) are better options that whatever forwards we’ve accumulated by then, why wouldn’t it work? Teams ran 2 D on the point for decades then switched in the last 10 years, but I think it’s because most teams realized their 4th most talented F was better than their 2nd most talented D. But that isn’t a hard and fast rule.

Sure, but there should then still be some teams doing it, if it’s easy enough to have two guys capable. It’s just not. I believe there is now more teams running 5 forwards.

Sure, it’s a trend but I don’t understand why it’s a hard and fast rule. Is there an intrinsic advantage to it being 4 F 1D vs 3F 2D? Assuming your best 5 players includes 2 D, why wouldn’t you do it? Because other teams don’t?

Not being argumentative, just looking for something more than “everyone else does it that way.”

No I am saying having 2 D that can do it is near impossible. Partially because they need to be developed for this.

I mean a bunch were outplaying 1st tound rated guys this year in tournies.
A note that in the mock drafts for next year there is 13-17 centers in the top 20. There is basically just Dupont on defense and a few wingers.
That may be the case now but you shouldn't just assume that will still be the case a year from now. A year ago people thought guys like Roobroeck and Lawrence would be top 5 picks and Preston a top 10 pick based on the impressive numbers they posted in their D-1 year.

Assuming they can just get a good centre later on is how we wound up in this current predicament, and they may end up passing on the only high-end C in the draft because of his dad

Huh? Reid and Buium have been running PP’s their entire hockey lives. What would they have to be “developed” for?

And even if that were true, then “develop them” I guess. We certainly have the years to do it.

Sounds like it's between Malhotra/Reid

I think the best we can hope for is DeBrusk, EP, and maybe some lesser pieces (Hoglander, DOC) to be traded.
I would be very surprised if Boeser, Hronek, and Demko aren't in training camp.

Viggo Bjorck?

At this point I would be shocked if we don’t draft Malhotra, being that SJ clearly is going to be drafting Stenberg now. The American angst will be probably drive their decision not to pick Reid. Carels is no go for me with Buium and D-Pete on the left side unless we trade Buium. The only potential for a non-Malhotra selection would be going with centre Bjorck or RS D-man Verhoeff.

I have a sneaking suspicion the pick is going to be Viggo Bjorck. I wouldn't be shocked if he's higher on their board than many realize.

Assuming McKenna goes to the Leafs and Stenberg to the Sharks, plus if there is any truth that the Malhotra camp truly wanting Caleb to chart his own course, I can see it. I'm also not too worried about the American aspect when it comes to Chase Reid and would take him over both Carels/Verhoeff. I don't think it's an issue for Vancouver regardless of the Hughes situation but people love to panic so c'est la vie.....

While I'd admittedly agree the realistic scenario is Chase Reid, the Viggo path screams Sedin IQ stamp move but what do I know.... haha

Doesn't hurt we've already drafted his brother.

That would make our return for the Hughes trade look….not good imo

Werenski also has two years left on his contract so quite comparable to the Hughes deal.
Hughes' return is what I based it on.

2OA = Buium
9OA + Musty = Rossi
27OA = Ohgren
2027 1st = Minny 1st

... but all a bit inflated because of the current market.

i think if buium was eligible for this year's draft he'd be in the conversation for top 3, so the trade is actually pretty comparable (with the added bonus of everybody being roughly along where you'd expect, developmentally, for picks at those ranges)
