The 2024-2025 Roster Thread

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

If he wants out, he sits through the summer with an offer on the table to sign the whole time. If we get to the preseason and he is still holding out? Then we evaluate.
Yeah it's time to start playing hardball stop rewarding players who quit on the team. Look at Myles Garrett anything is possible and JJ should stay a Sabre.

I'M all for trading Peterka at this rate. He isn't gonna fix this team. Key word though was I'M. I dont trust Kevyn to do it. Not interested in the headline "Kevyn Adams trades Peterka for Aron Rodgers".
Peterka is one of 4 impact players on this team offensively

Dahlin
Thompson
Tuch
Peterka

You don’t trade that talent. You try to retain them

Training camp is literally the worst time you could possibly pick to decide to trade someone.

If he wants a trade you basically have to start looking for a partner as soon as the playoffs are over. Personally, I’d try to over pay him to get him to stay. He’s apparently Terry’s favorite player so I’m sure that’s being considered.

If they offer an overpay and Peterka still doesn’t sign, I’m not sure what you do at that point. Play chicken with him as the season starts, or sell low to one of the few teams with cap to spare?

“He offers nothing defensively”

Hard to believe a 20 year old thrust into immediate top six duty for three years hasn’t developed into a defensive powerhouse.

But I bet you anything when he’s 26 no one will ever say that about him again…wherever we traded him to for less than he will be.

There’s a sick pattern here of throwing kids in to punch above their weight…turning on them when they aren’t perfect immediately…even when they’re positive players (IE not whatever the f*** Cozens was doing the last two years or Quinn after his injury)…and starting all over again.

Benson better crack that offense soon or he’ll be next on the hit list. I know you’re thinking…no…Benson is clearly a good player. Well…that’s what people said the last two years about JJ. But here we are. He’s not perfect yet. Kill him.

Of course, these problems don’t exist on real teams with pro players who can play the game around the kids you throw to the wolves. Spoiler…players don’t leave Buffalo and get good. Players leave Buffalo and skate on real teams.

Good teams win with players in the roles that maximize their strengths and account for their weaknesses. JJP is a type of player that exists on a good team as-is, and he has time to grow

Kind of praying we lock down Benson before the offensive breakout.

But we'll probably decide to put him with our best players in a contract year

How are we feeling about Mcleod resigned at 4 years, 4.5M? I've tried to find a comparable deal, closest I got was Yegor Sharagovich who signed 5 years 5.5 this past offseason with 31 goals scored.

Also - JJP should not be traded for any reason. He is the best young player on the team by a mile and has legit PPG potential.
100% take the deal. Prefer 3.5. His goals are not sustainable. 21% shooting is not sustainable.

I wonder when people are going to realize that "insiders" and bloggers are going to take advantage of the Sabres situation and come up with juicy stories about certain players wanting out or certain players are "on their way out" ... Content is needed to feed the masses.

Trading Peterka would be silly now unless it is an offer too good to say no to. Trading Quinn would be silly now considering you wouldn't get much for him relative to what this guy most likely ends up becoming.

What they should do is send Benson down to Rochester next year.. bring in a legit top 6... replace Krebs with either Kozak or outside help....and then get to work on D and I wouldn't close the door on upgrading UPL or getting a goalie that they will play more than once every 10 to 12 games.

The problem with me for Quinn is that keeping him on the roster is silly, too.

I am not optimistic that he can stay healthy and make a jump in production. So, if you can't count on him being the impactful top 6 winger you hoped they were getting, what is he bringing to the table?

Quinn & Samuelsson are guys that I would not shed a tear if they are moved this offseason and they add solid veterans to replace them. I don't care about "selling low." I care about making the roster markedly better.

Well don't go into the season expecting him to be a top 6 player... all he needs to do is get back to what he was his rookie season and how he played in his limited time last season and he will be a good depth scoring option on 3rd line who can also be a depth penalty killer. Not caring about selling low on a player with the potential that Quinn has is a rather short sighted view on things.
I may not put my faith in him as a top 6 next year...but I will easily be willing to bet that he comes back next year and be an integral part of 3rd line.

With Greenway coming back, I doubt Quinn is a better 3rd line RW option than Greenway is next season.

And yes, after 14 years out of the playoffs and Adams being too patient with his build, I think they need more shortsighted decisions being made. Hoping that kids work out this year is not the path they should continue down, IMO.

Samuelsson has been disappointing but I won't have an issue keeping him. Take his letter away and give it to Zucker and also ease up on the usage.

He's not good enough to cover for whatever our forwards are doing, whether ability or coaching, but when separated from the prime offenders his numbers are actually decent.

Away from Cozens and malenstyn,he still got twice as many d zone starts as offensive, but was on the ice for 23 sabres goals and 15 opposition goals. Positive high danger chance differential too. I don't even hate malenstyn but our 4th line has been a Frankenstein mess, and the more minutes with them will kill anyone

Round out the forward group so that entire lines aren't liabilities, and I'll take a 4M dollar guy that has qualities most of our defenseman lack

We have 4 more years of team control. Peterka has very little leverage.

Just give him his QO and negotiate a deal. If he doesn’t want a long term deal, then offer a 2 or 3 year bridge deal. If he doesn’t want that, then offer a 1yr deal above his QO. If he still doesn’t want to sign that, then tell him its his QO or nothing and let him sit if he wont take that.
