Some of those U20 Americans pissed that tournament got cancelled. Lots of motivation as the youngest team to try for some hardware and prove the doubters wrong. As usual in single-elinination hockey tourney though, they will need a hot goaltender to win the next few games. Any idea who they'll settle on in nets to make their run? Thought all their goalies looked strong. Probably not Strauuss, just because of his lack of size??
Commesso should get the start.

Based only on the 3 preliminary games I disagree with the sentiment that there's an obvious choice to start in net going forward. Yes, that first goal Mann gave up was brutal but based on the way he responded and the season he's having in Sweden, I think it's safe to treat that goal as an outlier. He played by far the most difficult of the three games and answered the bell. Both goalies looked good enough that Quinn and anyone else who has input on the decision will probably start whichever goalie they had more confidence in going into the tournament.

Even the 2nd Canada goal he made himself small
on the shot. It wasn't an atrocious goal like the first but he looked off on it.

Agreed. With his size, he needs to be perfect with his positioning and technique and there were multiple times that felt shaky to me. My gut would be to stick with Commesso, but would understand either.

I wouldn't call 5/15 "most of them"

If he had said made NHL debut within next 12 months it wouldn't have been so bad.

Commesso-Sanderson-Faber-Knies-Beniers-Meyers-Brisson-McLaughlin-Hentges-Smith have a shot at it
especially if some of them sign with teams who have no shot at playoffs and get a cup of coffee.

I'm very curious how have I "bashed" USA Hockey unless stating that this US team winning one game in the group stage is a realistic prediction counts as such.

You made it sound like it would be a massive upset if they beat Germany or Canada.

This is what I said:
Germany is essentially the favorite against the US, as is Canada. There's nothing "totally dumb" about the statement. Of course, no one knows who would the US face in the qualification playoffs.
Now where exactly does it imply that I would consider it a massive upset if they beat Germany or Canada? Stop putting words in my mouth.

Yes, but he did. And therein lies the problem.

In general, the NCAA crowd twisted this argument into some kind of Europe vs. USA mishmash when the actual point was "is this the best team possible?". Nobody argued that Sanderson or Beniers doesn't belong on this team just like nobody argues against kids (2 of them playing in NCAA as well) on team Canada.

When you said Germany would be the favorite. No
they wouldn't be.
I think what happened is team USA went from being slightly underrated to being slightly overrated in the span of a couple of days. Both when it comes to odds and public perception.

I haven't paid much attention to these games. Do we have a legit shot at a medal?

Well, they have a bye into the quarter-finals which will help out a little. Depends on how the bracket comes down. For whatever reason, playing teams like Finland or Sweden always put a bit of anxiety while watching. Largely because they do so damn well regardless in these international tourney's.

Realistically though, I think they have a solid chance to get hardware. Whether that is G/S/B is really the up-in-the-air thing for me personally. They've looked pretty solid so far.

As a Finn I think this team will be the scariest because of the way USA plays. Jalonen knows how Russia will play the game and we can adapt to that but USA has a style that could end up being more frustrating to defend against.

Don't forget about Abruzzese. He's been pretty good so far. I know sometimes it's tough to get kids out of Harvard early but he's turning 23 in June and I would expect the Leafs to push to sign him this year.

Yeah, the Harvard angle is why I didn't list he or Farrell.

After watching the Sweden-Finland game. I think Finland could win this tournament. Talk about giving a clinic in crashing the net.

Lesson to be learned. Don't sit on leads.

I definately hope the USA win gold if my team (Sweden) don’t. By far the most entertaining team. I feel like USA hockey picked the right type of team for this tournament, prioritizing skill, flair, creativity and youthful enthusiasm. Hockey should be fun, and the US team provide more of that than the others in this tournament. I think you have genuine gold chances even though I guess Russia have by far the best roster.

Bringing majority quality NCAA guys and sprinkling in Kampfer, Agostino and Miele has been a good model.

If this had been the field in 1988 the US
would have been legitimate Gold Medal favorites
since USSR and Czechoslovakia would have been
significantly depleted by the NHL. As it was the
1988 USA College All-Stars (more of them than 2022)
gave great Czechoslovakia and USSR teams all they could handle playing a run and gun game. They scored 5 against Czechoslovakia and 5 against USSR.

1988

G Richter

D Leech Norton Brown Weinrich Young

C Janney Jones Snuggerud

W Stevens Leach McDonald Miller
Bourbeau Okerlund Donatelli

That team was missing some great players had they opted to go the NCAA route and complete eligibility
such as Barrasso, Iafrate, Hatcher, Wolanin, Lafontaine, Jensen, Olczyk, Presley, Noonan and Turcotte.

That group would be favorite against any team in this tourney.
