Cozens and Krebs better step it up or I'm calling up Kulich to play center.
100% ... I think they need to give Kulich a look in the middle at some point. He seems to have a decent IQ, plus skating that could do well in the NHL. You never know, it just could work.

What if Buffalo retains on Samuelsson? Maybe get it down to $3.5M cap hit. Would he have positive trade value at that point?
No

No
No was my initial reaction too. But retaining him to 3.5 is close to the same cap hit as buying him out, but in this case, the “penalty” is now for lesser years and you’re getting some kind of asset from the deal. Makes sense imo.

We'll just flip him over the summer to PHI for Risto

Is Bo Byram becoming a better player than Mittelstadt?
He looks good as an offensive defenseman, but our top 4 is skewed offensively because of this and we really need a more defensive top 4 D. It's a question of whether we needed this type of player or not. Also, don't forget that our second line still hasn't produced.

While Byram is playing like this, it does raise his value, and if Adams wants to balance out his defense, some team could pay a good price for a guy like Byram.

I'd say no but it's too subjective. More to the point, the Sabres have one too many offensive LHDs than they can actually maximize, while lacking any solid defensive D-men. So while that group doesn't exactly work well, there is also the problem of not having a 2nd scoring line or any top-6 depth when injuries happen. I wonder how that problem could've been avoided...???

So.500 , how long is Tage and Samuelsson out for ? I think we really should try trade for something really good now and push forward, any rumors ?
Dreger got chatty. Yesterday he said:

"Around the league when it comes to trade talk, which isn’t unusual, but one team to keep an eye on is the Sabres, who have been inconsistent so far this season. They have been engaged in more conversation than the average NHL GM."

Nothing new in principle, but the situation obliges Adams to action.

Mitts is having a breakout season, no? I think most agreed the value was fair, but the player type we acquired didn't make much sense. If they can find a steady top-4 guy, that may help, but I'm still not sure who we play Byram with. He's been bounced around between partners quite a bit. He's a good player, though. No one can deny that.

The doghouse
I still think you build around Dahlin, Byram, and Power. While similar players, all should grow into all around defensemen with huge ceilings. I don’t think any are purely offensive players in a few years. Large offensive defensmen that are still good at defense? Sure, redundant but who cares. It’s a unique three headed monster.

You just need to continue growing their defensive game. You don’t trade any of them. You give them a proper top 4 vet to play with and learn from. The fact we don’t have that is wild

Come on what? You interpret my post as advocating for Dahlin to go? That's your problem. He's not untouchable, neither is Power...doesn't mean I'm advocating for any one of them to be traded over another. The fact is that the D-corps as a whole doesn't make sense. Some level of revamp needs to happen. Go put your head back in the sand if you don't like it or can't accept it.
It’s a bad opinion

Bowen Byram has more 5v5 points than Mittelstadt

Dahlin and Power are on long-term contracts, and Byram is an RFA in the summer. I would prefer a more balanced defense, but your idea is also viable. But what kind of contract will Byram ask for and does he even want to stay in Buffalo, and we can also find out if Pegula is ready to pay.

Top 4 RD with good defense should be a priority to add, and preferably right now.

Dreger's report here should damper all expectations:

"Adams is willing to considering something bigger but he does not want to trade away any of his young talent"

I mean...it sounds like he's trying to go add players for just picks. So....expect very little if anything.
Well he trade Savoie and it worked for now. I doubt that all our more or less valuable prospects are unavailable, plus picks can also be a good idea, there are players who can probably be acquired only for pick and mid prospect.

Maybe me putting words in his mouth but I take that as not trading young guys off the current roster. Not prospects

I wonder if Strome in Anaheim might be available. Slide him in as the 2C. He's from Mississauga, 31 signed for 2 more years at 5M. Last 2 years of the deal he plays 3C or 4C.
