Teams playing to protect the lead are getting killed

Yet again, Kings play great and active to get ahead -> start sitting back and "protecting the lead" -> lose the lead and lose the game.

When your strategy is to park the bus in the 3rd period you simply cannot be rocking 3 lines and 5 d-man. You just gas your team. LA in OT was still rocking only 3 lines and they were getting their teeth kicked in the entire time, every clearing attempt was Charmin Ultra Soft.

It depends on the game.

I was surprised Edmonton came back, not because they were behind, but because the Kings completely controlled play. It does indicate some change in the third period whether that was LA playing more conservative or Edmonton just playing better.

A lot of times, though, the team that's winning was never doing anything to being with and the RNG catches up with them.

I don't know how much of it with LA is a system thing or the fact that they're functionally opting to play every game with 9 forwards and 4 defensemen. Not surprising if the tank is empty by the 3rd period whether you're winning or losing.

I think 9-4 is catching up to them. I mean, like last night....you don't go from out-shooting your opponent 2-1 after 2 to being out-shot by nearly 20% and losing in OT merely because you were trying to protect a lead.

Either they were gassed or the Oilers suddenly were inspired to show up....or a combination of both.

Either way, I'll take it ;)

The biggest issue is that bottom pairing.

They needed another D Man on this roster they could trust to play some more minutes.

Running 3 forward lines isn't a problem.
But not having another D pair is a major issue.

Go tell Tortorella, he will tell you you know absolutely nothing about hockey!

You also can play like having a lead from minute 1 and try to protect this imagined lead. That's next level IQ by Torts all this teams in the playoff still need to learn.☝️

Back to the topic: these teams are all quality teams. If they fight back hard while the other team just slightly leans back a little too much this kind of stuff happens quickly.
What? Torts coined the term safe is death. That is not Torts at all.

Most bottom pairings are going to get eaten up by McDrai on the road. It is what it is. You run the risk, especially up 2-0. Coaching scared and running your top 9/4 into the ground is guaranteed to cost you. Hiller is coaching scared.

The bottom pairing was a known issue even during the regular season. A 2nd or 3rd mean maybe you can get a guy to eat a few extra minutes.

Kings bottom pairing was not a glaring issue. Ice time distribution was the best it’s been in years and they played a huge chunk of the season without Doughty. You’re telling me McDrai line matching any fourth line/bottom pairing D at home wouldn’t be an issue for most playoff teams? It’s an advantage the Oilers have. You can’t completely mitigate this, especially on the road, but running your guys into the ground is not a viable solution.
