Tennis: TENNIS: 2025 Edition -- Game, Set, Match

Friend of mine was going to catch some matches in Miami but now has cancelled because of the craziness going on south of the border. We live in some strange times.

Fernandez with a straight set win over the wildly inconsistent Parks. Maybe Leylah can put a few of these together as the court seems to suit her.

18 year old Victoria Mboko got a WC into Miami and made the most of it today! She won her opening match in 3 sets. Quite a debut to a WTA1000.
She went 3 today and lost to Badosa. She was down 5-2, I believe, in the third but came back.

I saw a bit of Djokovic and he won the first set 6-0 against someone who looked like an above average club player. Djokovic won the second set in a breaker. He looks like Rafa did in his last year.

Carlos loses his first match in Miami to Goffin in three sets. He had to come from a break down to take the first set and then it was downhill from there, getting broken in the ninth game of the second set and twice in the deciding set. 28 unforced errors on his forehand and a serve that has speed but not accuracy didn't help.

Have been MIA in this thread since AO but what an awful stretch from Carlos on the hard courts with Sinner out. Have to think Sasha wins Miami with the heavy hitters out, has fared well in Miami and he's due for a good result

Felix once again won the first set before losing in three sets, this time to Musetti. Since late January of last year, he has lost nine such matches where he won the first set only to lose the last two. He also blew a two set to love lead to Kokkinakis at Wimbledon. It is a very troubling pattern. I don't think there is another player in the top fifty close to matching it.

A lot of top players went to Miami to party I guess, lol. A ton of upsets this week and even today with Maddie Keys.

I think Keys is still suffering from shell-shock after her horrendous loss to Sabalenka. That's kind of loss that could be traumatizing after such a hot streak that she was on.

Alexandra Aela, the 19-year-old from the Philippines, had an amazing week. She lost in the semis to Pegula in three hard-fought sets, but she managed to move from a ranking of #140 to #75, annihilating her previous highest ranking benchmark of #134. She has a very whippy forehand and caused her opponents fits all week.

Miami semis:

Nole with a ridiculously easy 6-2, 6-3 win of Dimitrov who is now 1-13 versus Djokovic. Nole had only four unforced groundstroke errors for the whole match, none of them on his forehand.

Mensik bookends tie breakers to win a very tough three setter against Fritz. As has been true all week, his serve delivered big time whenever he really needed it.

Tremendous Masters 1000 title for Mensik. Very underrated player in the next generation of players, he'll be a tough out for years to come. Gotta wonder where Novak gets his 100th title or his next GS win if he can't win with this draw. On a side note, Sinner is probably gonna run through the US Open once again this year if he's on par from his suspension

Great win for Mensik. He served very well all week and that continued today. Nole put constant pressure on him, but he duffed very few shots into the net, more than holding his own in the ground game. Mensik is on his way to the Top Ten. Huge step forward today.
