The 2024-2025 Roster Thread

It's honestly as simple as this: the Sabres have the single worst coaching staff in the entire league and no amount of player movement is likely to overcome that fact.
Who's your ideal staff that would get this group to the playoffs?

The entire Rochester staff would likely be a significant improvement. At this point I would accept getting rid of several of the horribly incompetent assistants and hoping they can cover for Lindy's deficiencies at this point. Really my overall advice would be to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the roster and hire guys as coaches whose style matches up with it.

I don’t feel like any of those RHD are all that promising. They’re all long shots. Still a pretty big hole when you look at quality instead of quantity.

Aitcheson is far too risky for me at the 8/9 spot, there’s no way I’d do that, and I haven’t seen one scout rank him anywhere near that high so I probably don’t have anything to worry about.
If there was a time to trade a 1st round pick in the draft for a top 4 defenseman this is the time.

This team needs a playoffs. You can get a great 3-4 defender with the 10th overall.

Why wait 3-4 years in the draft for one. Tage will be 31 when that prospect contributes.

Its now or never.

Name one RHD who is on the trade block.

You can’t just go to a store and buy a defenseman with your draft pick just because it’s high. You have to first identify a good player that a team is willing to part with. Almost every single team could use another RHD, and zero teams have extra that they can afford to lose.

Any trade would totally screw over any team who isn’t rebuilding, and there’s only two teams doing a true rebuild. So if the player you want isn’t on San Jose or Chicago, he’s not available for a draft pick.

Why would a poster know who is on the trade block? Its such a stupid question.

Did you know Norris was on the trade block?
Did you know Stankoven was on the trade block?
Did you know Soucy was on the trade block?

I could list 100 players the last 5 years no one knew was on the trade block does that mean they weren't going to be traded? Of course not because they were traded. I should know who is available for trade when the NHL pundits don't even know.

Any team that gets beat out in the first round might make a knee jerk reaction, any time that overpays for a free agent and wants to make cap space might make a trade. But since I don't know who is on the block its not possible???

Target rebuilding or retooling teams with a good D with minimal years remaining. If NSH enters rebuild for example, what's the point of keeping Josi? Dude will retire before they are good. Boston is retooling, if they look like shit again, they could be bad until McAvoy and Pasta need a new deal. Sometimes you have to make someone available with a great offer.

Michael Peca and Granato sound like good assistants....oh wait, never mind. How about Miller as goalie coach, Okposo, and Pominville.

The problem is that those teams are doing a full rebuild. Boston and Nashville. They’ve already traded away most of the players of value who they aren’t keeping.

They’re going to keep their quality vets help develop their kids. Which has been reported. Josi, Pasta, McAvoy ain’t going anywhere until the year before their contracts are up at the earliest.

Peterka isn't going anywhere according to Adams, but plenty of smoke around. No one is available until they are. Some are just less realistic. Certainly not implying its likely.

Cale Fleury any good? RHD 6'1" but not much at all in the counting stats.

He is on waivers so no cost to see what he is.

Just annoying that people spend 90% of their time on here talking about things that have a 1% chance of happening, like trading our 1st.

Trading Peterka is much, much more likely, especially if he isn’t happy. A #9OA pick doesn’t get unhappy, especially before he’s picked.

He’s been a scout for two seasons I think. Not exactly a great resume.

He also wouldn’t take a job he’s not qualified for, unlike Adams. He’s said as much in his interviews with Rivet.

I appreciate that as a guest on podcasts and interviews that hosts always praise him about his level of preparation.

I just don’t see breaking him in at the NHL level for coaching as a path forward. I’m curious if he’s going to the NCAA following the volunteer assistant to pay assistant to head coach path.

Yeah, that's fair. It was more of a "wishes were wings" kinda thing, like Granato coming back as an Assistant. I do think Vanek will eventually coach at the collegiate or AHL level, though. He's got a really good head for the game, from what I've heard.

I saw this discussion earlier and was thinking that we should break it out as a general coaching thread kind of like the goaltending thread. I think if they’re looking for an experienced assistant, they should be knocking on Jay McKee’s door, sleeping on his front steps so they are the first thing he sees in the morning, and cleaning up after his dog in the backyard so he doesn’t have to. Whatever it takes man, whatever it takes.

Yes, if he was going to become a coach, he’d do it the right way. Not by convincing a billionaire owner/fan that he’s ready for the job before he actually is.
