Losing Zucker would be a big problem if he wants to stay here. I'm OK with a 1-2 year extension and about the same salary. He's the one who makes a positive impact in the locker room, a good vet, but he also plays well and scores a lot of points. Where are you going to find another Zucker? We need a few more of those.

I think a guy like Wild Bill would be motivated in Buffalo. Rakell? He feels like the kind of player that will struggle when it comes to creating space on a hemmed in Buffalo team. My guess he reaches the apathy stage/learned helplessness in 2 weeks.
How do you know who's going to succeed and who's not. I thought Zucker was a questionable signing in the summer, but he's turned out to be the complete opposite in terms of production and personality.

Rakell has had motivation/inconsistency issues in the past. Zucker has/had always been a hard worker on and off the ice.....it just hadn't always translated into production.

I didn't know that, then it's a different matter, maybe he's not very suitable.

Not sure he's a fit at the age or for leadership but Rackell does not have a NTC. His 40 pts would lead the Sabres in scoring.

Well he has 8 teams in his M-NTC, but as said above, if he has had problems with motivation on a losing team before, then he probably isn't a good fit for us. He's having a good season, but he seems to be playing on Crosby's wing and has had weaker seasons before. Probably someone like Bjorkstrand would be a better fit, especially since there have been rumors recently that he might be available. But from Pens I'm very interested in Pettersson and being allowed to talk to him about an extension here and now.

Two thoughts - Rackell was someone vaguely hinted at a few years ago as a potential interest to Buffalo. I could see them being interested. Secondly, Marcus Pettersson is Ekholm level of good at defense. For a team that has no real stoppers now that Samuelsson has withered up into nothingness, the Sabres could/should look at someone like him with extension in mind if not in hand.

I haven't watched a game in some time.

So, this is still a team in the bottom 3 of the NHL? The GM is still here? The roster has had no change?
