He makes no sense. There's a reason that Karlsson hasn't made the playoffs a single time since that contract began. Successful teams don't pay roving, gunner style, pseudo-defensemen as top players. And they don't deploy those types on the top pair either.

Montour has far higher defensive upside than Karlsson, is a shooting threat from the top of the umbrella, and we let him walk.

We won't acquire Karlsson because he will never be more than a 4D for us. Even if we had the assets to get him retained down to $5m (the lowest possible amount given prior retention), that would preclude us from signing Ekblad or replacing him on the top pair this summer. And we're simply too well run for the organization to count on Karlsson as our best RD.

I'm not going to speculate what goes on in Dubas' head, I'd probably have to suffer a brain injury to get that level of dumb.

You don't bring in a $10m d-man (who cant actually play defence) to be your #3, especially not if you want to win a cup. I'd also stay away from him even at 50% retained, but i understand others who may say he has some value there. But regardless of one's thoughts on Karlsson, Florida doesn't have expendable assets to make it worthwhile for Pittsburgh to keep $5m in dead money for multiple years so that's irrelevant.


I still wouldn't sign Karlsson to that but it's not a bad idea. I don't know that a team would even need to "give" Pittsburgh anything. Just being rid of Karlsson and his contract with no retention should be enough of an incentive

Forgive the off topic response but I would say that the Pens org brought in EK65 because of his novelty and how it would help them sell tickets and ensure a modicum boost in interest among the fanbase. Even after his most recent Norris trophy winning season he was never going to be some game changing addition that was going to thrust Pittsburgh back into contender status. I really think Doobie was more about sideshow intrigue with this one.

If Karlsson is getting a 1st it's probably with 50% retention. Not sure why the Pens would not retain the extra 2M if they are retooling/rebuilding. Would be a waste to not do so if it means expanding his market and getting a better return.

We're likely to lose Bennett this summer, our Top 9 can't lose Rodrigues too.

If we acquire Karlsson, it'll be for all futures. And any retention <$4m is a non-starter. I.e., the only way we acquire Karlsson is if Zito bends Dubas over. And even then, it'd be contingent on Zito's ability to get Ekblad signed to an insulting contract.

Like most trades for playoff rentals, unless you win the cup or at least go far in the playoffs because of the acquisition, it's a long-term loser.

There's no question trading Tippett + 1st for Giroux to get swept by Tampa in round 2 was not a good trade in hindsight.

I'll push back: Zito gave that core the best chance to get the cup and it didn't work. This gave him the certainty to do the Huberdeau Tkachuk swap..

We're not giving up/downgrading any of our lineup regulars, and the only future assets we possess with any value are Gracyn Sawchyn, the 2026 1st Rounder, the 2026 2nd Rounder, and the 2027 1st Rounder. We're not giving up three of those to get a 4D.

2) Bennett will not sign for <$7m. Ekblad probably won't sign for <$6m. Even in that best case scenario (which we can't take for granted before July 1), we'd have $5m left to re-sign Samoskevich, Jeseper Boqvist, and at least two fourth line/bottom pair guys. That math doesn't work.

The offense went dry for a month but in general it hasn't been an issue. The team is 3rd in GF in the league but middle of the pack in GA. While I wouldn't be totally against Karlsson at 50%, I still wouldn't give anything of value for him due to the length of that deal and because stylistically it isn't a great fit. Being great on the PP isn't enough.

I 100% agree Dubas would be that stupid, but on a team with Crosby/Malkin/Letang they shouldn't have any problem moving tickets. And if they are, adding him as a 4th best player wouldn't move the needle

I mean, i guess some teams might be wary of what Florida is going to do if they're looking for a RHD...because how many playoff teams aren't looking for a solid Top-4 RHD? And how many of them are actually out there on the market available? The math doesn't math on that. Supply <<< Demand.


The other element of this i suppose, is potentially that Florida might be looking at a bigger deal for a more "longer-term" solution. If they've decided that they're going to prioritize retaining 19 year old Sam Bennett over Ekblad, and will need someone who can step into those boots down the line a ways. But i don't know that anyone should be all that scared of a bidding war with Florida - they've got jack squat left for real liquid "assets" to move, without sacrificing from their actual current roster.

Your argument is premised on the false assumption that Karlsson will be a worthwhile investment. He won't be.

The Cats will be willing to pay the price for a middle pair guy with a year or two left on his contract. They won't be willing to pay for a middle pair guy who also needs multiple years of $4m+ retention.

I agree that Bennett is likely to walk. If that happens, the we need money and/or assets to acquire a top 6 winger.
