The 2024-2025 Roster Thread

There's no way id trade JJ. Kid improves every year..he'll be a 70 pt scorer next season.

Tage
JJ
Benson
Levi
Dahlin
Power

would be my only untouchables

the idea that this team has any uncouchables is why this team does nothing.

Even the fans give this team free passes from doing what is right

You did, you imply that somehow we need UPL and even though Reimer has played better UPL is a better solution than Reimer and another goalie. Even with Reimer at 38 I will take him and another goalie over UPL as the starter.

UPL hasn't looked the greatest recently? or all season? I posted his stats on my original post and they are awful.

UPL's save percentage is like .885 and his GAA is 3.23

No goalie should be starting in the NHL with those stats.

UPL is ranked 53rd out of 57 in GAA and 51st out of 57th in save percentage. Reimer ranks 28th for Goals Saved Above expected. UPL ranks 50th.

Move on if we can get a sucker to take him

You can see all the stats here. UPL is at the bottom 10% of every stat.

The worst seasons of Kari Lehtonen's, Antti Niemi's, and MacKenzie Blackwood's careers, were playing for Lindy Ruff.

Ruff has had two seasons better than DeLuca .500 in his last 10 seasons as a head coach (I omitted the year he was fired from the Sabres). His teams missed the playoffs in 7 of those seasons. On average in those 7 seasons, his teams finished 26th in GAA.

UPL's season has gone from ok, to bad, to disastrous. He needs to be better. But Lindy Ruff is hard on goalies; he just is. Ruff is not the coach you hire to bring structure and accountability to your team. He's the guy you hire if you want to finish near the bottom in GAA and draft in the top 10. If he wasn't a Sabre Legend, if he was Wally Raft who was good 20 years ago in St. Louis, no Sabre fan would have seen him as a good hire. Ruff is a disaster.

We'll never get better by trading away our only good players. The rest of the league doesn't trade away their good players, and if they try and acquire our good players it will only be for picks, prospects, or damaged goods.

NHL teams don't trade away good players, they find a way to build around them.

Thinkjng forward to next year’s roster, I’m wondering - has Krebs been healthy scratched at all this season? Many thought he’d be the 13th fwd but I guess he ended up being a low-usage staple on a losing team. I wonder what that says about next season.

IIRC, the only game he was scratched was the opener in Prague.

So?

Boston has Dahlin's BFF. Does that mean the Sabres are trading Ras to the Bruins?
First off, it was just an example of a type of player that we would trade JJ for and the type we need.

Second, Dahlin wasn’t crying when his buddy was best bud was traded - that was Brady.

Third, and most relevantly, I don’t actually think the Sabres are going to get him but he and his brother are basically Captain America from tge 4 nations and I could very easily see him requesting a trade to an American team because he basically is the face of the American team and current US ethos without getting too political… Seems like he might actually want to be in the states.

So it’s not that crazy but also take a chill pill. It wasn’t really meant to be like he would demand a trade to the Sabres… I just think he wouldn’t reject it especially if you did want to be traded to a team in the states.

If Brady tries to force a trade out of Ottawa, I think getting to a legit Cup contender would be what he is looking for and not merely playing south of the border and/or with Josh Norris.

Yea but who is the two way impact forward JJ is traded for? I dont know that there is a large list. That player cant be over 8 million a season, and has to be available from another team. The one I was thinking is Gabe Vilardi. The Jets are losing Ehlers, they may give up some two way center play for that offensive potential on the wing...

With that said, I just dont see much out there that doesn't come with quite the question mark associated (injuries, production, contract)
Rossi is potentially available and MIN loves Peterka apparently.

Given how well Rossi has finished out the season, I would be surprised if Minnesota moves him.

Plus, Minnesota is getting a $12M reduction in the buyout dead cap for Suter and Parise from this season to next season.

Plus, Rossi is the only RFA they have this season who is likely to get a healthy raise and they don't have any real big money UFAs that they might try and keep.

Guerin is likely to be active this summer.

A defenseman playing 22 minutes for the team with the most points in the NHL is akin to Joki or Clifton?
I had your same reaction. Pionk has been a very solid top 4 D for the Jets for over 5 years who plays all situations. He would fit in VERY nicely with Byram to make a rock solid second pair.
Maybe I was too harsh on Pionk. But he's had a sub 50% xGF% with his primary partner in 4 of the last 5 years. This year is the first year he's had a positive xGF% in his primary pairing and it seems like Samberg is dragging him there. Feels similar to Dahlin dragging Joki to a positive xGF% in their pairing.

I don't disagree, but the rumor came from somewhere.

I see people writing up lines for next year but without prospects....

Any chance Ostlund is on the team next year or needs another year in the AHL?
Is Ryan Johnson going to get a shot next year or do people see him traded next year?
Will Rosen be here full time next year or is his window closing?

Who do people see breaking through next year thats not here now? What about the Russians Nuechev and Komarov?

it's really a shame but there's no to.for Rosen or Ostlund u less they ship somebody out from this list:
Not happening:
Tage
Kulich
Probably not happening:
McLeod
Norris
Tuch
Zucker
Greenway
Quinn
Might happen but shouldn't:
Peterka

That's a bad top 9 filled with players this FO doesn't have the balls to move.

Quinn being on the starting night roster seems impossible to me. The org doesn’t like him, and fans don’t like him. I think they’d ship him out for a 2026 2nd round pick at this point.

But aside from Quinn, that’s a good point - they will probably only make one move at forward this offseason. I think they’ll keep Peterka.

And then one or more on defense.

How do you trade Tage Thompson and make the Sabres better? You can do it and make them better in the future (possibly), but you almost certainly can't make the better right now.
Depends on the quality of scouts, depends on the eye for talent you have in management, and depends on the quality of coaches in your coaching staff. Is there a possibility of trading Tage, and making the team better? Absolutely. With this current coaching staff and management team the chances of them accomplishing this, is pretty low.

I'd be perfectly fine trading Tage away for a more rounded package of players/prospects, with a lesser ceiling, but a higher floor. A much more balanced roster that can play a 200' game I feel will lead to a more consistent team and maintained success. Right now, the Sabres high end talent potential is right up there with other teams. But there are flaws in their overall games that are just stopping them from being successful.

I find Pionk has been a very solid Top 4 D for 5 years, and is still under 30. I'd be more comfortable with him in the defense than anyone not named Dahlin.

For me, that's worth the overpay.

The only top end talent is Tage the rest are just 2nd and 3rd line players. The team is lacking top end talent and too much bottom 6.

Pray his line keeps shooting 30% and the scouts ignore the giveaways still leading to goals against and we might get something
