Terrible hockey

No more than usual. But their Save % is higher than some previous generations
League wide SV% is pretty ass right now. Was .900 SV% this year. Have to go all the way back to '95-96 season when it was .898 SV%

'05-06 was at .901 SV% but that was an outlier due to the goalie equipment changes

Early 90s and earlier were ugly lmao to each their own tho

Defence wins championships. This ain't a skills competition.

And goalie equipment already got slashed multiple times. How many goals per game do you want man? There's already enough sieves as is
Goalie equipment DID NOT GET SLASHED. They chest protector was inflated to triple the size of the skinny ass goalies. All of their equipment is BIGGER... ALL

Wow this years playoffs full of interference not allowing the fast teams to flex their strength. Missed holding the stick penalties complete boring hockey the worst I have ever watched. Hope the NHL fixes this mind you today’s hockey is nothing compared to what it was
Every year*

Cross checking is not a penalty anymore, Teams have mastered interference, officials are very inconsistent due to game management.

I won't complain about it because it is what it is, but i would like to see the game officiated slightly differently

I think everyone here loves the sport. Some have issues with the league though.

Just for fun in response to this post, I'll go through some sports I watch or have watched, and opine on them according to the sport itself, any top-level leagues I've watched, and its international competitions (if I've watched them). I will refrain from commenting on the officiating. Some of my opinions will be based on incomplete information and therefore be vague.

Hockey - my favorite sport, by far. The NHL is... enigmatic. If I want to analyze it objectively, the business side is set up extremely well in my opinion, but I can see having issues with the regular season structure and the playoff format. I'll call them just kind of mediocre. The sport itself being so great makes up for it. Olympic hockey with NHL players attending is amazing (but 2018 and 2022 without them were enjoyable enough). So was the 4 Nations. I enjoy the world championships as well, especially since I just saw my country win gold at it for the first time in my life, but calling it a "B-level" tournament (or whatever) is reasonable. The two World Cups I've seen were fun enough, but the 2016 edition was slightly farcical with the two gimmick teams.

Basketball - it's actually okay as a sport, but not exactly my favorite. If the NBA were set up better, I might even like it. However, the NBA is a joke of a league. International competition can be fun sometimes, but the USA being so dominant in it (even though it's my own country) makes it kind of stale. That's not the fault of the sport though.

Football (the American variety) - fun sport to watch, probably my second favorite after hockey. I also think the NFL is pretty good from the business side of things from what I know of it (which is not nearly as much as I know about the NHL). International competition? Hah. There was some international tournament I vaguely watched a bit of once where they attempted to level the playing field by not allowing the US team any professionals though. That was okay, I guess.

Baseball - meh. Decent enough if the stakes of the game are high enough, which is not achieved most of the time with the MLB's 162-game season. I've followed it on and off (currently in an off cycle) throughout the years. The way the major leagues are set up is kind of dumb too with their lack of anything other than a luxury tax system or whatever. I'll tune in for the postseason though. Internationally, the World Baseball Classic is really fun.

Motorsport (in general) - really fun in principle. Formula One is just okay. I don't really watch it anymore since moving to the east coast; races are on at really inconvenient times, especially a lot of them being at 8:00 a.m. on Sundays when I have to leave for church at 9. The annual 24 Hours of Le Mans is easily in my top five sporting events of the year though. I skip church that weekend (lol) and try to watch as many of the 24 hours as possible. Don't really care for oval track racing so that rules out most NASCAR and IndyCar races for me.

Rugby (union) - really awesome sport that I should watch more of. Used to follow it a lot more, mostly teams from the southern hemisphere. Super Rugby got kind of stale with expanding too much and is now a shell of its former self. The Six Nations is fun and so is the Rugby Championship (especially now that they let in Argentina and renamed it from the Tri Nations). I also always make sure to tune in for the Rugby World Cup. On a side note, I think rugby league is dumb, and that's all I'll say about it instead of giving it its own little section in this post.

Cricket - decent fun. The ODI and T20 World Cups are a must watch for me. Hard to follow with it usually being on at inconvenient times so I don't follow it as much as I used to.

Soccer - don't really care for it but watch occasionally, usually when a US national team (men's or women's, either one) is involved. FIFA is just terrible about things in general, and I dislike the big European leagues for how predictable they are. Major international tournaments can be fun here and there.

I could probably get way too carried away with this if I wanted to, but I don't. I will however give honorable mentions to tennis and Australian football overall without going into detail. I will also give honorable mentions to absolutely loving every single event at the winter Olympics except for the figure skating (even though I make no effort to understand what's going on in the world of those sports outside of watching them at the winter games). Figure skating gets a dishonorable mention. Actually, giving it a dishonorable mention is too kind to it. I hate it. Ice vandalism is what it should be called. Although speaking of the Olympics, I don't really care for the summer games.

It should also go without saying that if I didn't mention a sport, league, or international tournament, then I either have no opinion of it whatsoever and/or didn't care enough about it to write anything about it.

I'll take the opportunity to use this if my team lose the final as a strong statement about how f*** up the situation is and need to be addressed immediately

However if my team win...

I thought this was going to be a Hurricanes thread

The 1st round was fantastic.

The 2nd round was fine.

The 3rd round has been bad. Checking is way too tight, too much interference on zone entries is creeping it's way back into the game, and there just doesn't seem to be any time or space for any kind of fun hockey.

This doesn't feel different to me at all.

By the time you hit the semis and finals, teams are running on fumes.

You get the odd gem of a series and much of it is a slog. It's the drama more so than the beautiful play.
