Prospect Info: The 2024-2025 Prospects Thread

This new NCAA rule that allows junior players to go there is awesome (should’ve been allowed a long time ago).

For guys on the margins like Romani, being able to get an education while still keep the dream alive is a major win. Even if they play hockey but not in the NHL, having something to fall back on afterwards in your 30s is a big plus.

There is the CHL scholarship you get by playing in the CHL. Canadian university hockey is not very good though.

Yeah the issue with it is some guys still have pro hockey hopes post CHL, and the Canadian university hockey system isn’t going to help prepare them for that.

Someone like Romani, even if they don’t make the NHL, might want to play in the AHL for 10-15 years. That’s not gonna be enough of a nest egg to retire, so having some education (even if they don’t get a full degree) to fall back on afterwards is a nice plus.

If you attend university, you pretty much need to finish your degree to have it mean anything in the professional world.

That is great to see.

I’m assuming we retain his rights for another 4 years now?
My guess is that something will get worked out and Canucks will continue to hold Romani's rights, but maybe not for four more years. NHLPA and agents don't want guys to get drafted out of the CHL at 18, stay there until 20 or 21 and then go to college and have the drafting team still hold their rights for another four years. Teams, of course, don't want guys from CHL to get drafted at age 18, skip to the NCAA and declare themselves free agents at age 20. There'll have to be a compromise position.

Not necessarily. lots of professions don't care about the letters behind your name, getting most of a degree and playing hockey may open some doors.

Mind you, my profession required a degree, and then professional registration. But not all are like that.

It appears that Anthony Romani will be headed to Michigan State next season. The Barrie Colts forward had an outstanding playoffs, registering 12 goals and 12 assists in 16 games. Multiple sources came forward with this info, so it seems to not be much of a secret anymore.

Probably will be good for his development as I'm not sure he is quite ready for a big role in the AHL.

A strong season in the NCAA then a move up to the AHL might be best for his development.

This is an interesting question, that I'm somebody out there will have an answer to.

Since Romani was drafted by the Canucks out of the OHL, normally he'd have to be signed by the end of his draft-plus two season--or go back into the draft.

In NCAA hockey on the other other hand, a player doesn't become a complete UFA until August of his senior year. So theoretically the Canucks would have four seasons to make a decision on him.

I suppose the NHL brain-trust has a solution to this......but I have no idea what it is.
It's an evolving issue that needs to be sorted out and basically will affect every team so some decision will happen before the end of next year one would think.

There are guys for whom it will matter in just a few weeks (based on current rules: June 1 deadline to sign 2023 draftees from CHL and to extend bona fide offers that retain exclusive negotiating rights to 2024 draftees).

An aspect that I over looked is that US college players are now get and are allowed to earn money.

As an example, Willander, he is allowed to earn all money from sales from his likeness, commercials, Tshirts, use of his name while still in college. If he has marketing in Sweden he can keep all that money plus he will get some extra from Boston in TV rights.
They pay all his student expenses and accommodations plus TV money.

As another example I think, both Schnieder and Demko could have earned 100's of thousands of dollars if these new rules were in act back then in their college careers.

While an entry level contract will still be more the players will have a cushion that has the potential to take them to the same level of compensation, not likely unless a huge super star but something. And in Sweden who knows how much of a presence can Willander build in another year.

Just a talking point that's all.

i believe nothing changes with regards to romani's rights. either the canucks sign him by june 1 (2026) or he becomes a free agent
There's stuff up in the air; we don't know if a clarification statement or perhaps even a modification for the remaining 13 months of the existing CBA rules will be forthcoming soon. That's preamble to me admitting that I'm speculating here, but based on the current CBA I think this is more likely the section that would apply now to Romani. His commitment to Michigan State for the upcoming season, based on what I know with similar situations involving USHL players, qualifies him as a bona fide college student.

If a Player drafted at age 18 or 19 is a bona fide college student at the time of his selection in the Entry Draft, or becomes a bona fide college student prior to the first June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft, and remains a bona fide college student through the graduation of his college class, his drafting Club shall retain the exclusive right of negotiation for his services through and including the August 15 following the graduation of his college class. The Club need not make a Bona Fide Offer to such Player to retain such rights.

If a Player drafted at age 18 or 19 is a bona fide college student at the time of his selection in the Entry Draft, or becomes a bona fide college student prior to the first June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft, and does not remain a bona fide college student through the graduation of his college class, his drafting Club shall retain exclusive rights for the negotiation of his services until the later of: (a) the fourth June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft, or (b) thirty (30) days after NHL Central Registry receives notice that the Player is no longer a bona fide college student

CHLers involved or potentially involved in this scenario in 2025 and 2026 might already have a good idea of how things will shake out and are acting accordingly. Hard to imagine that the NHL would allow a situation that would encourage a bunch of CHLers drafted two years ago to simply wait until June 2 to free themselves from the team that drafted them, then commit to the NCAA.

Great choice! Even if he doesn't make it, he gets an ivy level education. Kid has got smart people around him.

Michigan State is a solid school but not close to Ivy-level; it's considered a level below UBC. Michigan is rated as one of the best public universities and no one confuses it with the likes of the top private schools such as Harvard/MIT/Stanford.

I think you got that backwards. Michigan is ranked above UBC by quite some margin in terms of overall rankings. UBC is ranked 41st in the world, Toronto is ranked 21st, and Michigan is ranked 22nd. For my program (Accounting) they have one of the best, if not the best PhD program in the world.

It's known as a public Ivy school and is one of the "New Ivies." Michigan is a fantastic school and he is lucky to have that opportunity.

Michigan... not Michigan State which is where Romani is heading.

It does not appear the Canucks will be offering Lucas Forsell a contract.
- Rick Dhaliwal

While those deals will typically include an out clause (details not included), both players somewhat recently signed extensions overseas.

Lucas Forsell signed a three-year deal with Färjestad in Janaury, 2024. While Hugo Gabrielson signed a two-year extension back in November.

- Dave Hall

Not surprising.

Had a blip three seasons ago to get to 11 goals but in the bigger picture he's spent 4 seasons now in a sub-AHL level league and is still a 4th liner who scored 9 points last year.

Forsell's falling off is disappointing. That 22-23 season looked like he was poised to build himself into a lock to head over to the AHL, but then the next two just killed him as being a player that ever leaves Europe.

Gabrielson is closer, but also likely to go unsigned due to the LD logjam. If we pass on him, he's very likely to spend his entire career in Europe unless he catches a scout's eye in a big way.

I checked the history of Canuck draft picks on Hockey DB. Of course the Canucks are cutting Gabrielson and Forsell loose. The record of later round draft picks actually working out in the Benning era was basically 'zero', 'nada' , 'bumpkiss'.

In fact the current JR-Allvin regime has uncovered more later round gems in three entry drafts, than the Benning regime found in almost a decade of drafting. Even guys at the upper end like Lind, Klimovich, Woo and the departed Podkolzin are doing nothing, at least in Vancouver.

When it comes to the entry draft--Benning and his scouting staff really were as bad as it gets.
