If he's not extending it makes all the sense
Is there any indication that he doesn't want to sign? The only thing we know is that the Sabres want to sign him.

If he doesn't want to sign, I guess it makes sense to trade him, but a 3rd round pick is basically worthless, so I don't really care at that point.

Devils just get a good top 4 RD for 4th round. It's just that someone knows how to work.

This team is two smart trades from competing again.

1) Cozens or Byram trade for top 6 C/D
2) The other player for the remaining position.

Byram is worth a 2C, he was traded for one and has gotten better.
Cozens will need an add like a 2nd or similar.

You fix your RHD and get a true top 4 D on the right side, and you get a true top 6C to actually play correct hockey. 2nd line gets better, 2nd pairing gets better, less goals against, Power gets a steady partner.

You Keep Ostlund Konsta, Krebs, 2025, 2026 firsts to acquire another good roster player.

Feels like a no brainer to do these things.

Peterka Thompson Marner (Thompson may go back to C here at some point if Kulich can't sustain)
Quinn Cirelli Kulich
Zucker Mcleod Benson
Beck Kozak Greenway

Winger is the spot to potentially ADD as a 3rd trade or FA.

Dahlin Andersson
Power (Should be Marcus Pettersson for 2026 1st) Get a similar quality, RyJo slots in otherwise.
Clifton Samuelsson

Don't hold me to the names listed though. Cirelli> Cozens, Andersson fit>>Byram. Grab a winger in FA, let's just say Marner (pipe dream). My team is making the playoffs.

Is Samuelsson the new Cozens who was the new Skinner who was the new Mittlestadt who was the new Ristolainen who was... just another scapegoat for fans?

We haven't even gotten to the shoddy goaltending from both Levi and Luukkonen to really scapegoat to the n'th degree.

Kovacevic from Montreal for 4th.
I'd say that's probably a rare example, but like I said, trade him if we have to, but I'm not holding my breath that they'll be able to turn a 3rd round pick into a top 4 defenseman next year. The chances of that pick amounting to anything is pretty slim.

Is there a word for a scapegoat that deserves their scapegoating? Because that's what Samuelsson is.

He's a soon to be 25yo 32nd overall pick and people are saying he hasn't been given support and was thrown into the deep end. It's all a gas.
Trading Greenway makes no sense to me. You'd be trading with a playoff team as a rental, and they're going to pay in picks/prospects. Just like in a cozens trade, we want roster help now. In Greenway's case, that's Greenway. If you trade him, then you have to go find another Greenway type (D, PK, toughness, some production, not too old, etc). Keep him and build on it

There were rumblings that he'd like to explore free agency. And wouldn't you, especially reading this board's opinion of the front office and roster?

I'm as big a Greenway defender as there is and I'd like him signed. But if not, we still need futures as currency (and just as futures) even as the win-now buzz grows louder.

Well that could be an asset in the deal too, Columbus got Fabbro for free, Utah got Marino for two second picks, picks can always come in handy. There's no point in keeping Greenway if he doesn't want to sign an extension before the TDL, it's better to get an asset. If he's willing to sign an extension, just sign him.

The smart way going forward is:

Sell off your UFAs and move ahead with evaluation. See if there is a reclamation project or two out there we can use the rest of the regular season to work on.

(also bring in a real GM)

He also says that he thinks its one or the other to keep(Sammy or Byram).

If that's the case then trade Sammy. If no one wants him then you buy him out.
Yeah I read that but I was rather confused that Sammy is out for the rest of the year, I mean what kind of injury is he suffering? He also can't be buyout while he's injured.
