Dreger on Sabres Live. Pete talks continue to happen, but contract makes it tough for team to take on and give up major assets.
"But they want players who I, Kevyn Adams, GM extaordinaire, have deemed core pieces to the perennial cup contender I've been building for 5 years. I cannot waver from my vision. Panic is not an option."

Cap space ✅
Players Vancouver reportedly wants ✅
Legit top line center coming back ✅
Money equals out ✅

Give me the team for the rest of the day. It’ll be done before bedtime.
Terry is choking on the fact that Pettersson has a $10M bonus due on 7/1/25 and makes over $14M in cash for the 25-26 season.

Good luck changing that.

I don’t feel like summarizing all of the evidence, but I’m seeing too much smoke indicating that other GMs aren’t willing to give up a ton of assets for EP, mostly because of the cap hit.

I think Adams got upset when the Cozens Byram thing got out there - Friedmann said it upset someone because the value was so lopsided and I think that may have been Adams. I don’t think Adams would ever put Byram on the table unless maybe it was closer to one-for-one, with a prospect instead of Cozens.

I’d certainly do the trade for both players, I’m just speculating about the realities of the trade market.

If Adams wants him at all at that cap hit, I think he’d be able to do it around Cozens as the main piece, since none of the other teams who can fit $11.6m can even put that caliber of center on the table with that much potential upside.

If Adams wants him, he can easily get him, and I don’t think it would cost Byram.

Exactly, also teams like NYR and Boston always find suckers to take on bloated contracts. It's annoying.

No Arizona has left the league having to be a lot smarter with contracts. At the moment it looks like there is only one big LTIRetired deal out there and it is Price from Montreal.

EP40 + Joshua + Desharnais = 16.85 million
Cozens + Power = 15.45 million

If we add Krebs.......it's damned near dollar in, dollar out.

Not interested in trading Power especially along with Cozens for a singular player with a question marks surrounding him and his GM calling him out.

Random question but do you guys think Pegula would sign off on a trade for Pettersson with how much of his contract money is due in signing bonuses? I ask because I think Buffalo probably has the most enticing pieces for Van but think that might be a hurtle

edit: mod can delete. I backread

One of the nicer things I'll say about Pegula is if he is convinced that a player actually wants to be in Buffalo, money really isn't an obstacle.

So if he somehow gets word that EP is genuinely excited and looking forward to playing with his buddy Dahlin in Buffalo......I don't think it'd be a hurdle.

So we're giving up Cozens and Peterka and something else.
This is exactly where my mind is at. Add a top 3 protected 1st and I don’t see how anyone could beat that.

Why does it need to be dollar in, dolllar out? Vancouver may appreciate the cap space, and almost definitely won’t give up both Joshua and EP anyway

Yea I definitely can’t see that. I can see EP40 + Desharnais for Cozens, Byram and like a 2nd or similar tier prospect, but that’s about it.

Although I took it as a joke about the Joshua they acquired as opposed to the NHL one.

Giving up a 1st Cozens and Peterka for Petersson would end up one of the worst feats of bumbling in Sabres history and we have quite a few to choose from.
