Why do some people say Willander won't provide much offense? His production in college suggests otherwise. Hughes was a point a game, like Willander is close to so far.

Anyways, Willander is showing signs (imo) that he could develop into a #1 D, which would be huge for the Canucks. Hughes anchoring the top pair, and Willander anchoring another top pair.

I agree. I don't know what it is about NCAA hockey, but it seems not a lot of d-men put up gaudy point-totals from the back-end.

Maybe they play a more structured type of game, where the job of the d-men is to get the puck up to the forwards, who are expected to do the scoring. Or possible, the lack of powerplay opportunities.

But as you point out, Quinn Hughes had pretty pedestrian numbers in his two years at Michigan. Just based on those Wilander YouTube highlights, I suspect that he'll generate a lot more offense in pro hockey.

Hughes also played with a pretty damn shitty team. Pretty sure Lockwood was like their top scorer for one of those seasons.

A lot of posters here are butthurt about the team picking Willander over Benson and can’t get over that fact and because of that, a bunch of them decided to take the position Willander f***ing sucks regardless of how he actually performs. Willander seems like he’s really good to elite defensively so in order to establish the idea that he sucks, the only they can go with is he sucks offensively.

Could very well be Alriksson's best game in his OHL career, he finishes with 1 goal and 2 assists in a 7-6 Guelph Storm loss over the London Knight's
Now that he's signed a pro contract and unless he's traded to a better OHL team, it seems pretty apparent that Guelph really isn't going anywhere this season.

So we could see him in Abbotsford sometime in March. And as of this morning, the Seattle Thunderbirds are dead last in the WHL's Western Conference with a 5-11-2 record. So unless Mynio is dealt to another WHL contender, there's a good chance he's in Abbotsford by March as well.

I have a huge feeling that the Storm are going to be Sellers and trade Luchanko and all of their veterans and start a major rebuild. London is winning the west and Barrie looks really good in the east

Hughes was his team's leading scorer as a defenseman (and was a Hobey Baker finalist) in his D+1. Lockwood was second on that team.

IIRC, that was his second year in the NCAA because he graduated early so that he could play his freshman NCAA year as the youngest player in NCAA D1, in what should have been his final year of high school. Not certain what is "pedestrian" about that.

My gawd!.....in those highlights, Arliksson looks like a redwood skating in forest of saplings. It's jarring just how immense he looks out there.

Certainly a 6'6, 230 forward who can skate like that gets your attention in a hurry. I really don't know much about his hockey sense......maybe he's the second coming of Shawn Antoski.

But if ever starts using that big frame to his advantage in the offensive zone, he's going to be some kind of weapon. I guess we'll find out when he hits the ice in Abbotsford, probably no later than mid-March.

He did well in the camps, and got an extended look by the daddy Canucks. His 2 flaws are that he is not posting that many points, and his snarl. Well he seems to be getting some points, and also punishing a few people for transgressions. After starting slowly he has 6 pts in his last 5 games. 6'6" and 230 at the start of the season. If he ever gets "possessed" he could be an unstoppable demon. Imagine in 3 years with him on the wing at 245 lbs with decent skating, mobility and shot.

Edit - there were lots of questions about this pick at the time. But the Canucks signed him early. And he has protected a few team mates, damn they could use him in Abby if his snarl is improving. Anyone want to bet against his being called up as the first choice this time next year? And honestly, he could move up faster than that on the prospect list. I think it all depends on desire. Getting him in 2023 in the 4th round is going to look like a steal methinks.

Note, yes I often show unbridled optimism about prospects. But bloody hell, we have Lekkerimaki Willander and Alriksson in the Swedish invasion, and 3 - 4 others that seem to be damn good prospects. Once again, I would bet all 3 of these make the line up next season.

2nd edit - his weight is 234 not 230, and I have quite a few pounds to gift him. Sadly most of them are alcohol related....

He’s not even a ppg yet in the ohl. I think he’s got some promise but I’d say you’re jumping the gun a wee bit pencilling him into next years lineup!
I don't think he makes the starting line up, but think he will play in the AHL next year, and have a good chance to be a call up. If he learns how to use his weight to his advantage, and shows some snarl.

So I watched Dorrington over the weekend, not his best performance but still good overall. Definitely someone who is still very raw, I would like to see him in the AHL next year since I think that getting him to learn how to play physical against men would be the most beneficial to his development. But I'd understand if that may be a bit hard since he's entering his 4th year and might want to finish off his degree.

Over the weekend, he wasn't as physically engaged as he was the other times I had watched him. He did show more offensive flair despite not getting points. He can make the occasional brain fart and sometimes he puts himself out of position a little too easily. There was a ton of penalties called over this weekend so he did play a ton of minutes and they do play back-to-back so I can understand why brian farts happen. I have a little bit of footage but not too too much, if you guys are interested I can upload it probably to a streamable.

Dorrington plays on a pairing with Borgesi, who is the teams best offensive defenseman and that pairing has been great overall. The rest of the team is kind of meh outside of their top line (10 regulars on the team have 1 point or less through 7 games) so putting up points has been a struggle.

I'll keep an eye out this week and see if I can get some more footage instead of just "a nice transition into the zone" or "nice angle to the boards."
