Hart competition (For both players)
=
1996-97: Hasek, Kariya, Lemieux, Brodeur, Selanne, Leclair
1997-98: Hasek, Jagr, Selanne, Brodeur, Gretzky, Bondra
1998-99: Jagr, Yashin, Hasek, Joseph, Selanne, Lindros

During their time together, Selanne outproduced Kariya in 1996-97 (109 to 99) and in 1998-99 also outpaced him (107 and 1.43 to 101 and 1.23)

Kariya marginally outpaced Selanne in 1996 by a 0.03 difference playing less games and outproduced / outpaced Selanne in 1990-00 (86 and 1.16 to 86 and 1.08) in addition to the season Selanne was traded from winnipeg. Kariya was injured for the majority of 1997-98 only playing 22 games with a 1.42 PPG while Selanne had his weakest point finish as a duck from 1995-00 with 86 points but 3rd in PPG (1.18)

A few other things to consider.
Selanne joined the ducks late into the season in 1995-96 with a noticeable drop in PPG despite the smaller sample size after producing 72 points in 51 games with Winnipeg (1.41 to 1.29) presumably needing time to acclimate in his new environment. Comparatively, Kariya was already in his second season with the ducks at the time with 108 points (Though Selanne did outpace him in the season if you include his time in winnipeg). However, it is worth mentioning that Kariya was coming off his rookie season while Selanne had already established himself as an elite offensive player. A 4 year age gap between the two players.

When Kariya made the hall of fame he said he wouldn't have made the hall of fame if he didn't play with Selanne! Kariya knew his place and was man enough to admit it himself. As unlikeable as Kariya was you have to give him credit for saying that Selanne was the better player.

Kariya was better and still trending upwards when injuries started pulling him back down.

Saying that he couldn't have made it without Teemu is not a statement about who was the better player.

Outside of a few Ducks fans who remain bitter about how he left for Colorado, where are you getting this notion that Kariya was unlikable?

I'll go with Selänne, albeit narrowly. Led the league in goals while Kariya was injured, despite missing a bunch of games himself.

I picked Kariya, but I'm second guessing myself.

I can't discount the ridiculous numbers Selanee put up as a rookie, and then the even more ridiculous numbers he put up as a geriatric.

I'm starting to think their overlap in Anaheim was very close (I gave a sleight nod to Kariya) but the rest is clearly Selanne (and yes I know injuries played a huge part in Kariya's latter half).

I'm changing my answer to Selanne.

At the time, in the day to day, it was clearly Kariya. With hindsight on how it unfolded in reality and the dust settling from that into a complete, finished product, it’s Selanne.

When we were wearing our Mighty Ducks Starter gear, if we weren’t pretending to be Adam Banks, we were Paul Kariya.

I think Kariya was better from when they first got together until 97-98 when Suter took him out, though Selanne was a MVP candidate in his stead. Then Selanne was better in 98-99. Then Selanne started to decline with his knee and Kariya was better again in 99-00
