Terrible world cup ideas

Not only that, but how motivated will fans be to cheer on their countries?

It is sure that it affects the sale price of TV-rights. Not much intrest will be drawn in European hockey states or always important Germany. People aren't motivated to stay up whole night if games are meaningless "national team games" instead of real best on best NT hockey.

European NHL tv packages are expensive. Why? Because NHL is real deal. This tournament is far from it, and you can count not cashing much with it even in hockey populations.

If it stays,I cant believe they had chance to put up great tournament and it would've been step forward for hockey world. It could've became every 4 years respected tradition.. but they chose not to take it seriously.
I don't know whether it's funny or sad that some people actually insist that the level of play will be higher than, say, during a run-of-the-mill NHL regular season game.

How can anyone take it seriously when there are two teams that practically scream "exhibition!" into your face?

How can anyone imagine members of Team Canada or Team USA proper can just put on their game faces and think "okay, let's do this" when pitted against Team Young Stars?

Or what about the players in those mickey mouse teams? Okay, maybe they won't boycott the event, but will they take it seriously either? The key word here is "fun". They'll all keep saying how it's going to be a "fun experiment" - two words that in itself imply that they'll go out on the ice, play a game, but at the end of it all it really doesn't make plenty difference who wins and who loses.

And yeah, how can the players in those proper national teams take it seriously when their coaches and other team staff find it difficult to put on a straight face?

Sure, there is something to be gained here. The players can have fun. Maybe play for bragging rights. For the coaches it's a rare opportunity to experiment with the best players available to them. But in the end of it all, there's really no greater prestige to be had here. It's a two-week long all-star event. Even a player taking part in an European mid-season event, EHT or similar, has more to gain because by doing well there, they might improve their chances of breaking the WHC roster at the end of the season.

Heck, there's even more on the line with those two points rewarded at the end of that NHL regular season game.

Some might say, "okay, they may not take the gimmick teams seriously, but they will give it more when faced with those proper NTs". Riiiight. When the tone of the tournament has already been set? They'll just flick that little switch on their heads and go like, "heh, heh... okay, that was a good one"? "Now, back to business."

...and yet, there are some people thick enough to think this will be premier hockey. Cry, laugh, whatever... just don't take them, and this event, too seriously. There's enough writing on the wall to imply that the actual participants won't do so either.

The more I think about this tournament the more I hate it.

It's one big gimmick. I sat in on some inter-country dialogues during my time in Italy this past fall...

Would love to hear from people from these countries talk about it on this forum, but from what I remember, the panel discussed how countries like Czech/Slovakia/Poland/Austria (majority of the central/eastern European countries) do not have any type of cultural relationships or too many diplomatic relationships amongst each other.

I have serious doubts as to why players would want to buy into plying for "Europe" instead of their home country, which they 100% have pride for.

What a joke. Shame. Effin shame.

I'm not sure what you mean by diplomatic relationships but they are all part of the EU.

It doesn't really matter. Maybe in united states it is hard to understand, as it's union with much more cohesion, but EU is nothing like that. Most of the countries have completely different languages from each other, in other words people don't even understand each other when they talk. EU is just a way to be strong for all those little cultures. Together they are something.

While USA is really proud country, EU isn't even a country. Countries have their own seperate histories, cultures, languages.. You can't just say "well its EU, lol lets put it together". It's just worst idea ever. Also in EU, national pride is not a bad thing. People really like national team games, no matter the sport.

It seems KHL players might be able to participate
http://www.nhl.com/ice/m_news.htm?id=750156

"All North American players in the tournament are expected to either be NHL players or at the very least NHL-drafted prospects. There is no rule that restricts federations from sending players who are not NHL players."

Of course there is economical ties, like also globally there is. But some european nations have average salary of 700€, and some 4000€. While they are tied economies, they are completely seperate economies and there is huge variance compared to variance between states of USA.

Reread the quote which said they don't have "too many diplomatic relationships". The European Union is basically the strongest form of diplomatic relationship between nation states on earth.

Well, agreed. But to this tournament format issue, it doesn't really help.

Thank you. QFT I guess.

I don't think anybody is justifying the lame format based on diplomatic or cultural reasons.

It's all about throwing together an NHL only tournament with sight teams.

Exactly this! Yes, I can root for Hossa or Chara in EU squad but it won't be like I am really excited EU team beat Czech, for example. It is nothing like when is playing Slovakia againt any other country...It will be just like some exhibition squad

Not letting Slovaks in as a country is a slap in the face of a great hockey nation. The whole thing is a fraud.

It's not even an EU squad, cause Streit, Josi, Niederreiter, Grabovski and Zuccarello are not from the EU.

Europe the continent and EU the international organization are not the same thing :p

EU players are normally born in Europe

I'd be ok if the tournament would be four teams where there would be Canada, USA, Russia and Europe. I still would consider as some extension to All-Stars event, but still.

That's exactly what I was saying. As far as I know, "EU" is an abbreviation for the European Union, not for Europe. Norway, Switzerland and Belarus are not members of the EU.

I'd say that there, as in Europe, is a huge variance within the United States as well: Map - GDP per capita

Not really. The GDP per capita of the US states range between 28 944 (Mississippi) - 61 183 USD (Delaware). In Europe the range is 4 670 (Moldova) - 132 177 USD (Monaco). If you exclude Monaco, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein the highest GDP per capita is still 65 460 USD (Norway).

The differences in wealth are way more drastic in Europe due to historical factors.

Most European countries also have their own separate language, and I believe the culture differences also are a bit bigger that those between US states.

The US states also have the federal government and president, the flag, the anthem, the military, etc. in common. Switzerland and Slovakia has nothing of that in common.

This tournament is a complete farce. Why ruin possibly great international tournament with some ridiculous all star teams? International tournaments are international tournaments and all stars games are all stars games. Others are events where players battle for their home country with dignity and pride, others are just for fun -events. Why mix them? This is terribly wrong, apparently the deciders care just for money.

I still can't believe those ideas were not only real, but were approved and now are official.

shocking I know...I'm still trying to come to grips with the lunacy of the NHL office...

but here's something even more shocking...

A poll on a Russian hockey website posed the question:

Which 2016 tournament do you consider to be more important?

1. The World Hockey Championships (to be held in Moscow)

2. The World Cup in Canada

3. Other

the results, out of 2200 votes, The World Cup is winning with 51.52% 39.67% for the WHC in Moscow and 8.82% other.

Shocking. I don't know what to make of that poll.

Car crashes are way more interesting than traffic running smoothly.

It's not every day that you're presented with a tournament where the main question is "will 1/4 of the teams even be interested in playing?"
