For me... there are only a couple of key moves to help the Sabres a playoff team if you believe in Kulich and Norris. Is Ostland ready? STILL need a RHD and Goalie. Hypothetical roster....

Kulich - Norris - Tage
Zucker - McLeod - Tuch
Greenway - Ostland - Benson
Malenstyn - Krebs - Lafferty

Dahlin - Byram
Power - Schneider
Bryson - Clifton

Demko
Vet

Sure, draft Hagens or O'Brien as future C but they can marinate. See ya in 2026/27
Let's assume Norris is healthy... LOL Doubt we can land EP40.
Is Ostland ready for 3rd line minutes? Looks great in Rochester.
I traded JJP + to the Rangers to get Schneider
Traded UPL ++ for Demko / or 1A Vet
Quinn can be a ++ out the door.
RE: Demko - Blackwood had all kinds of injuries and is now thriving in Colorado
Doubt we can attract an Ehlers / Pionk maybe Fabro
Team look like that now. I think they need trade for a very good top 6 c and D.

Peterka Norris Thompson
Zucker McLeod Tuch
Benson Kulich Quinn
Malenstyn Krebs Greenway
Lafferty

Samuelsson Dahlin
Power Byram
Clifton Docker
Bryson

Luukk

Schneider could be a good trade but not for Peterka

A sliver of hope among the dark clouds are the young centers.

Ostlund projects as a 1 or 2C and should get a look soon. Helenius needs more time in Rochester but looks promising. Kozak looks like an all-effort 4C.

If Buffalo could add another center in the draft, they’d have the position set for a while. It’s a smaller group, but they are high on hockey IQ. And I’ll take that trade off all day.

I really like Hagens as a pocket Crosby type of center. 200 foot game, great passer, high hockey IQ.

This could be potentially a very good center group:

Ostlund: top of the roster center who makes everyone better. Backstrom type of player.
Hagens: 200 foot game, great passer, makes wingers better
Helenius: mini-Lundell who plays with pace and IQ.
Kozak: all effort, Bruins style 4C.

Obviously won’t happen this way completely, but as a mental starting point for roster construction, it’s pretty good.

There is...hope. We have some good players. If Norris can get at least 60-65 games in next year, we have a big defensive upgrade from Cozens. McLeod has been great, albeit regression in goals is likely. Greenway probably belongs on 4th line with Beck and Kozak. If Tage is staying on wing, I would like to see them big game hunt for a second top 6 C. I expect a bounce back from Quinn. JBD and Brannstrom could be solid additions to the NHL squad. Ostlund could push but I'd rather him be the injury fill in down the middle. Power is at least showing flashes again. Idk what happens with Byram and Peterka, but our D-zone coverage will be better if they are swapped out. Kulich hopefully can find a more consistent offensive production. Even a 5 place jump in PP and PK would be a huge upgrade next season.

I don't know what to say if you think UPL/goaltending is our #1 issue. Seems like stat watching more than game-watching.

The team defense is back to its tricks from 2 years ago -- constantly allowing cross-ice passes, never tying up guys in front of the net, etc etc.

UPL proved last year that if the defense keeps high-danger chances down, he'll give the team a chance to win every night. This year, there are FAR FAR more "no chance" goals that are being allowed.
No. It's the goaltending. There's .01 difference between this season and last season in xGA/60 at both 5v5 and all strenghts, but there's a -.55 swing in all strengths GA/60 and -.38 at 5v5.

There was also only a .08 difference in all strengths xGA/60 between 2022-23 and 2023-24. Yet the GA/60 improved by .64. That's goaltending.

They remain one of the worst teams at odd-man rushes and cross-seam passes in the entire league from what the Clear Site guys have mentioned. They were better last year. It's not just goaltending - this team is atrocious at team defense.

I'm somewhat barely following still by reading odd articles here and there. I admit I haven't watched a game since sometime in November. I've read Dahlin debunking rumors of him asking out but I just read Quinn has missed practice and Peterka is unhappy. I also think it was mentioned that Cozens was a headcase, I'm not sure if I read that officially or was mentioned by someone assuming on here.

Do we have a revolt going on with the kids? What's going on and are we going to be moving around more chairs this summer?

I don't think it's a revolt in the sense of team Jack vs team Old Guys dividing the lockerroom. More the kids are frustrated because they want to be and/or want the team to be better and kinda don't know how to fix it themselves (hence Dahlin meeting with Adams that got misreported as Dahlin wanting out), and Quinn might be kind of lazy lol.

Hopefully Samuelsson is gone next year. Had enough of him. Resign Reimer unless Levi is here full-time?

Can you share those stats for the last 3 years?

According to NST we're giving up fewer high danger shot attempts than last year. But save % is 5% lower than last year on high danger shots and 4% lower than 2 years ago. But we're also giving up fewer high danger goals per 60 now than in 2022-23 despite the save % being 4% worse.

Are we really giving up fewer chances, but the chances we do give up are that much juicer than 2022-23 that it caused save% to drop 4%?

My eye says abso-freaking-lutely.

Look, I'm not saying UPL in particular hasn't been disappointing -- he has. He's failed to make quite a few routine saves that he made last year.

A 4% drop in save percentage equates to 1 more goal every 25 shots....almost 1 goal per game. Are we allowing 1 more "no earthly chance the goalie stops that" goals per game? Sure seems like it to me.

@koteka you mentioned Columbus needs to address their defence, perhaps Sabres would be a good trading partner at the draft ?

The Blue Jackets’ best defensemen are on the left side. Werenski is the now. Mateychuk is the future. We will likely lose Provorov in free agency which is perfectly fine. Severson is paid too much and his contract is too long, so we would love to trade him. He is generally ok and can make beautiful passes, but he makes too many stupid plays leading to odd man rushes against. Fabbro was a great waiver pick up this season, and he has paired well with Werenski, but the fact he hasn’t signed a contract yet makes it seem like he wants to be a free agent. Our 1st round draft picks on the right side (Ceulemans, Jiricek) have not been good. In the minors we have several guys who look like 3rd pair left D. What Columbus really needs is a fairly big and tough solidly defensive defenseman or two on the right side.

I currently do not have access to their data and only have heard the mentioning it this year on pods.

All this checks out to UPL having a bad year. Forwards definitely suck defensively, but UPL has to make some saves. I am very intrigued with the idea of getting a new Goalie couch. Our goaltenders EVERY year are bipolar.

We need a subjective stat where a veteran goalie coach watches every goal allowed in the NHL and assigns a grade to it based on if proper technique, anticipation, whatever was followed by the goalie. Then we can have a number of “bad goals” allowed. Kind of like PFF for football.

Of course that misses the opposite side of the coin (saves the goalie made that probably should have gone in). But to capture that would require reviewing the film for every save, which is way more labor intensive.

Maybe we do need a new goalie couch in the room. Maybe the current one is getting old and worn down. ;)

But it's WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY past time for Bales to be shown the door.

That is basically what Clearsight tries to do.

They have all sorts of extra sort of subjective things they track for every shot beyond just location including things like was the shot off a pass across the slot line, was it a screen, was it tipped, etc.

With all those pieces of data, you have an expected Save% based off of historical data and then you have the actual Save% and the delta.

And I think they also track low danger attempts that are those "bad goals" if they go in.

How are we feeling about Mcleod resigned at 4 years, 4.5M? I've tried to find a comparable deal, closest I got was Yegor Sharagovich who signed 5 years 5.5 this past offseason with 31 goals scored.

Also - JJP should not be traded for any reason. He is the best young player on the team by a mile and has legit PPG potential.

I agree regarding JJ. But, if the kid wants out and literally refuses to resign here. We can't force him to. Maybe he is a RFA soonish?, but still.

If he wants out, he sits through the summer with an offer on the table to sign the whole time. If we get to the preseason and he is still holding out? Then we evaluate.
