The 2013 POWERPLAY Thread

this will be an ongoing conversation the whole season.

if this team is top 7 in the pp, we are going to be tough to play against.

but who do we play there ?

do we go 4 forwards 1 dman ? we have alot of forwards who have the talent to play on the 1st unit. whos on that 1st unit ?

it isnt always about the forwards with the most talent on the pp. a guy like boyle comes to mind or heck, even cally.

we know mdz is gonna play there but does stralman play the pp ? mcdonough ?

We're already a tough team to play against... Anyway...

PP Unit 1:

Nash - Stepan - Gaborik

Del Zotto - Richards


Or put Cally on the left wing and throw Nash on the 2nd unit. Callahan is one of our best PP players.


Who knows about unit two. I can see Halpern being thrown on that unit for the obvious reason. Or just throw Richards at center and have either Hagelin/Callahan/Kreider at wings. Throw McD and Staal on the blueline.

Really can't go wrong anyway you put the units together. It's all about getting the job done at the end of it all. Hopefully the look on paper brings actual results.
 
I honestly wonder if we will see Pyatt on the 1st PP unit. His big body would be great to have in front of the net.

I have laid it out before but I would try:

Nash-Richards-Pyatt
MDZ-Gaborik

just for the faceoff

And then:

Nash-Pyatt-Gaborik
MDZ-Richards

for the PP with Pyatt in front of the net

Net presence from Nash and Pyatt on the sides. Richards draws the forwards away from the point. More space for DZ & Gabby for shots at the high slot/point.
 
My concern with the PP is the lack of a one-timer threat from the right circle. It's so easy for teams to overload the one side because they don't have to cover that shooting lane. Stepan, for all of his abilities, has a pretty lousy one-timer. He's also a pass-first guy, so I'd rather see him QBing the 2nd unit than manning the dot on the first unit.

I'd also like to see McDonagh get 2nd unit time with Stralman this year:

Stepan - Boyle - Kreider/Hagelin
Stralman - McDonagh

That would be my 2nd unit. First unit, I have no clue. Go get Michael Ryder so we can have a RH sniper on the off-wing. :laugh:
 
Its tempting to put all of our guns on the same unit and dare the opposition to stop us.

Nash-Callahan-Gaborik
Richards-Del Zotto

is a combined 140 goals or so over a full season. But, that leaves our next unit with Hagelin, Stepan, Kreider, Stralman, and McDonagh, and that doesn't seem that effective.

You could split Gaborik and Nash, but we're still down a center due to Richards on the point, or you could completely overload and go with...

Nash-Stepan-Callahan
Richards-Gaborik

Which is what I think we'll see in 5 on 3 situations.
 
I like the idea of Kreider on the PP with his shot. I think having CK firing away from inside the hash marks would be great, and he has experience playing at center. I would try this as our first line:

Nash - Kreider - Gaborik
Del Zotto - Richards
 
How hard could it be to learn to shoot better, specifically when it comes to accuracy? Why can't MDZ stay on the ice for an hour after everyone else leaves? He can develop into a 15+40=55 player with a stronger, more accurate shot. His passing is phenomenal, and if he can open up some ice by making teams scared of his shot, he would be an All Star.

Teams are deathly afraid of his shot. Mainly because no one knows where it will go. :laugh:

You can't teach some one to have a hard and powerful shot. You can't teach a good one timer. I think Del Zotto has a GOOD shot, just an inaccurate one.

You can have an accurate shot but if your shot is as weak as Shane Churla's was during his stint here then it won't matter how accurate you are.

If it was easy, wouldn't most players in the NHL have an accurate shot? It's not as simple as having a guy rip 50 pucks at the net after each practice. Some guys just don't have the timing or the ability to get that kind of shot off under pressure.

Hell, I can rip a decent slapper from the point and get it on net. Could I do it with an NHL forward bearing down on me while he's killing a penalty? Doubt it. Del Zotto is trying to pick his corners. In fact, I think his problem is that he tries to be too cute with his shot, instead of just getting it on net.
 
I'd really like to see Pyatt get some playing time along with McD playing a bigger role on the PP as well. He played pretty well on the PP in the playoffs last season.

That's why I liked Stralman back there, towards the end of last season and throughout the playoffs he was shooting almost every time he got the puck. A lot of low hard shots that got to the front of the net.

Agreed. I think both Stralman and Bickel will be better this year than people are anticipating. I also think people are forgetting how steady Eminger had become prior to his injury. All of which (along with Gilroy as decent depth) is why we haven't seen Slats make a move for another Dman.



Now watch him swing a trade out of the blue tomorrow. :)
 
I definitely want to see Torts give McDonagh some 2nd unit PP time. Maybe with Stralman? I also think Nash and Gaborik should be on separate units for matchup purposes:

However, the counterpoint for that opinion is that if you go something like Nash - Stepan - Callahan with MDZ and Richards on the points, who takes the draws on the 2nd unit and who is the 6th forward? Hagelin/Kreider - ? - Gaborik with McDonagh and Stralman.

Just throwing out ideas here.

I'd think that Boyle would be on the second unit. Hopefully Boyle learns to use his size effectively in front of the net.
