Tulsky has always been a significant part of the braintrust since Dundon became owner, and I'm pretty sure that Dundon had to be aware that other clubs were interested in making him GM. This news therefore comes as no surprise. In recent years, the most successful FOs have promoted from within. Tampa did it with BriseBois, Colorado did it with MacFarland, Rangers did it with Drury, and Vegas did it with McCrimmon. Now Carolina is joining the club.

Assume they're going to bring in someone to be the "relationships" guy at whatever the title; they seemed to value having DW in that role.

Still, this is good news and makes it clear who is heading up the brain trust.

Not going to lie, little concerned here.

With this critical offseason upcoming, I'd feel better with another year or two of Waddell. That and, I'm not sure how NHL GMs are going to want to do business with someone who isn't in the "club" or a former player.

But if it prevents him from leaving then I'll try to get over my concerns and see what he can do. Good luck Tulsky, may your guidance bring us Lord Stanley's Cup.

I'm not sure I see them still bringing in the "relationships" guy. That seemed to be the point of the guys they interviewed already based on a couple of the names floated. If there was a fit on both sides, it seems likely it would have happened during this process. I guess anything is possible, but it seems more likely to me that they would just bring in another assistant GM type to backfill the open position.

Here's my shocked face. I am very shocked.

Anyway, good. Either Tulsky or Yorke would have been fine choices, but I don't want somebody from the outside, I want somebody who already is used to and believes in our collaborative system. Promote everyone internally and backfill in the junior ranks. Good for morale, too, when people see there is opportunity to move up. We have a good front office culture going and I don't want to bring in some fossil who constantly resents that he's not able to force everyone to just worship him.

I posted this on the main board, but I thought it would be an interesting thing to discuss. There have been two prior instances of organizations hiring GMs with analytical backgrounds: Chayka in Arizona and Dubas with the Leafs. One was a full-fledged disaster area and the other one has a mixed (but IMO mostly positive) legacy marred by multiple postseason chokes. It remains to be seen how Tulsky pans out as a GM, but I'm quite optimistic that it will be better than these first two.

The two major differences that I see here with Tulsky vs. the others is age and experience. Tulsky and Dubas both entered the NHL around 2014, but Dubas was 29 and Tulsky was 40. Dubas was hired as a GM in 2018 when he was only 33. Tulsky has worked his way up the chain working with old-school hockey scouts and executives for a decade and has finally been hired as a GM in his late 40s. Don't even get me started on Chayka, who was basically a 26 year old kid with a year's experience when he got a GM gig. Yeah, they all have an analytical background, but Tulsky's brand is the more mature and wise version of that approach.

I don’t think dubas was a positive. Like at all. He traded away a ton of valuable guys and never solved Toronto’s issue.

Shanahan stopped him from trading marner. Regardless of how he botched their contracts, I say most of the blame lies on Shanahan, not Dubas.
Seeing how the first year in Pittsburgh went, I don’t think most of the blame lies on shanahan
