Hmm lets see its 23 and under, so:

Galchenyuk-McDavid-MacKinnon
Drouin-Monohan-Lazar
Domi-Eichel-Marner
Huberdeau-Horvat-Nylander (Western Canadian kid ;))
Petan/D.Strome

Rielly-Ekblad
Fowler-Jones
Murray-Trouba
Hanifin

Gibson
Subban

All guys will be under 23 for the next 2 years :amazed:

Cam Fowler? He's already 23 years old. I doubt he'll be 23 years old in Sept. 2016.

Gibson will be 23 years old + 2 months in Sept 2016. If it is strictly a U23 team, then he is ineligible. Huberdeau as well, 23 + 3 months in Sept 2016.

Nylander? I can't see it, even though he was born in Calgary, I can't see him wanting any part of team N. American Young Guns.

This whole concept is a complete waste of time and utterly laughable.

MacKinnon and McDavid will play U23 team. Even if they scored 80 points and deserved to play for Canada.

I don't like this idea, but we'll see.

I wonder - have any of these obviously delusional suits asked what the players think about these plans, especially those who could possibly be in for an invite for these Team Leftovers?

If I'm to play the Devil's advocate, I could say it might be a neat experience for players for whom an appearance in an event like this could otherwise be a long shot - like, say, Kopitar or Vanek (and yes, I'm aware both were just at the olympics). But the Slovakians and the Swiss, guys who can actually be part of a decent, competitive NT should do nothing but scoff at the idea. Unless they're contractually obligated to participate, hope they do.

Not contractually obligated, but since this is a joint NHL and NHLPA venture, whereby revenue goes into the HRR pool, I think the PA would not like it if their membership scoffed too loudly at this proposal. Although, I wish they would come out and criticize this from the rooftops, b/c the concept is beyond lame.

Yeah, imagine if 22 year old Crosby had scored that OT goal against Team Canada playing for Young All Stars

This event will be great because the IOC and their garbage rules and politics will have nothing to do with this.

At least now if your team makes it to the gold medal game, you don't have to worry about losing your top C for having 1.4X the legal amount of cough syrup in his system.

No, instead we'll just lose our best young players right out of the starting gate because they'll be on the kiddie team. The IOC in its dumbest moment wouldn't come up with something this bad.

The tournament will be played in Toronto. Will have 100% NHL players.

There aren't enough Finns, Czechs or Russians in the NHL for them to field complete teams.

So how will the "World Cup" deal with that problem? Loan them some Canadians to fill in their rosters? I wouldn't put it past them at this point.

The only fans who will put up with this idiocy masquerading as international hockey are those dumb enough to shell out $350+ to watch the Leafs. So no wonder the NHL chose Toronto on which to drop this turd.

Hm, but what team will play McJesus? For Canada or young stars?

Elliote Friedman revealed on Sat the u24 actually has dibs over that age group, even if the actual NT wants them. That's right, the NHL created a tournament where they overrule the decisions of Canada's team selection....

Yep, I think they know any Toronto would eat this up without even blinking. And as its setup, I dont see any reason Europeans would want to bid for these games.

This tournament is an afront to fans and players everywhere.

Insulting to Slovaks and Swiss for effectively saying that their teams are such rubbish that they need to be merged along with some Germans, Austrians and a Slovene.

Insulting to the rest of Europe by (perhaps) excluding the use of Euro-based players. We'll see how the NHL deals with the lack of NHLers necessary for Finland, Russia or the Czechs to field a complete team.

Insulting to Canadians and Americans by stripping away their best young stars for some pathetic kids team.

Insulting to all fans by replacing a legitimate best-on-best event with the biggest joke in the history of the international sports.

And the worst part? It's all 100% unnecessary. The World Cup in 1996 and 2004 worked the same way as the Canada Cup: open to the best national teams and the best players no matter where they play. As it should be.

There is no need to ruin what worked before: Canada, USA, Sweden, Russia, Finland, Czech Rep, Slovakia and Switzerland (replacing Germany). Done.

Can we have an Over-45 Team? You know, to capture all those fans that were too young to watch Gretzky pass to Lemieux in '87 the first time around. Put Gretzky, Lemieux and Yzerman on the first line, and Roy in goal.

Now let's have a 3rd-4th Line Team. So David Clarkson and Chris Neil can defend the honour of the pluggers of the NHL.

That would create a 10-team tournament, and would give even more NHL players and alumni a chance to shine. Or expand to 12 teams and include a Team Owners and a Team Ice Girls. At least then you can REALLY get the mainstream American audience to tune in.

No wonder Fasel isn't against this. This is not a competitor for Olympics, not even for WHC.

It's clear that Fasel is letting the NHL destroy itself as a credible player on the international scene.

If the World Cup flops (as I pray it will), either due to player revolt or fan revulsion, then the pressure might be on to return to the Olympics.

There aren't enough Finns, Czechs or Russians in the NHL for them to field complete teams.

The Czech Rep has had close to 40 players appear in a NHL game this year and the vast majority seem to full time NHL roster guys...

23 Forwards
10 Defencemen
4 Goalies

Not in any way endorsing the NHL's plan (IMHO it's awful), just pointing out the Czech Rep could scrape together a full team only using players under NHL contract.

How come Russia/Sweden/Finland/Czech get to keep their under-23's but not Canada or USA? Are we to assume that Canada and USA are somehow better than the rest? That's like giving Usain Bolt's opponents a 1 second head start in the 100 m race. Except in this case Usain Bolt isn't any faster than his opponents.

And wouldn't it be something if Connor McDavid became the most hated player in Canada after he leads his kiddie team to gold over Canada?

Young Stars are going to win gold!!!!!!!!!!!

McDavid, Eichel, Ekblad, Forsberg, Monahan, Gaudreau..............

I love it. Can't wait to see how it plays out.

Forsberg would not play for the North American U-23 all-stars

I can't believe someone from Sweden is crapping on this. This event will be great because the IOC and their garbage rules and politics will have nothing to do with this.

At least now if your team makes it to the gold medal game, you don't have to worry about losing your top C for having 1.4X the legal amount of cough syrup in his system.

Instead we will have the NHL garbage and politics.

The tournament will be played in Toronto. Will have 100% NHL players. Game times will be determined by what is best for the American/Canadian markets. The tournament will be a success with or without support from Europeans.

There will not be 100% NHL players, since Czech Rep., Russia and Finland cannot field full teams with NHL-only players. And since NHL runs it during the KHL/SHL/Liiga season/pre-season and take all the profits, these teams will be filled out with AHL-players rather than superior KHL/SHL/Liiga players. Enjoy not seeing Kovalchuk in a "best-on-best". This tournament is a joke, equivalent of a pre-season all-star game series.

Yes to all. It's an absolute farce. We have Canada and USA not able to pick their optimal rosters, as another team has first rights on some of their players. Said team is composed of players from two different countries, and is the only team in the tournament forced to play under an age limit. Another team is composed of various players from different nations. If European teams are forced to give preference to NHL players (not sure if it will happen, but seems reasonable to expect at this point) then they are forced to select some inferior players to their teams and literally no national team will be at optimal strength. I can't remember a worse idea for a tournament in any other sport.

I hope, for the spectacle of it all, that team NA Young Gunz wins. I want to see those proud Canadian-Americans fulfill their dream of singing the Young Gunz anthem and feeling the pride of seeing the Young Gunz flag fly high in the air.

If that happened I honestly think most people wouldn't care... And that's probably not a good thing for the tournament.

I'm obviously kidding about Canada hating McDavid. On the other hand, it's easy to imagine a USA v Sweden final where Sweden has the luxury of playing a young Forsberg but USA can't play a young Eichel. How is this in any way fair?

Actually Sweden will, since we only lose our token SHL (now KHL) player from the Olympics. I feel insulted though by the fact that all our team's competitors have some handicap working against them and we don't.
