The 2025 Draft Thread

I'm going to be honest, nobody in this draft is worth tanking for. Not even a game.

NOW.....tanking to rid ourselves of the least qualified GM in major professional sports? That's worthwile.
I get that, next year is the year to tank. I am not advocating for Buffalo to tank next year but McKenna is generational. We were out of the playoffs and picking 3-4 I would rather have stayed there and taken Hagens or Misa then go on a meaningless winning streak and pick O'Brien or Mrtka

I wouldn't call that tanking. It was the draft position when we were officially out of the playoffs. Just an observation.

Since we are picking 8-10 I would rather trade back or trade the pick completely and get a roster player that will contribute now.

Trade back and try to get a top 4RHD. I would much rather have a roster player now than wait 3-4 years for a player to contribute. If anytime was the time to trade the pick for help it seems like now would be a good time.

So sad that Buffalo played themselves out of a top prospect. After that its tier 3 prospects.

If we fall back that far I would trade back to around 15th and take Aitcheson. We could probably trade back get a roster player or at least a 2nd round pick and get Aitcheson.
The thing is, trading back, especially in the top-10, almost never happens in the NHL.

There is what happens and there is what you want to happen. I am posting what I want to happen.

Doesn't mean it can or will. Every time someone posts a trade its never gonna happen but people still post them.

That being said 1st round picks are traded for players every year.

FWIW, I like a few guys just as well as some of the guys on that list.

ok, but as I posted a while ago, the only way to ensure a top 3 pick is to finish dead last. And because lottery odds are so bad, finishing 3rd to last, the overwhelming likelihood is that you pick 4th or 5th. On top of that, the Predators have won one game since the trade deadline. We were never even going to “catch” them. So the “best” we could have hoped for is to finish 4th to last, which would have very likely meant picking 5th or 6th. The drop from that pick to 10th or 11th is not worth what you’d have to do to get there.

and we could still be picking 1st overall so thats something. Its only a 5% chance but its still a chance.

I swear if we draft 8th... I'm done. I will be actively cheering them to lose out. Winning meaningless games after elimination helps NObody. There's no lesson they are learning, learning how to win, grinding all 82, etc.

Just, LOSE dammit.

As Fairburn said last night in the Baker-Fairburn podcast Sabres fans have seen this finish before...

Saying that, I would at this point like to talk more about the prospects that may be there when they do pick or they might trade it "if" they get an opportunity.

If we are picking 8-10 we have enough middle tier offensive prospects. We could use defensive prospects but do we want to wait 3 years to see Jackson Smith or Mrtka make the roster?

Trade the pick for a shutdown defenseman. I am sure a 1st round pick gets you a top 4 defenseman.

A lot of teams don't have a 1st round pick and might want to get back into the first round.

Ten teams are currently without first-rounders for June, including Colorado, Dallas, Edmonton, Florida, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York Rangers, Tampa Bay, Toronto and Vegas

(I do understand its unlikely there will be a trade.)

I am a bit annoyed they went from picking #4 to #8 (or worse), but I refuse to root for losses or get upset about missing out on a prospect. No point in getting upset about it until at the very least you see that prospect you wanted make it to the NHL and be a true impact player (IMO anyway).
I’m not sure I see a player in that 4/5 range that is even worth losing for.

I also think the team imploding to end the season likely creates more problems than it solves anyway (and Adams wasn’t getting fired regardless). I think that would’ve created a worse situation for the offseason. It seemed like it was starting to reach a point where we could see key guys wanting out again. Where as now the room seems to be in much better place, mentally.

One nice thing about falling down the draft order - Adams might be more open to trading the pick for help now.

I get it. It's not like I have wanted them to lose every game since Christmas. Imploding is one thing, I agree.

But, they don't have to go on a damn heater!

It also seems like there is a top 4 or 5, or maybe 6. Then a tier drop?

Got it, yeah I thought I as being a bit generous. I suppose the 'hope' is to draft in that second tier..

Sure, I get that. It's also possible that the 2nd set shuffles a bit with late risers. There is always someone and this seems like a year akin to someone like PLD or Huberdeau coming up late in the process.

Also players are fighting for their jobs, prospects want to impress etc.Players could care less about the draft.
