They should've won in 2019. Its partly Sweeney's fault because his team go dummied by a much tougher team. Oh and same thing happened the last two years. Hmmm I see some commonality there.

Yeah, the whole thing was heartbreaking and the Bruins should have taken that series and had the better team. And yeah, Binnington was top notch in that series. Still should have been a Cup.

No one was calling that roster insanely talented at that point.

Even considering the future sure thing Hall of Famers, they were not your standard HOF talent level players. Bergeron was one of the greatest defensive forwards ever. Never close to a top offensive player. Chara an anomaly because he was a 6'9", 260-pound player who worked his ass off to be the player he eventually became. Size, strength, smarts, work ethic, not so much talent.

2019 was a tragedy. No excuses for that one, it was sitting on a platter and they lost to a lesser team. Partially on refs, but mainly on the players for failing at key moments.

2023 was just disaster and I hold Monty mostly responsible.

Sweeney blew it in 2015. But the problem with hypotheticals is there are a lot of moving parts. They objectively should've drafted Barzal, but if they do and he becomes a top six center, do they trade or let Krejci walk sometime around 2017 or 2018? Do they still trade for Coyle or Mojo in 2019? Etc., etc. Too much butterfly effect.

It sucked then, but surprisingly Sweeney was still able to get us close to another cup and put together a record setting team.

The one that gets lost in all the lamenting and what-ifs is the 2020 team that was pacing toward the president's trophy but got derailed by COVID. I hated their deadline bringing in Ritchie, while Tampa loaded up on tough guys, but it would've been a much closer series if they were able to finish the season normally. If they had home ice instead of a bubble, if Pasta doesn't get hurt against Carolina (and they shouldn't have had to play Carolina without he dumb reseeding round robin), if Tuukka is there, it's way more competitive than the crappy washout they had there. And if they get through Tampa, they win that cup too.

And if not for Nazem Kadri and his ten cent brain they lose in round 1 to the Leafs in '19.

Even comments like this make me roll my eyes. When they lose it's because he did a shitty job, but when they have a semi-successful run it's all about how lucky they got. How can someone only get credit when the results are negative, it's so illogical.

What is a Sweeney fan? We are all Bruins fans here, I doubt anyone loses a lick of sleep if he's fired tomorrow, the most stout supporters included.

Team choked away a Cup in 2019. That ain’t on Sweeney. He also pushed all his chips into the pot for a 2023 Cup run and the team shit the bed…..again. That ain’t on Sweeney either. That’s 100% on the players, but as fans, it’s easier to blame some suit up in the press box, rather than put the accountability where it belongs.

That said, he took a bad situation and made it worse with the idiotic contracts he handed out over this past summer.

The one thing I hold against Sweeney for 2019 is not giving Krejci a proper RW. He deserved it, the team needed it, they could have had it, they didn't get it.

Once Tampa was out of the way, that roster was still good enough to win it all, and they should have. We know how close they came. But the top 6 was a piece short when it needn't have been, and that hurt. Ultimately I do hold the players primarily responsible, but I think the GM also has to bear a little blame on that account.
