If pair Byram - Dahlin works, it will be very good, it is clear that they will not be perfect in defense, but they will regularly generate in attack, which will be a plus.

Let's see how long the Power - Bryson pair lasts, but if anything, finding a top 4 RD for the second pair will be easier than for the first.

Gilbert - Clifton seem to interact very well. Sammy and Joki should sit for now.

Don't play the system? Sit down and wait for an opportunity to pop up again.
That's all we wanted from coaching for the last couple of years.

Even in international sport, when “try hard” is the issue physiology becomes secondary and training the culture and mind becomes the priority.

There are a lot of international coaches with international who are amazing with Jimmys and Joes but terrible with them physiology. There’s also a lot of international coaches with Olympic who could be on the spectrum socially but are absolute physio wiz’s.

The key is finding balance and learning when to lean into the physiology vs the compete.
Compete didn't seem to be an issue last evening. That's part of why I don't buy these solutions to what ails the Sabres.

I tend to think that it is a lack of maturity thing and an injury thing that has hampered the team more than Ruff not having them practice hard enough.

I look at it more like anytime you've got people calling you for something you have that they want, you're in a good position. You can ask for the moon, and are under no obligation to do anything.

If I could get a good 2C or RD that I can have for 4+ years for Quinn, i seriously consider it.
I have a feeling that they hang up quick if Adams asks for the moon.

GMs are circling because they hope that Adams will sell low.

Overanalyzing the word a little bit. Hard, intense, competitive... if they practice at the pace they need to play, they'll play at the pace they need to win.

They need more intensity AND to focus on improving specific areas.
I do not believe it is that simple at the NHL level.

Developing professional habits outside of practice are an immense factor in NHL players showing up with not just the effort needed to win, but the sharp decision-making it takes to win on a consistent basis.

The Standard that Ruff has been preaching isn't just a practice and game thing. You can have Ruff pushing for effort in practice and have it not be enough if the guys are not professionals the other 20+ hours of the day.

That is part of the growing pains that comes with consistently young and inexperienced rosters, IMO.

Well people thought he sell Savoie cheap, and we see how it worked out. Adams shouldn't be afraid to sell some of his prospects and picks.

I did not believe that he sold Savoie cheap. I was pretty happy with that trade when it happened.

And this is a completely different situation. This is a report of multiple teams calling on a young NHLer that is performing lower than expectations to start the season.

I have no issue if Adams trades Quinn+ for a massive upgrade on the wing in the top 6. I just highly doubt those are the kinds of offers that the GMs that are calling Adams are putting on the table.

I didn't have a problem with that trade either, but did you see the thread on the main boards? Most people there were convinced that Adams was robbed and that McLeod wasn't very good.

I wasn't talking specifically about Quinn and his trade, but in general that Adams shouldn't be afraid to make some trades, because sometimes he does it well.

No thank you.

He’s an average to smallish sized (5’11 182lbs) journeyman winger who played his first NHL season last year at age 27. He isn’t physical, not sure if he has speed and its fair to argue his goal production last year was a fluke. His stat line is odd. He played 4th line minutes (10-11mins), no special teams and in 74gms put up 21g 8a 29pts with a SH% of 19%.

If we’re going to get someone, it should be an established NHLer.

I was talking specifically about the talk that Adams was getting calls on Quinn.

I think it is obvious that Adams should be open to making any trade that he feels addresses an immediate need on the NHL roster. But, that was not the kind of post I was replying to.

Yeah, that was pretty much my thought on the topic when I originally saw that post.

He had one season of a crazy high shooting% last year and he was a goals >>>>> assists guy, too.

I think last night's game was a microcosm of what this team needs. It needs more play drivers that can get the puck to our shooters in quality scoring areas more than players with + shooting talent.

Compete and effort have been a giant issue with this specific core group for years.

Practice is something that has come up from multiple former players/their new orgs after they left.

It has been noted by players and reporters that Lindy's practices have been notably harder for this group than previous regimes.

I don't care about past practice habits under former coaches.

This is a conversation about Ruff and what he is doing in practice. Ruff talked about how he planned early training camp practices to be extra hard and then guys would feel like they weren't that hard after they adapted to that kind of practice.

I trust that Ruff isn't going to go too easy on the team and strike the right balance of effort and intensity in practice. And then it is on the players to be more consistent in their off-ice habits and in games.

If Trotz is serious with his comments in Nashville, I'd still love to get Sissons and Fabbro.
What comments?

I am not seeing anything of note lately on any of the sites that I go to for stuff like that.

Have to think they're looking for a top-4 guy soon if not already. I'm not sure how much patience Ruff and Adams will have for Joki to gel with Power or Dahlin. The team cant afford to wait around for him to find his role. They need to get this squad confident and on a roll. Im sure Ruff notices where some of the major issues are on the PK, and the type of player he needs in front of the net.

Of course, that means a team needs to be shopping a top-4 D, which if they are the Sabres won't be the only team interested.

Dahlin is better keep at RD, then we potentially need a top 4 RD for Power. Fabbro would probably be a cheap buy, change of scenery, low risk, high reward and all that.

General manager Barry Trotz alluded Tuesday to a rebuild plan for the Nashville Predators if the team doesn't turn around their disappointing 4-7-1 start.

Only 12 games after spending $111 million on big names like Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault, the idea of a rebuild right now is surprising, especially given Trotz's aggressive approach in the offseason.

According to Trotz, who spoke to the Tennessean after his initial remarks, it's not that simple.

"We're never going to burn it down to the studs," Trotz said.

---------------------------
"I've tried to buy time through free agency with these older players so that we can still be a threat," Trotz said. "But if it doesn't work, I've still got to buy the time for those young players."

Trotz explained the future core of the Predators consists of about 10-12 players, including names like Tanner Molendyk, Andrew Gibson, Teddy Stiga, Reid Schaefer, Joakim Kemell, and Matthew Wood. But those players are all between ages 18 and 20, and they need more time to develop.

"I'm trying to thread the needle," Trotz said. "I'm trying to put together a group for the next core for this team and still try to remain competitive while I'm doing it, without going into a 10-year rebuild. I've been rebuilding for two years now, really."

The problem is − and why he mentioned a rebuild just 12 games in − what happens if the temporarily competitive roster isn't so competitive?
----------------------
"(Filip) Forsberg, (Roman) Josi, (Ryan) O'Reilly, (Brady) Skjei, and of course Stamkos and Marchessault, they are here," Trotz said. "They aren't going anywhere. And (Juuse) Saros. But everybody else, I might pull out and put in a young kid."

One area that's of most concern is the second line, which has seen a rotation of players at center, including Tommy Novak, Juuso Parssinen, and Colton Sissons. Trotz said the team is in the process of trying to find a second line center, which includes looking at trade options.

"If we don't find that (second line center) then maybe we start the process of letting some of those kids come up and play with Stamkos at center," Trotz said. "Maybe Reid Schaefer or (Zachary) L'Heureux or (Joakim) Kemell has to go in that wing spot."

It would be interesting to see the Sabres go after Sissons if he doesn't work as the 2C in Nashville. I wonder what his role with the Sabres would be expected to be?
