Cool, calm, cerebral. Sharply dressed.

Favorite coach in my time watching the Rangers AINEC. He exemplifies nearly everything I appreciate in another person.
 
I want to also thank Tortorella who taught our kids well, then was good enough to be a dope and get himself fired to pave the way for AV's arrival. So thank you both!

This is so true, it's not even funny. This team hasn't forgotten the D Torts taught them. Plus the O and speed of AV ... quite amazing education. :yo:
 
He really is a great coach!

Only minor thing I don't quite understand is his reluctance to call timeouts. There have been quite a few times where the situation just screams timeout, but he never takes one.

But you know life's good as a Ranger fan, when that is the only issue with the coach ;)

I dunno if I"m in that thread but there was a period of games in December maybe (or late November) where they suddenly reverted back to playing terrible hockey and I was seriously questioning AV's coaching at that point. Just didn't seem like a team should struggle so much like that and regress to looking like it was game 1 of the regular season 2 months into the season.

However it certainly looks now like it was just growing pains, and he and his staff did a great job in the end. Really don't want Ulf to go but hell I understand...he gets chance to be a head coach, gotta respect that. Hope AV can find someone else to replace him.

Nucks in the SCF and the way they played spoiled it a little, but he's a great coach. Always seems very calm.
 
They've done a great job with the team. Instilling responsibility within a defined system, keeping the team calm looking forward, and preparing the guys each night.

Win four more and they'll all be heroes in NY sports for the rest of their lives.

Yeah, but the thing, I wonder how much and what he exactly is responsible for.

I mean, undoubtedly he set the direction in the big picture. But I also definitely get the sense that he isn't very hands on in many other areas. Ulfie, Arniel, the players, definitely deserve a lot of credit for this too.

For this team, the most important thing was the we got away from being extremely consequent playing a style that worked in 03' but was insane post the lockout in 05'. But I am pretty sure that if you could sit down with a group of our players and ask them like "AV must be amazing, right?", they would kind of look at each other, be quite for a while and go like "yeah he has done a good job". But I would be suprised if they saw him as some kind of super savior.

This is very much speculation, but I think the keys behind this team's success has been the following:

1. AV righted the ship from the get go. He clearly saw that what we was doing wasn't gonna a work in this league, and made a 180'. He deserves praise for that, because when you change as much as he did, its going to take a long time to get going and it did for us and it wasn't pretty meanwhile.

2. He has been humble in relation to his work and changed his mind and adjusted many times -- with a very clear goal.

He came in as a clear 2+2 coach, but all of a sudden became maybe the most extreme 4 line coach in the leauge. BR leads the forwards with 18:40 in icetime, and without him playing a ton of PP like no forward would barely top 17 minutes. He didn't play the Sedin's a ton either, but he did divde his zone starts a lot between his top 2 lines and bottom 2 lines in Vancouver.

Like mid-season this year, you could easily tell that we had a 1st line that wasn't functioning (on many nights, our 1st line was litterary our worst line), but that the team as a whole played fairly good hockey despite it. MANY COACHES would not have believed that they could get anywhere without a "top line", and would have started experimenting to get the 1st going at the expense of disrupting the 2nd and 3rd lines. I do think that his approch in regards to this is pretty unique, many many coaches would have tried to jump start our 1st by changing up the lines, by playing them to death with top minutes to get them going, etc etc etc. Pretty much standard actions.

I think that really shows how he got a very good inner compass of what it takes to win and that very little will rattle him.
 
Clearly came in as a 2+2 coach, what do you mean by that? It seemed clear to me that he was looking for four solid lines from the start and it was mentioned a lot during broadcasts that he felt a big reason his Vancouver team lost to Boston is that they rolled 4 effective lines and his team didn't.

He purposefully worked out a 4th line that could be relied upon in games instead of loading it down with useless fighters like Tortorella liked to do.

I mean, I'll have to go back and look at average icetimes near the beginning of the season but as far as I can remember he was always a roll 4 lines guy with the Rangers.
 
14 goals in 4 1/2 periods.

I knew there would be some some growing pains but this is ridiculous.

They aren't even competitive.

my oh my how things can change.

AV has been superlative. Calm, collected and in control. Every move hes made is for the better of the team. Hes calculated and he allows his assistants to focus on a responsibility and coach. Dont underestimate that quality.

yeah, have to say this. alot of people going with the "**** you torts" line, but if not for that ECF run with Torts in 2012, these guys would not be here again in 2014.

Ruff did some good work in Dallas this year too, so I have to say he would have been another decent candidate, hwoever little faith I had in him this time last year.
