Welcome to the Expanded College Football Playoff
On Friday, the first game of the Expanded College Football Playoff will take place under Touchdown Jesus in South Bend. #5 (7)Notre Dame hosts an in-state program that they never schedule - the so-called Cinderella that is #8 (10)Indiana. Nobody thought the Hoosiers would be here, but both these teams only have 1 loss. And Indiana’s is a way better loss. Curt Cignetti has designs on making Indiana a national power. A win here would go a long way, but Notre Dame is favored by 8.5. The winner will play #2 (2)Georgia in the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day.
A Big Ten team hosts a game at noon, but it will not be in Columbus. #4 (6)Penn State has passed the test so far and the faculty has given James Franklin With Honors playing #10 (11)SMU. I don’t know anyone who was talking about the Mustangs being here, but they lost the ACC Championship Game at the buzzer in their first year in the conference, but it was just enough to keep them in the mix with only two losses. Penn State is also favored here by 8.5, and the game will air on TNT. The winner goes to the Fiesta Bowl to play #9 (3)Boise State on New Year’s Eve.
ESPN ain’t got the stones to air games against the NFL, so TNT airs back to back. At 4pm, #16 (12)Clemson - the real culprit of Alabama’s misfortune - they usurped the first team out on account of winning that ACCCG and are the only team with 3 losses in the Expanded College Football Playoff. Dabo Swinney knew the assignment, but now he gets hard luck runner up of the SEC Championship Game - #3 (5)Texas. Steve Sarkesian and Quinn Ewers’ squad is the only team who made the playoff last year, no small feat in their first year in the SEC since both their losses were to the same team. Texas is favored by 10.5, and the winner goes to the Fiesta Bowl to play red hot #12 (4)Arizona.
In prime time, the action returns to ABC/ESPN MEGACAST as the folks in Columbus get their wish - a night game at home. It’s probably the least consolation to have actually made the Expanded College Football Playoff compared to their last game, when #6 (8)Ohio State lost to that team up north. A loss here seems conceivable that Ryan Day will have to sweat out an evaluation. They will welcome #7 (9)Tennessee. Josh Heupel navagated the Vols to the playoff without having to play the SECCG, and they may have more fans on hand than expected after Vols fans picked up some of the presales. Ohio State are 7.5-point favorites. The winner gets #1 (1)Oregon in the Rose Bowl, which seems like a pretty unfair draw to the only undefeated team in the field, but we’ll could be looking at a rematch from earlier in the season if the favorites win.
