Also was literally a cucumber during the Montreal series, whereas Torts no doubt would have tried to fight Michelle by Game 2.

When Dorsett started against Prust last night, I thought for sure they were going to fight. They would've if Torts was the coach.

Instead, the 4th line went out and had a dominating shift that set the table for the rest of the game.

I'm not sure about literally, but there's definitely a big difference in their demeanor.

I was an admitted skeptic. But the man has won me over. He never, even when the team was at their worst, wavered from what he believe and the system he wanted to play. And, like what I loved about Tom Renney, he never gets too high or too low and the team follows suit.

I wasn't a skeptic, just thought it was another lazy hire - just hire the guy who was available that coached in a Cup final last. Tort's, then AV. But the players wanted Torts gone, it was them that forced the move, thats why Sather said it was a sudden change, he would have stuck with Torts if not for the players.

Like you said, never too high or too low. People forget, as wacky as Keenan was, he was the same in those playoffs. No tantrums, no sending all his players off the bench during a timeout ;)

I still think it was a lazy hire, just one that worked out!

Also, I echo the sentiments that John Tortorella deserves some credit for helping mold the players into what they are today.

And a secondary assist to Tom Renney. Although he coached only Lundqvist (I think? and Moore I guess) of this current team, he brought the team out of a long lasting culture of losing.

This.

As much as I didn't like Torts he instilled a winning mentality into some of our core players. Couldn't thank him enough for that.

I could see the angle where people think AV was a lazy hire, but I really didn't agree. I thought he was a coach that rarely-to-never hits the open market, and that any team would love to swallow up. I loved how he coached in VAN, and unlike certain other coaches, he learned a few lessons from being fired that he brought with him to NY.

A lot of things he was criticized for in VAN haven't been here. He's treated the young players very well, and helped Kreider break out. He's kept the lines consistent. His use of zone starts and TOI management have been absolutely superb (though, to be fair, he definitely has the correct personnel to manage that TOI). He's given second chances to players, and when they didn't grasp them, they were gonzo (lol DZ). There was no sitting back on leads except for a few occasions (and even then, short shifts, masterful). He grew as a coach, and came in and took a mediocre-looking roster to the next level.

Can't say enough about Ulfie and Arniel's contributions either. PP has looked FAR better than any other PP we've had recently, and Ulfie took an already excellent PK to an even greater level. 2 PP goals against this series, with two of the best PPQB's in the league firing away? Whoda thunk?

Just great contributions from throughout this staff. Brilliantly put together.

Lazy would have been just hiring the fan favorite (Messier). Hiring AV was anything but lazy. He was hiring the best guy available knowing you would get some media and fan backlash over Messier.

Lazy hire? LOL SMH

Haven't won anything yet. Don't get me wrong - very appreciative of where NYR has gotten so far - but I'm not about to express thanks before the season is over. In a couple weeks (regardless of result)? Sure.

That said, happily and enthusiastically eating crow on the firing of Torts. Still not totally convinced that Torts was the problem with that team. Or that with a better lineup (i.e. a few tweaks to the 11-12 team, or say, the lineup since this year's deadline) he couldn't have gotten the team as far as AV has. But we'll never know about that one, and I've accepted at this point that it was time for Torts and the team to move on.

AV and his assistants have done a great job with this team and molded them to fit his team concept. The players have stepped up so far. Great job AV, and great job NYR.

Keep it goin' and get that cup.

yeah, have to say this. alot of people going with the "**** you torts" line, but if not for that ECF run with Torts in 2012, these guys would not be here again in 2014.

Thanks again, Torts.

Sullivan on the other hand, he can take a big finger.

I agree. Many of the things Torts taught them like shot-blocking is key to their run, as is the experience of 2012. It was a lesson for the team on how to work hard and for the management on how much you need depth.

If we win, Torts is one of the major reasons for it.

I think the Rangers season started to really turn around the day they brought in Kevin Klein. We could always depend on McDonagh, Girardi, Staal and Stralman to play poised in their own end. It was always after that that composure broke down. On the day Klein arrived all of a sudden we had a calm third pair that you didn't have to worry about very much. The Rangers got their defense in order and ever since we've been trending upwards.

this is definitely part of the upswing into the playoffs. Klein was like the 2nd or 3rd best defenseman in this series against MTL... All over the ice, coverage was awesome, one of the faster defensemen (only Moore and McD were faster than him).

Klein played just a notch below Stralman this series. He totally outplayed Staal and Girardi, who looked overwhelmed by the Habs' speed.

was against the firing of Torts big time, until i heard he lost the lockerroom. was pretty down on the players for getting him fired.

great hire though. i still am not a fan of man to man defense, but the team almost seems to be playing a hybrid style nowadays. not straight man to man, they do switches when they can to get people back where they belong. team has come a long long way. i do love the puck possession game.

I really like Torts. I think he did a lot for the Rangers in his tenure here.

AV has done an absolutely amazing job this year. Fantastic turnaround after the disastrous start to the season. If there's one thing I sense from AV it is that he is always looking to become a better coach and deepen his understanding of the game and the players under him. Other coaches seem more set in their ways.

His patience and composure is a welcome change from Torts too.

Thank you AV! Tremendous coaching. Staying cool, calm and collected during the tough times both in the regular season and the playoffs. Allowed the team to gel as a cohesive unit. His system ain't half bad either :D. Classic example of his coolheadedness was his "what are you smoking?" joke last night at the podium. Poked fun at himself and the team after a crazy, grueling playoffs thus far.

That being said, shoulda hired Mess :sarcasm:

Av and his staff deserve the credit for this run more so than anything Torts ever did for this team. Torts' influence lives on in a few but what's most impressive about AV and his staff is their ability to develop a gameplan, and adjust that game plan when required. AV plays 4 lines and 6 d and that was vital late in the Candians series. I'd argue it was a huge reason the Rangers won game 6. The amount of subtle in game adjustments and game to game adjustments are not lost on me. That's a direct result of the coaches and their ability to see what needs to be changed and implement the required changes.

AV and his staff are one of the two most successful coaching staff's this season. My hats off to them and let's all give them the credit they deserve far beyond this season! I think they've earned our support.

Theres a foundation still here from what Torts provided. The team still has the ability to hunker down defensively thats very necessary with a lead in the playoffs.

I think one of the bigger differences is Torts employed that style with just a handful of trusted players. AV's willingness to role 4 lines and preach extremely short shifts in the 3rd has paid huge dividends. They often look like the fresher team as the game goes on.

The screaming example of AV's influence on locking down a lead was in my opinion, the 3rd period against the Habs game 6. The Rangers just owned them that period, had much more live legs, the Habs were totally gassed. By the time it reached 15 minutes they barely had a chance. Meanwhile, the team that played two 7 game series' is the one who looks fresh. It was beautiful.

Torts needs quite a bit of credit for instilling that "lock the fort down" ability, though. I absolutely agree.

"It's 4 games out of 82 relax. Why must all fans of sports be so damn reactionary?"

I proudly pat myself on the back for making that post in that thread. ;)

Lol... I said the same thing, albeit in a slightly less calm manner than you: "This thread was made after 4 games? Someone seriously said to fire a new coach after FOUR ****ing games? Are you ****ing kidding me?! What a pathetic, embarrassing, bridge jumping mentality. Yeah, let's bring Torts back, where we can behold more seasons of a non-transition game with that NCAA division 2 PP he ran. That was stellar."

Love AV as our coach. Best ties in the league.

Enjoy listening and seeing a calm and centered person on the bench and in the post game. Having speed and being able to generate off the transition is great to see. We're also keeping guys fresh with 4 lines. Love it.

First, I wanted to start by saying that even though this is not Sather's appreciation thread, he should take a lot of credit for the success the team and coaching staff he put together for this season. Typically it take an implosion of a team to get the coaching change but in this case Sather was proactive, rather than reactive which allowed the Rangers (and us the fans) to avoid the situation altogether. Also, all the players moves this season actually worked out.

Re. AV vs Torts, I also don't like comparison of AV rolling four lines and three D pairs where Torts mainly relied on top two lines and D pairs due to roster issues in years past. However, I'm not completely convinced that Torts would not be pushing for at least one of D Moore or Boyle into top 9 and Pyatt into the 4th line. Would he be patient enough to stick with Brassard's line or enough conviction that Stepan's line with Nash and Kreider will work?

AV and this Rangers team definitely exceeded my expectations for this season - it was supposed to be a year of transition where getting to the play-offs and into the round 2 would be good building block for the future. However this team hold on to the opportunity they created for themselves by coming together and peaking at exactly the right time. Kudos to the coaching staff and especially AV for his part in this run. But it is not over yet and not yet a time for reflection and complete analysis.
