Wanted to gauge a fantasy trade and didn't want to post this to main boards to create potential mess of a thread.

Just waated to inquire what is the maximum value the Sabres would pay for Matthew Knies?

My target in this fantasy scenerio would be 1 piece from each tier below:

1 NHL high pedigree player:

1) Kulich
2) Benson
3) Quinn

If you had to include one of the three in this fantasy Knies deal which would it be?

1 high quality prospect on fringe of NHL

1) Rosen
2) Ostlund
3) Helenius

1 1st round pick can be top 10 protected from

1) 2026 Draft
2) 2027 Draft
3) 2028 Draft

Now this is again mostly fantasy and I dont expect leafs-sabres to make a move and more importantly make a move of this magnitude

More so want to see how Sabre fans view their internal top 9 assets that could be available (did not include Powers, Cozens or Byram here since I wanted to see NHL trade where Sabres are buyers) and what they would value Knies.

If the above is way off base and too much, no worries can totally understand, I more so want to to just get some opinions without outsude voices of other teams coming in and destroying and potential discussions. Thanks

@rt did a proposal of Cozens for Crouse and Kesselring a few weeks back and it was generally considered a good, even deal.
Frank didn’t like it though. Haha.

After he was so nice to us when he was on our show! ;)

I guess we deserved it. We had Kesselring on the show and then started putting the poor guy in trade mockups. Haha.

What about simplify this and go dahlin for knives one for one?

Or would the cap not work for the leafs in this trade?

We'll just pass through here.

I don't know what Frank doesn't like about it, but I like the deal and it makes sense for me.

Is Crouse at least still playing a physical game? I'm intrigued by him. Power forwards typically take a bit longer to develop. We'd have to hope he can be a good top-9 winger here.

Well, he seems to play a physical game. I would definitely be interested in a change of scenery for him, as he had 40+ points in the last two seasons. And his current fall may be due to his move to Utah and the birth of a child, for example.

I don't think he returns 3 1st round picks of value. It'd be cheaper to offersheet him.

Quinn: My gut says something like + 1st.

Kulich: I'm not sure what I'd do if Toronto said "straight up fill or kill".

Benson: I'd swap and add something.

I'd give you Rosen/Ostlund + 1st, but not Helenius + 1st.

Knies is a good player but he's riding high on the 2nd best S% in the league. Either way I expect Toronto to keep him.

Can we convince Pittsburgh to go full rebuild and give up Rakell?

I only have access to Athletic charts but per those he's having an unreal year on both sides of the puck.

Quinn and a B prospect? Add a 2nd? Tough to value him as he's under contract for $5M for age 32, 33, and 34 seasons after this. Little better, little younger Zucker (keep him too).

Swapping out Quinn for a consistent vet like him from the beginning of this season likely has us in the playoffs race

Absolutely not IMO. We'd be trading for him at his highest value......and we don't have a Crosby or Malkin to pump up his production.

He'd immediately become public enemy #1 because his production wouldn't come close to his PIT levels.

I like Rust a lot more as an offseason target from PIT. No trade protection starting 7/1.

I’ve come full circle. Sabres should aquire a boatload of futures now. Everything that isn’t nailed down must go.
The old Regier saying,
“Picks are worth more at the draft, players more at the deadline,” has me wanting to accumulate as much capital as possible now. Roster build later (with a new GM).

Really like the idea of rakell or rust but not sure I'd give up say Quinn for them

But a base trade around Quinn to Pittsburgh would work

Same (depending on the definition of "nailed down"). Just get creative. Pretty sure Detroit has been sniffing around Cozens for awhile and they're an organization that has to be feeling the heat. Take a fair futures deal and give yourself more options during the summer to find that quality vet.

Futures only have turnaround value if one can use the picks to make other moves. Since this team hasn't shown they can do that, I don't think accumulating a bunch of near-term picks is actually worthwhile. They need to expand the bulge in their development timeline - find more players with longer signing timelines so they aren't just wasting time while waiting for all the high picks they've already tried to shoehorn into their AHL team are thinned.

Peak value for picks is when those picks are yet to be taken and then way further down the line when those players are in the NHL on ELC's. The time in between is nowhere near as much.

Agreed. The list of available veterans without trade protection is, as previously discussed, slim. And I think the list of teams that want futures for those players is even slimmer.
