NFL: Teams to push for the NFL to allow trades of draft picks from 5 years out

I think that’s a bad idea. I can’t even recall picks move that far in advanced.

I mean 3 drafts from now seems like plenty unless teams are wanting to spread out the picks. But receiving team GM may not be around in 5 years to use them all up.

Seeing some nba teams recently trading 2032 picks is absolutely hilarious, I dont think we’ll see that many trade of picks that far out anyway though even if they legalize it though.

Of course the GM's love this, if it goes wrong it is going to be someone else's problem to clean up. Pass the buck, and by buck I mean bag of dog shit.
NFL is basically a year to year league. Rams handed Det like the 6th pick in 23 draft IIRC. You are really a QB or position group rash injury away from a bad season.

Awful idea.

Yep.

The Kansas City Flyovers are finishing bottom 5 for the 5th year in a row, and are handing yet another future franchise corner stone over to the dynasty Minnesota Vikings? People in Kansas City curse my name because of my 5 FRP trade for generational kicker Will Reichard?

What do I care? I'm spending my generational wealth from my fully guaranteed GM contract on a beach sipping Bahama Mamas.

It makes more sense in the NBA.

With the amount of parity and uncertainty in the NFL from year to year, something like this would end up a disaster.

hate it

the fact that nba teams routinely trade picks for 5+ years down the road is so dumb
NBA has a rule where you can't trade firsts in back to back years because the late 70s/early 80s Cleveland Cavs traded their pick like 7 years in a row and the league had to step in. So to compensate in bigger trades they have to stagger out picks every other year.

Half the time tho teams get around this by just drafting a player for the team they're trading with. I.e. Atlanta drafting Doncic for Dallas.

When Davis was traded from NO to LA Lakers gave up a shit load of future first rounders to New Orleans in a weird ass move

Trading future picks that far ahead is weird

In the NFL too, so many things change year to year that I don't even think most teams would want to trade draft picks 4 or 5 years into the future.

Look at the Colts in 2018. Luck comes back healthy, they have a good season at 10-6, win a playoff game and then he abruptly retires a month before the season starts. Imagine if they had gone "all-in" in a way and traded a bunch of future picks for roster support assuming he'd be around for another five years at least.

Personally I'd be OK with KC handing the Vikings 5 1st round picks but that's just me

Have to also consider the acquiring team. How many GM/HC will be around in 5 years? Not going to wait around that long for a draft pick.
