If it stays,I cant believe they had chance to put up great tournament and it would've been step forward for hockey world. It could've became every 4 years respected tradition.. but they chose not to take it seriously.
I don't know whether it's funny or sad that some people actually insist that the level of play will be higher than, say, during a run-of-the-mill NHL regular season game.
How can anyone take it seriously when there are two teams that practically scream "exhibition!" into your face?
How can anyone imagine members of Team Canada or Team USA proper can just put on their game faces and think "okay, let's do this" when pitted against Team Young Stars?
Or what about the players in those mickey mouse teams? Okay, maybe they won't boycott the event, but will they take it seriously either? The key word here is "fun". They'll all keep saying how it's going to be a "fun experiment" - two words that in itself imply that they'll go out on the ice, play a game, but at the end of it all it really doesn't make plenty difference who wins and who loses.
And yeah, how can the players in those proper national teams take it seriously when their coaches and other team staff find it difficult to put on a straight face?
Sure, there is something to be gained here. The players can have fun. Maybe play for bragging rights. For the coaches it's a rare opportunity to experiment with the best players available to them. But in the end of it all, there's really no greater prestige to be had here. It's a two-week long all-star event. Even a player taking part in an European mid-season event, EHT or similar, has more to gain because by doing well there, they might improve their chances of breaking the WHC roster at the end of the season.
Heck, there's even more on the line with those two points rewarded at the end of that NHL regular season game.
Some might say, "okay, they may not take the gimmick teams seriously, but they will give it more when faced with those proper NTs". Riiiight. When the tone of the tournament has already been set? They'll just flick that little switch on their heads and go like, "heh, heh... okay, that was a good one"? "Now, back to business."
...and yet, there are some people thick enough to think this will be premier hockey. Cry, laugh, whatever... just don't take them, and this event, too seriously. There's enough writing on the wall to imply that the actual participants won't do so either.
